Why though?

I haven't been this excited for a game since Bloodborne. I won't be playing it on launch though

Miyazaki and FROM make masterpieces. This seems like it will replace Bloodborne as my GOAT

It's got a 97 Rating on MetaCritic with 45 reviews. That's absurd

Bloodborne was different. The Victorian vibes, along with the hunter premise set it apart from the rest. Sekiro is another one that easily stands on it's own.

After the Souls games and all their DLC, I got a little "overkill vibe," and what kind of put me off was that this one would be more accessible to people, and I was skeptical of the open world aspect.

Then the reviews hit.

Elden Ring is GOOD. Spent hours on it already and haven't even fought the first boss. Just been going around exploring and making my guy super OP.

I love open worlds but I don’t know if I’d like Dark Souls. It’s getting great ratings though. The whole atmosphere seems too disturbing/creepy to me though.

I did love the Witcher 3, but this gives me vibes of like, the Hearts of Stone expansion mission where he goes to the haunted house, but like the whole game.

The atmosphere isn't like Bloodborne which is more of a horror themed, it's not much different from the Witcher. Medieval Fantasy backdrop.

But this game doesn't play like Witcher at all as far as the combat goes. Completely different. I would give it a try, this one is a lot more accessible than some of the other soulslikes. I didn't think I'd be into these types of games, but once I learned how they are supposed to be played I fell in love. Only one I couldn't get was Sekiro which was disappointing.

I think it will be a good mix of high fantasy and creepy, and the reviews are too good to pass up. I wanted to get it immediately but money is tight so I’m waiting. Definitely think it will be too hard for me, but it sounds so good that I think I can push through lol

These games are all about persevering and pushing through. They make you wanna put the time in to be good. It's the best part of these types of games.

Newbie here…after playing Friday and Saturday night I wanted to return the game. Then I watched way too many YouTube videos to see what I was doing wrong now I can’t wait to play again even though I still suck.

That's the way to do it. Watch how the experts play and learn their tendencies.

These games are all about patience and recognizing the enemy patterns. Then when you do that and beat a boss, the feeling of accomplishment is unlike any other in gaming.

Also, take some time to grind and level up. That's mostly what I've been doing with the game so far and it will make it easier for you.

This is my plan. I used to play a lot more games and probably would have more easily been up to the soulslike challenge. Now not so much, but I remember grinding to level up for certain encounters I couldn’t pass in other games and I figure my best bet in the beginning is to take it slow, grind, get as many upgrades as possible and try to give myself a bit of a running start.

There are a lot of youtube videos on great Rune farming sites, definitely check them out. Grinding and leveling up and becoming OP is absolutely part of the fun of these games.

before beating the first story boss I wandered around for like, 17 hours around the world map finding weapons and killing minibosses, felt kind of aimless, but then I beat the first main boss and now it feels like i'm playing a Dark Souls again, in a very large dungeon which feels like a classic Souls level. As someone who was NOT a fan of Zelda BOTW, this is how i prefer it.

On a side note, i'm super pissed at my friend who got the game for PC instead of PS5 bc he's a PC nerd, now we can't co-op which was one of the main reasons I wanted this game.

So anyone who's playing on PS5, dm me your PSN tag and maybe we can cross paths

From Software sure knows how to make a Castle. I thought Boletaria was cool but Stormveil Castle is on another level.

Almost 20 hours played and i'm just scratching the surface. Being able to choose which stat a weapon scales to with Ashes of War is such a game changer. I feel like I always default to Vit/Str in Souls games, but this system makes it so much easier to try new builds.

I don’t game anymore but Elden Ring looks awesome. I watched some YouTubers play it, the leveling system, amazing world to explore, deep lore, simple but enjoyable battle system, cool bosses that are extremely challenging but beatable, ability to become OP through hard word while still exploring new areas with new loot really make it a next level game.

….that being said, I’ve always had a hang up getting into games with a ‘silent’ protagonist. It never felt legit, like I was fully immersed in the game and world. It still bothers me- it makes character development from a plot point negligible and that really takes over half the experience away from me, not sure anyone else ever feels that way. I love watching the protag go through hardships, betrayal, and all the emotions and grow from it and no dialogue from them really removes that emotional connection. I love the protag’s mindset change, make different choices based on their past experience in the game like the most recent and amazing God Of War which I think I would enjoy much more than Elden Ring even though ER has so much more going for it.

Similarly, unless it does it REALLY well (it usually doesnt) games where the player gets to decide the plot based on choices also seem to have less character development. The focus on those games is ‘wow I get to change the outcome so cool’ and the replay factor, and not on the protagonist developing in the game. Just a hang up I’ve had, the success of both these types of games tell me I’m on an island on this one :)

I agree mostly. The silent protagonist doesn’t bother me as much, but I do enjoy games that are more character driven. I always enjoyed the Final Fantasy games for that reason. Uncharted, the last God of War, etc. I agree about the multiple choice type games to some extent - most of them end up underwhelming, but of course there’s games like the Witcher that execute super well that are the exception. Elden Ring looks like one I simply have to play, even though the only game I currently even own is NHL.

I have my PS5 still in it's box. I don't even know why I bought it.

PC MASTER RACE

Still not entirely sure I'm having any fun with Elden Ring. Things feel difficult just for the sake of throwing EVERYTHING at you at once - invisible mobs that ambush you and do ridiculous damage, ultra fast rapid succession attacks, the insanely high range that seemingly every enemy has for every single attack they have. Trying to find a break in between boss/mini-boss attacks is nearly impossible because they just do 45 follow-up attacks to their initial attack. Still haven't beaten a single boss/mini-boss aside from the Tree Sentinel. Leveling up has done a whole lot of nothing. Not sure what I'm doing/not doing, but don't think I'm going to be doing it much longer at this rate.

Don’t give up skeleton. And upgrading your weapons is more important than raising your level although obviously more health and requisite stats to wield weapons is important too

Leveling up isn't going to help you if you are not taking your time trying to learn enemy patterns and being patient. These games are all about patience. Let them attack first. Learn what they do and then use that to your advantage. But at @KirkAlbuquerque said, upgrade your weapons. Go farm some smithing stones. You can raise your starting weapon to +4 pretty early on. There are some great Youtube videos on it.

Every time I die in this game, I find that more times than not it's me not being patient and not paying attention instead of something unfair the game did to me. You learn from those experiences and become stronger.

Oh, and one more thing - Don't get greedy!

Elden ring needs to learn how to port a game for PC. Holy shit is it frustrating to try and play with the old keyboard/mouse combo. I'm gonna end up buying a damn controller just so I can play it without wanting to claw my own eyes out.

These games were never meant to be played with a mouse/keyboard setup.
