The All Encompassing Diaz Thread

We can't keep Markov and Diaz in the lineup, and even though Markov is a shade of his former self, he's still an elite talent. So many were quick to dismiss Gonchar as 'stick a fork in him, he's done' a few years ago, yet he still has a place in a younger, bigger Sens defence. Keep Markov until Beaulieu is ready, and find more size on D.

Question is, what can we get for Diaz? One year left on his contract, 1.2mil, decent offensive skills... Any takers?

Yes, he should have a roster spot next year. He was great up until his concussion.

I'm wondering how good or bad he would have been at the end of the season, had he not been sidelined. I think he benefited from having played in Europe and being in better game shape than a lot of players in the league. Not sure he would have looked as good had the season started in October for everyone.

I wouldn't shop him, but would I be ready to trade him? Certainly.
As things remains, he starts our season as our 3rd D next season.

I think he gets a roster spot next season, but I also think that it is better for the organization to move one of our puck-moving defensemen.

I don't see us getting the value we would expect from a player like Diaz, and he seems to only be getting better. The benefit of trading him doesn't seem as valuable as a roster spot. But if we do get good value for him, I would not object. We do need to work on our defensive play, and he is average in our own zone.

No one singled out Diaz, but everyone has pretty much come to the same conclusion.

Then get another big body in the Top 6, like most suggest. (It IS a pressing need.)

Who is singling Diaz out? It's pretty much a given Weber and Kaberle are gone. So, when discussing puck movers, it's about Diaz and Markov. Markov being Markov, it's a touchier subject, hence Diaz being the player in play. Kind of logical.

Gorges would be the sounder choice for replacement, but I don't think we'll be able to unload him very easily. Diaz is a very tradeable asset.

No, I was comparing the situation. I didn't have an another example so readily available in my mind.

Like I said, I'm all for moving a puck moving defenseman if it improves the team.

But the poll is titled "Should Diaz have a roster spot" - yes, he's a Top-6 NHL defenseman. If we can move him to improve our team - do it. But I'd say that about any player.

If we could trade Diaz and/or Gorges to get a little bit meaner/bigger.

Hmm I hadn't thought of that. Very good point.

The thing about our D is that I like each player individually. Subban is elite, Markov is a good PP quarterback and a great leader, Diaz is an above average puck moving D, Emelin is a great stay at home D with some offensive capabilities, Gorges is all heart and a great leader, and Bouillon is a great vet who isn't afraid of anyone. Then you have rookies like Tinordi and Beaulieu who look very promising. The problem is at they don't mesh well TOGETHER at all. I have no problem with them individually but together? Nope.

I think that Bergevin needs to move Diaz. I'm sick of seeing this super-soff D get killed every game on the opposition's forecheck, and we can't clear rebounds effectively in front of our own net. We need to add some size and toughness. This is what I would like to see next season...

Bouillon needs to be a depth defenceman, not a top-6. I'd also remove Gorges from the top 4 - his play just isn't reliable enough to be playing top-4 minutes - and keep him with one of the rookies on the bottom pairing to help them develop.

Diaz is a puck-moving defenceman and he has some value. We gotta move him and acquire a big top-4 d-man. They aren't cheap. But puck moving defencemen aren't necessarily cheap either.

1. It gives an extra incentive to Therrien to scratch someone, who would likely be that Big Tough Defenseman (if he's not better than Emelin or Tinordi), for his rarely effective warrior Bouillon.
2. On the back-end during a PP, the second unit will be 2 out of 4 defensive or physical defenseman which would likely be Bouillon and Gorges.

I'm a firm believer that we need 3 PMDs and 3 physical/defensive defensemen to be a well-balanced and effective team. Markov needs Emelin, Gorges needs Subban, Diaz could have an interresting chemistry with Tinordi.

This. I'm leaning towards Gorges though. I think he still has a good reputation around the league so he probably has more value. I'd prefer a bigger more physical stay-at-home D to pair with Diaz and I'm really tired of Gorges' uselessness at the offensive blueline.

Gorges isn't physical. Emelin hits, but wouldn't call him a crease clearer. Tinordi could, in 2-3 years develop into a good crease clearing guy, but he isn't that today and don't rush him. Nathan B is a PMD to be in a couple of years. Need still is a big crease clearer .

I'm warming up to this plan. As others have said, Gorges has the mentality of a warrior and talks the talk but, unfortunately, he just doesn't walk the walk. If we can fetch some big, physical, crease-clearing D-men for them, I say go for it.

The upcoming draft has Nurse, Ristolainen, Zadorov and Morin that can all play a hard physical game. Bergevin has the possibility of moving Diaz and a 2nd round pick or our 1st rounder for a player like Zadorov. I hope that given an opportunity to draft one of these four and draft Diaby in the 2nd round. That will enhance the physical dimensions for the future, there is still a really soft forward corps to deal with. Timmins needs to be at the top of his game at the 2013 Entry Draft, with two extra 2nd's and an extra 3rd maybe they can accomplish picking these players one way or another (UFA's) this summer.
