I haven't thought about "Hot Licks" in forever. I haven't heard this song in donkey years. Dang. The nerd in me likes the Mick Ronsonesque cocked-wah tone Dacus has going on here. His intonation is superb. From the initial slide at 1:23 to the end of the interlude is hooky as it can be.
Ronson (& Bowie, et al.) with some kind of gadget giving him a slide-like effect near the pickups when he's bending notes on the neck at the headstock end.

That's an ebow. Fripp didn't use that on the original for Heroes, they recorded the track multiple times and stacked it up - Fripp happened to basically sync the whole thing even though he wasn't using the other tracks.

I'm only familiar with Fripp from King Crimson (which I enjoy). Will have to explore (willingly).

Fripp uses a bunch of sustain technique and didn't use the device. I've seen KC do a version of Heroes live and he doesn't use it. I admit to being fascinated at times by gadgets for altering guitar sounds. :D

Reeves Gabrel used a sustaniac to great effect during his time with Bowie/Tin Machine, BG. It's another device that generates a magnetic pulse that effects all six strings at once as opposed to single string use with an e-Bow. It's housed in what looks like a standard neck humbucking pickup. Fun to mess with. Pair it with a digitech whammy pedal and good times ensue.

Since you guys are Bowie and KC fans, I just want to say that I kind of adore Belew's work in both bands. That era of KC isn't the favorite of a lot of fans, but as a young cat with big ears that stuff drew me in big time. He wasn't amazing like Holdsworth, he was just weird. Weird in a way that was fun.

Guitar nerd story: Elliot Easton and RTBaker (during the recording of 'Since You're Gone' from 'Shake it Up') came up with the idea of putting electric tape across all but two of the strings on EE's guitar - letting the strings with no tape ring while those with tape couldn't vibrate. By cleverly manipulating feedback at deafening levels EE could just slide his finger up and down the neck using this endless sustain technique as an ersatz e-bow type attack.

That Reeves is the guitar player for the Cure now is still weird to me. And mentioning Belew brings this back to mind:

Always appreciate a good cover -

And something that I regularly lose track of over the years is this tune -

So now I will forget that it's in here too.

I really want to avoid anything to do with politics in this thread, but it will eventually happen intentionally or not. I will break that seal here. I’ll post a remix from that well known right wing band Rage Against the Machine. Musically it’s how you expect it to go as an EDM song, but there’s no vocals, so it’s boring as shit the same time.

This song I love how it goes, because it pulls no punches. There’s not a lot of songs out there that use Biblical lyrics but say that’s BS. Meg Myers has an amazing voice. She has that weird sound where she can hits notes but is still manly.

This is the hardest hitting song that has been done, aside from the one by the same band that has been scrubbed from the Internet, and it’s whatever.

A good song is a good song no matter what

EXTRA: “politics” are not allowed here beyond a 1st statement, regardless of your question

I think I am annoying Nate and my wife with all the ideas I have for what his goal song choice should be.

Largely because he is a goalie and not a particularly athletic one. But, he did score a goal during the alumni game last fall...

This would be my #1 choice and I would expect him to do the Superman celly like he did when he played youth hockey.

He has gotten into Nirvana and I think this might be the best one from their catalog.

This would also be a good one and it's from a Syracuse guy.

Paramore was incredible live. Setlist was a great mix of a lot of their two newer albums and some older stuff. Only left wishing they would've played All I Wanted because the notes Hayley manages to belt on the chorus are insane

That rise against song is an absolute banger. When he says "the shotguns loaded" its so powerful. They've never put out a cd i didnt like.

My buddy has done an impressive amount of cover songs with some heavy hitters in the punk scene. This is one of many he’s done.

Let’s do a band from New Jersey covering a band from Iceland.

I was a fan of both of these bands in high school. Both appeared on the soundtrack of previous NHL games but you never knew that. Both were also “Christian” bands and they wanted nothing to do with that.

Ignore everything I’ve posted in this thread so far. If you have a kid, make them listen to this. It’s a “happy” remix of a late 90s song and it will always be relevant. Looking at you @Chainshot, @Jim Bob and anyone else that has young teens or early 20s kids. They’ll think we’re idiots but this song is by one of the most popular directors in Hollywood

I pull together a highlights video each year of photos and videos of my family. I have been a bit slack and haven’t done 2022 yet, but Roll the Bones is my choice of music for it. Love that song.

2021 was Todrick Hall - Mask, Gloves, Soap, Scrubs.
