Cozens for Crouse+Kesselring remains my favorite, realistic idea. I think Kesselring has a really good chance at excelling in a larger role, and he could be the answer next to Power.
If we could do that deal, and then turn and work a prospect and pick for Carlo in the offseason, and Joker is dealt for a pick at the deadline. Clifton dealt for a low pick as well.

2025 d core:
Byram (extended) - Dahlin
Power - Kesserling
Carlo - Sammy
x: Gilbert, Ryan Johnson
$35M on the top 6
Expensive, but honestly necessary... Having Thompson and Tuch on cheaper deals gives us flexibility here.

Carlo plays the right side. I’m generally not a fan of that lineup because it looks expensive as hell, but sure.

Carlo needs a PMD in a pair, then he plays better. Obviously Sammy is not suitable for this. Perhaps swapping Carlo with Kesselring is an option. You can also try to split Byram with Dahlin and make three different pairs with three PMDs for the sake of interest.

I honestly look at how the Lightning put together their d core. Expensive, big, good with their stick, and nasty when they need to be. Byram would be the smallest guy back there, and he is plenty nasty with his stickwork

I like how the Knights structured their defense - top three are pricey and then everyone else is value.

I was ruminating a deal with LA around Power for Clarke, Gavrikov, +
The latter is said to be questionable to resign with the Kings, so it would probably be costly for the Sabres, if at all possible. Still, I think it would make their d-corps more balanced.

Tampa’s d-corp is good at playing defense, both as individuals and as a group. Outside of Dahlin, none of our group has shown that. Byram may love to use his stick but he’s too small and can’t physically clear guys from the front of the net. Neither he nor Power are a comparable defensively or physically to what Tampa rolls out.

Plus Tampa consistently spends past the upper limit. They won their Cups with around 15-20mil in payroll above the upper limit. So spending big on defense wasn’t an outlier to how they spent on the overall roster. I don’t envision us spending like that.

I like that you were thinking outside the box with the d-group you put together. But what I’m seeing is 3 dmen (Dahlin/Carlo/Kesserling) covering for the other three (Byram/Power/Sammy). Maybe move on from the ones that need to be covered instead of paying a fortune to cover for them. Especially when 2 of the 3 will be the highest paid dmen on the team (assuming Byram gets extended). Which would be yet another Adams f*** up.

That 2nd trade isn't nearly enough value going to Ottawa. Gotta add there.

I want zero part of that Anderson contract, especially given the utter lack of production there.

Vancouver isn't likely to want Power for EP40.....especially not considering what they've done recently. The stuff you're sending to Ottawa for Tkachuk is likely what Vancouver would want as part of the package for EP40.
