The 2024-2025 Roster Thread

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

It is sad that nowadays, if a kid isn't Draisaitl in his second season, he is a bust. Fans are insane. Complaining about Benson's offense? The kid can't even drink legally yet. Peterka sucks because he isn't a defensive stalwart? C'mon man.

With Greenway coming back, I doubt Quinn is a better 3rd line RW option than Greenway is next season.

And yes, after 14 years out of the playoffs and Adams being too patient with his build, I think they need more shortsighted decisions being made. Hoping that kids work out this year is not the path they should continue down, IMO.

Sure.. Greenway was better than Jack this year. I wouldn't place money on that being the case next year or years to come.

There is about 10 other different reasons why the Sabres have been unsuccessful this year before we even start to get to Jack Quinn so the whole 14 year nonsense is absolute bullshit. Greenway has been a part of that 14 yr thing for the last 3 years.

For a team that can't attract top 6 players here .. it's absolutely hilarious that some want to trade away 2 of our best home grown talent with the opportunity to become top 6 talents so we can go out and sign someone like Gustav Nyquist or some shit

This is so spot on, yet so frustrating.

I specifically remember Adams talking about this a couple years ago. He wanted his prospects to thrive in the NHL, and not just tread water.

Yet what does he do? He has Quinn + Peterka locked into NHL roster spots after a good AHL season. He puts Benson in the NHL at 18. Owen Power was getting some of the most NHL TOI as a 19/20 year old. Krebs and Samuelsson likely could’ve spent more time in the AHL.

Personally, the most frustrating debate I’ve had with people was going into the 22-23 season, people telling me “we have no room for free agents” and “we don’t want to block x or y”. You sign veterans and you force the kids to earn their way onto the roster every night. If they bypass the vets on the depth chart - you slot the vets lower in the lineup/trade them/bury them/ride out the contract. What you don’t do is leave a ton of cap space for nothing and just hope your kids have a linear development. Over-marinating your prospects is typically not a bad thing.

Was an Athletic article from awhile back. Wasn't about the Sabres.

You mentioned somewhere else it was anonymous, I think.

I’m definitely curious who this might be. The “won’t win any more cups” would narrow it down (if we take it literally that this team won at least one cup).

Racking my brain. Of course, it’s telling in itself how difficult it is to think of another team that’s eschewed veteran players and iced such a young inexperienced lineup as Buffalo has been in recent years.

Has anyone done the exercise of taking out our 13 game losing streak and seeing what our point total for the year would have been with that points %? Just trying to prepare myself for what the excuse will be at the end of the season.

0-10-3 in that stretch, so without it they are 28-25-3 which is 0.5267857142857143 so a whooping 86 point pace. Which is still crap.

I don't think anyone WANTS to trade him away. Its being rumored that Peterka doesn't want to be here. There is a difference.

If he doesn't want to be here then you need to entertain offers because sooner or later he will bolt.

The only person in the local media I can see bringing that fact up is Fairburn in The Athletic. I've seen at least one well known media member push the "If you take that stretch out everything would be fine" narative.

We have 4 more years of team control. Peterka has very little leverage.

Just give him his QO and negotiate a deal. If he doesn’t want a long term deal, then offer a 2 or 3 year bridge deal. If he doesn’t want that, then offer a 1yr deal above his QO. If he still doesn’t want to sign that, then tell him its his QO or nothing and let him sit if he wont take that.
Agreed, I dont want people to assume "we evaluate" means we trade him. There are lots of ways we keep JJ even if he isn't keen on being here right now

100% take the deal. Prefer 3.5. His goals are not sustainable. 21% shooting is not sustainable.
I'd love to get him at 4M a year, but I think he is going to want closer to 5, so maybe 4.5 is that middle ground. 21% is unsustainable, but he is also primarily a defensive deployment, so a small bump in zone share may offset that shooting percentage coming down to earth.

Is there any credibility to that rumor? It seems like posters have repeated it enough that half the people think it is fact when I haven't heard it from anyone credible

Yes, there is. Or at least I believe so from what I have read at the trade deadline he was almost traded to the Rangers according to their beat reporter. It was also talked about on TSN. It was around the same time Dahlin had a conversation with Adams....Where there is smoke there is fire.

I can post what was being said. The point being is if Peterka doesn't want to sign here then you trade him for an equal player.
