As a Leaf fan, do you think Toronto can afford to have Bunting on the ice in the playoffs?

He does a lot of good things and instigates well, but also takes dumb penalties and has a poor reputation with officials.

A few weeks ago @Jamieh flat out told everyone he hasn't been a Leafs fan since he was a kid. Which either is or isn't true, who really knows or cares at this point. Anyway by now I've stopped taking anything he says even remotely seriously, should've done that a while ago.

I'm not a Leafs fan either but had the game on for a few periods, Tampa is a complete team and Leafs seem soft. As a neutral, imo half their problem is the playoff scheduling (almost any team having to play Tampa multiple years in a row would likely lose every series) and the other half is that none of their core players are all that physical, especially compared to a team like Tampa. I mean, Dubas has done what he could by trying to trade for that physicality but imo it's likely a structural issue if you need to rely on someone like Bunting to actually throw hits rather than just be an agitator.

And of course now you have to add something about previous history / gripping your stick too hard but that is a different conversation.

Really glad we have BA who is building our team with size / physicality (rather than Chayka / Dubas who overly focus on top end skill). At the very least we'll have guys like Jack McBain / Crouse (and hopefully Lamoreaux) ensuring we don't get pushed around in the playoffs

If you first assertion was ever written by me it was written by mistake. I tried to write that I have been a Leaf fan since I was a kid.

Nah man. I was wondering why a Leafs fan would spend his time trolling in another team's fan boards and you replied with

I suspect I have financially supported the Coyotes as much as most on this forum. The fact I spent my youth as a Leaf's fan seems to mean a lot more to the children here than it does to me.

Best case it's actively misleading just like your post above, after enough of your nonsense I'm no longer even remotely inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt.

But whatever -- at this point I've moved on and anyone else who actively follows probably should too. Just my own two cents

I don't see the part about me not being a Leaf fan since I was a kid. I think everyone here knows as I've written many times that the Leafs have been my team since childhood.

You can make the joke but the reality is he has underperformed in the playoffs and gets almost no flack for it.
Well maybe that's because he's one of the best players in the world and it's the organization's fault for not building a team that can win in the playoffs around him. That being said, he's a bum that doesn't deserve to play in Toronto and needs to be sent to hockey hell, aka Arizona.

He plays with one of the best playmakers in the game and they can't outplay their opposite line at any point in playoffs? No idea why you also think he should be above criticism? If Matthew's line was as good in playoffs as they are in regular season the Leafs would have beaten Tampa with ease last year. The Leafs aren't losing because David Kampf isn't good enough.

I wonder how much retention the Leafs would do to dump Matthews on us?
Why do you want him when he disappears when it matters most? Good goal scorer in the regular season, but a non-factor more often than not in the playoffs. He's not a leader by any stretch of the imagination. But he's going to want $14 million+ and he'll probably get it because NHL GMs are lunatics and because the right team can cover for his inadequacies. I wouldn't want to be saddled with that contract when he doesn't even appear interested half the time.

You give up 7 you're going to lose. I didn't watch the first game so can't really comment on why but I watched the series last year and they didn't lose because of Matthews imo. I don't believe their roster is built for the playoffs. They'll need to make changes and like I said multiple times, send that bun to AZ! We have a GM and coach that will put the right players around him, not spend a ton of cap on skill and ignore too much of what you need to win in the playoffs.

I'm not suggesting the Matthews line has ever caused the Leafs to lose. But IMO when you demand $11 million and light it up all season for years the expectation has to be a little more than breaking even most night, it should be expected that Matthews/Marner win games not just tread water. And they have not done that at all in playoffs enough to matter.

I thought that McCabe hit was a headshot and Bunting was just stupid. This is a very poorly officiated game.
Bunting flopped on a near identical play prior that drew a penalty. What really makes me shake the head is Cernak looked like he was going to attempt the same thing and initiate contact for interference but bunting throws an elbow instead. Embarrassing sequence.

I think Bunting thought they were both going for it and made a really bad play. No excuse.

He was trying to pull a Forsberg, but him getting the elbow up and being so far away from the boards just looks bad. The act by bunting may not have been malicious but it looks ugly for sure.

Absolutely. Worthy of the 5 minutes and a 1 game suspension imo. However Dreger just said he's hearing calls for 3 games??? IMO that's way over the top.

Isn't it typically two regular season games or one playoff game for this type of penalty?
That's the thought process. He got 3 games. I'm not sure this play is worse than the Hartman hit on Ehlers that got 1 regular season game?
