What year is this?

First full season in the NHL and you want him for the Sophomore season when we need to make the NHL? hard pass. Find a D swap for Byram that makes sense, or use Byram for the forward help and something else for D.

Uh, what? You can “hard pass” all you want, I’m not suggesting a trade the Sabres should make, and didn’t even say I wanted him outright. I’m realistically considering what it would take to get Vlasic out of Chicago in response to Chainshot’s post. Byram would not be close to enough, for the reasons I listed.

Along with a Fabbro UFA signing and nothing else:

Benson - Norris - Thompson
Kulich - Rossi - Tuch
Zucker - McLeod - Krebs
Malenstyn - Kozak - Greenway

Byram - Dahlin
Power - Fabbro
Samuelsson - Clifton
JBD

I’m swinging for a top 6 forward to push Krebs out of the lineup.

I think Samuelsson should be shown the door.

And I’m getting a more accomplished center than Kodak for the 4th line

Sone Wild fans would make this trade:

Peterka and Quinn

- for -

Rossi and Stramel
As the one who floated the JJP and Quinn for Rossi plus idea......Stramel would be a fine plus. I do that all day.

Changing gears - would floating a trade with say Byram as the principle from Buffalo for Vlasic from Chicago be something they could talk Davidson into?
I don't think Davidson would be dumb enough to deal Vlasic this offseason. However, if he was....I want in on Byram for Vlasic. I'd even add something semi-substantial. He's exactly the style of defenseman we need, even if he is left-handed.

AFP projecting Pius Suter at 4 x 3.925M.

He could be a sneaky center pickup. I think vancouver did some nice things last offseason, but fumbled with other stuff. still jealous of their sherwood signing at 1.5M.

Suter seems to be well-rated by Canucks fans. I always see them talking about him being able to fit in anywhere in the lineup.

JJP Byram for Spurgeon + Rossi
Sign Fabbro
Samuelsson + Rosen for crouse

Benson-Noris-TT
Zucker-Rossi-Tuch
Greenway-Mcleod-Quinn
Beck-X-Crouse

Dahlin-JBD
Power-Spurgeon
Johnson-Fabbro
Why would you trade for Crouse to put him on the 4th line and get 10 minutes a game?

Our roster is just a lot of pieces that don't match.

Greenway on the 4th line, Crouse on the 3rd. Quinn is the odd man out.

Yeah, I'd like to see someone like that rather than trying to to build a shut-down 4th line which hasn't worked for us most of the past 15 years, with a center like Lafferty

does he fit here though? That's likely near what your giving McLeod as a 3C and I'm pretty adamant that Norris is 2C not a 1C (but happily proven wrong).

perfectly fine with Kozak as 4C with Malenstyn but give him something better hopefully than Krebs, (Dump Lafferty yes) until Wahlberg is ready for ie.

I think Krebs is starting to earn his keep as a bottom 6 energy and effort guy who can chip in a bit.

I made no other moves, just the two that I mentioned, to give a look at the roster. More would need to be done.

It was a great trade idea, which is why I went with it.

What is realistic doing this summer ? Its not realistic to trade for multiple players as the Sabres never do this . So Max maybe 1 or if they shake things up 2 trades.

The roster top 9 seems set as Benson, Kulich, Quinn need to play in top 9 atleast. Same goes for, Peterka, Norris, Thompson . Zucker and McLeod Also seems set . Maybe 1 top Center or winger and push someone down to 4 th line . Norris Will have injuries Also. Seems pretty set on forward group if not trading someone and upgrades.

Peterka Norris Thompson
Zucker McLeod Tuch
Benson Kulich Quinn
Greenway Kozak Krebs
Lafferty, Malenstyn

Samuelsson Dahlin

Byram Clifton

Suter would have been a great pickup this past offseason -- but I struggle to see him as anything more than a 3rd line center who's awful in the dot. Given that we have McLeod to hopefully be our 3C long-term....I don't see the need for Suter. And I sure as hell ain't giving that deal to a 4th line center.

Do you think Vlasic would even be available at a non-ridiculous ask?

I’m a huge Vlasic fan and have mentioned him before, and i don’t think Byram plus something else would be enough, unless that something else was as enticing as Byram.

Vlasic is built like Power, less offense but high defensive IQ and great positioning, as you probably know. And a Chicago suburb kid to boot. I just can’t see the Hawks trading him unless it’s like Byram and Benson or something equally appealing.

I don't know - Korchinski has stalled out developmentally and things are weird in Chicago. I would like them to have an actual consistent play killer among their defense and it seems like Chicago could use a LHD with offensive chops. Granted, they may wind up with Schaefer in this draft but we know how long that takes to pay off developmentally. Just riffing on what other teams seem to be also rudderless and have something this team doesn't (in this instance, a LHD who is actually good at defending).

Feels like so much of potential lineups next year hinges on if Norris is actually good (and healthy).

Pretty nervous about both

More than a little nervous about Norris. Now they went from a top two who I have questions about their ability to win their matchup through smart or at least instinctive hockey to having one of those and a guy who is made of glass.

Another way to look at it would be "does suter provide 2M additional value than Lafferty?".

I think there's a chance that having a 4th competent center could have some snowball effect. For example, my opinions of jack quinn are well documented, but his numbers away from cozens this year aren't terrible. Imagine if having a reliable center brought out the better part of Quinn's game, it would be massive swing.

If we drop Lafferty and add suter, that brings our forwards to about 56% of the current cap (even factoring in an 8M Peterka extension). 56% is league average.

(Side note: That's part of of the issue I have with Norris I guess. Before we paid him 8 we had a discounted C spine, and could overpay a 4th line guy.)

The simple answer is someone goes. I think Peterka and Kulich are the two main options to move on offense. You essentially have a top 9 that needs to play. Benson is a guy we need more of. Quinn is not worth anything and still has potential. Tuch is a possibility if he wanted out. You are looking at improving the C spine by moving a valuable piece in Peterka or Kulich. If you move JJ, Kulich slides to the wing. Rossi is kind of the perfect play here imo. Peterka for Rossi. Maybe we lose goal scoring, but Peterka is a defensive liability still. Kulich+ could also work to simply upgrade C to keep JJ. If Adams is giving up on Quinn, which I think he needs a strong offseason and evaluate next year first, he could move out.

I am 100% for trading Byram for a RHD that plays defense. I want a more consistent team that plays solid defense more than I need to be the best 5v5 team offensively and nothing else. Samuelsson should be traded or bought out.

Kevyn was such a big Glass Joe fan that he traded for Glass Josh.
