In fact, trading both might have been the best decision. Byram plays with Dahlin and is completely dependent on him, and I'm not sure he can carry his own pair. And we don't even need Byram next to Dahlin, almost anyone can be there and thrive, a more defensive guy for example, or just a complementary player like Fabbro.

Byram isn't "completely dependant" on Dahlin.

But his metrics are bad and when Dahlin was injured he didn't help much and his pairing metrics dropped. As I said I don't see any point in using Byram with Dahlin. Trade one of Power/Byram and add two more defensive top 4 D's to balance the defense.

tired: mitts for byram was a horrible move, byram stinks
Wired: mitts for byram was a great move, mitts stinks
Inspired: mitts for byram was a move, they both stink

I just posted his 5-on-5 stats when Dahlin was out and for the season as a whole. That Rono chart is full of it.

And what is this then?

Feel free to go back a page and spend some time looking at the numbers for when Dahlin is in the lineup and when he's not. JFresh charts are a convenient way to put zero context on things. It's like trying to say that all of Power's issues are because of one particular partner - he's getting his ass kicked with everyone but Dahlin too in terms of high danger chances for and against (which tracks for someone who is terrible at preventing HDC's that he's losing it with everyone but Dahlin except surprisingly Cliffy).

JFresh does not encapsulate any sort of context.

Unfortunately, the sample size of pairs when Dahlin was absent is very small, so I usually trust EH or Jfresh more, since they have metrics for a long time, plus I am not too strong in all these advanced metrics.

His wrist injury was due to a shot block (and McAvoy kicking him in the skate boot). He has had a couple of tilts - the one where he and Nielsen are punching one another down on the ice remains a vivid memory for me. But I don't think he's broken a hand in any.

Yeah I remember the blocked shot thing.. I thought earlier in his career he did it.. but I googled and couldn't find anything so must be mistaken

The jist of allll this talk is that Dahlin is Awesome, and everyone else is just meh.

Is it not?

pages and pages of calling for truculence and no one but me is just staring at Beck with wide eyes? We criticized what we paid for him. Everyone did. But we rationalize it because he's an nhl player with good 4th line skills....

where was he again?

Malenstyne wasn't brought in to be a fighter for one.

And it's likely he didn't see the ice outside of PK time after that hit

As someone 50+…

I look at the current Sabres, as I look at a lot of younger guys now, I call them skinny jean pu$$ies, or maybe “hipsters.”

Der Jaeger mentioned the Bruins model a few months ago, and I bet along with intelligence, they also have a box for some sort of toughness, and that isn’t just a “knuckle dragger” thing but a mind set of if the pucks in the corner, it’s mine, and you’re going into that corner and fight for it.

If you want a game of free wheeling skill, go watch some of the European leagues on the bigger ice surfaces, the Sabres play in North America on the smaller, tighter ice surfaces…and while I like the Olympics high talent games, the NHL is all about winning 16 games at the end of the season where you need to fight for every puck.

they’re a bunch of wussy’s and I’d bet a lot of mittlestadts issues in Colorado are related, and it’s on display every game with Cozens. Since he got scrambled, he no longer plays a loose, hard hitting game.

Sucks that after 15 years of suffering, we get to watch a bunch of…..

It’s why Ted Nolan never has to buy a beer in Buffalo….he had limited talent but the guys played a hard nosed, never die style that won some games on sheer effort and outworking the other team. When was the last time we could say that the Sabres consistently outworked their opponent game after game?

Should have drafted Will Cuylle instead of Quinn .. just kidding… But Rossi and Perfetti would have looked good in the Blue and Gold. Things will change. In the long run this might turn into a positive.
