The 2024-2025 Roster Thread

Last season Pettersson had 89 points and I think he even played with an injury, that's a good 1C. This season, when Miller was not on the team, he was again PPG+. Just do it,

Personally, I'm not expecting "elite 1C" out of EP40. I'd expect "legitimate NHL 1st line center". Produces around PPG and plays a solid two way game.

Would he be overpaid? Well, yeah a bit. But by the end of that deal, that'll be the going rate for a legit 1st line center that's around PPG with a two-way game.
The challenge for EP40 getting to a PPG level in Buffalo will be the PP.

Since the start of 2022-23, EP40 has scored at 1.08 PPG with 0.71 ES PPG, 0.32 PP PPG, and 0.06 SH PPG. 30% of his points have come on the PP.

With as bad as the Sabres PP has been, we either get a huge boost with EP40 on it. Or, EP40's production gets dragged down significantly by the horribad Sabres PP.

Not sure if you specifically have the answer to this, but it's a good post to quote for this.

Does anyone have an idea where EP40 plays on the PP? Like is he on one of the walls? Bumper?

From the chatter Pettersson was close to going to Carolina for Necas, but I think the Sabres have the piece Allvin really wants long term now in Byrum. Lets hope KA uses this to take advantage of acquiring him before a team like Columbus/Ottawa, etc find a way to make the deal.

Then you revisit the Pittsburgh rumors and try and acquire M. Petttersson for a appropriate partner for Dahlin or Power going forward.

Kind of makes one wonder.....

If Allvin is really so desperate for a PMD.....why talk with Carolina? They don't have any spare PMD and Nikishin isn't coming over this year, certainly.

Morrow close. Necas > any our forward (Peterka/Cozens).
Probably more valuable yes.. but .. I value Byram more than Power atm.. I still haven't given up on Cozens.. he just can't be a Center. I don't care about draft picks right now.
Sounds reasonable, although I'm not a fan of Cozens. Imagine what would happen if he crashed on Pettersson's wing, it would be a shame.

So I assume we lose one of Byram or Power, the other stays? I doubt they both move. Though I doubt I even care anymore. Power is a tough trade I doubt Adams gets anyone up to his selling price.

In theory we could lose both, but then we have to get someone like that back. It's just that if we trade Power to Vancouver and Byram still wants to leave in the near future for some reason, that would be weird. Although Byram is an RFA anyway and we have some control.

Second one out probably is a D swap in some way.

Someone in the media said (with apparent certainty) that VAN would need a NHL center coming back as part of the return. I forget who but it’s somewhere on the main page.

It’s interesting that both Necas and Cozens have lingering questions about whether they’re an actual center or not, though Cozens is younger and has played a lot more C in the NHL than Necas.

Well, or we'll draft Schaefer.

With whom our vet D Jokiharju will play in a pair.

Is none of the above an option? I choose none of the above.

Soucy's got a full NMC, so I doubt he waives to come here. Juulsen hasn't proven to be an NHLer. We've currently got our own version of Deharwhatever in Clifton.

Forced to choose, it's Dehoweveryouspellit.
Do you think Willander might be the piece Adams is holding out for? I remember rumors of Buffalo really liking him at the draft.

I'm more than fine with Byram and Cozens straight up for Pettersson. If Adams is really trying to squeeze more out of them, he's not very bright. Anyone that watches Cozens night to night over the last few years can tell he's a low IQ player, which isn't going to change overnight. Sure, with the right type of coaching and role he can be a good role player, but Petey is already a legit 1C and is in his prime. If they're willing to do that deal, it's an absolute must to change their fortunes short and long term. It'd allow them to attack the offseason in a much different way. We could then look to trade one or two young wingers (Peterka/Quinn) and top prospects (Ostlund, Rosen) for an upgrade at wing or D. We could still use a top line winger pretty badly, as would probably need to top 4 defensive d-men.

It would slot the forwards much better than they are currently. You could probably either run Thompson as 2C (or 1RW), either way that's a huge win. You could then shuffle Kulich down to be 3C, Krebs back to 4C, etc.

Byram is a big loss as you'd then need to bring someone up from the depths to play with Dahlin. The hope there is that Dahlin can make most guys serviceable. They'd certainly need to look at upgrading their top 4 in the offseason with a few more defensive d-men. You could call up RyJo and see if he can take the opportunity and run with it (still think he's a good fit with either Power or Dahlin).

You make a move like this, then you re-sign guys like Zucker and Greenway to keep some vet stability with the intent to add a few more. Then, all of a sudden you're not the youngest team in the league and have solid center/forward depth and with a few shrewd moves on defense can be a much better team. Right now they've been banging their heads against the wall with the Thompson/Cozens/Krebs center spine that will NEVER work. Bring in a top dog and everything will (on paper) fall into place better. If this doesn't happen and he goes elsewhere for a similar/lesser package it will be beyond obvious that Adams can't hack it in this league or Pegula is too dang cheap.

Lastly, I still have a hard time believing that VAN does this deal. Perhaps it's my hate of Cozens that makes it feel impossible. But I have a hard time believing that VAN would want him in this deal if they've scouted him. The hope is that they believe that he's being "Sabred" and that he'll undoubtedly be better on their team. Byram is an attractive piece but is also due a pretty substantial pay raise. Complicated deal to finalize, so if we need to take someone else off their hands that is more of a cap dump, we should be willing.

It's exciting the thought of what Pettersson and Dahlin can do together. I smell chemistry.

Man... Rutherford is an odd duck.. so weird to admit you HAVE to do something.

I think he has tried every way possible to resolve this and it sounds like threatening a trade publicly is his last card to play.

If we trade Cozens for Pettersson we can use Tuch at his RW. If we keep Cozens we could use Tuch on the Benson - McLeod line and Cozens at RW with EP40. I think it would be interesting to see if Kulich could be a 2C with Tage on his wing or maybe a 3C, but then McLeod would probably be a 4C. From what I've read EP40 doesn't like to play with wingers who handle the puck a lot, so a guy like Garland wouldn't be a good fit on his wing.

See that’s the rub. Pettersson is paid like an elite 1C, but he hasn’t played or produced even remotely close for about a full calendar year now. Maybe he bounces back eventually, but I doubt anyone is offering “100 point player” value for him, because why on earth would they?
Maybe that’s what it will take to get him though. What if he is an 80 point player and solid defensively and Tage can score 40 for a few years on his wing. Would it be worth a bit of an overpay for that? We have a lot of assets.

This stuff is coming from Jim Rutherford.

There isn't going to be a resolution between the two players and it's negatively affecting the team. One of Miller or Petterson is getting traded.

He could very well be a 1C for 90 points in a normal environment and with a PMD like Dahlin. Hughes played with Miller a lot, but not with EP40 and they didn't have a PMD like that anymore. I would definitely overpay if I had no other choice and had to outbid another team. We won't find another player like him, they just don't have them available or they have NMC/NTC.

I just read Craig Custance's chapter in The Franchise about Rutherford over lunch today. He is one of the most transparent NHL FO people out there. So, if a reporter asks him a question, he does give him a straight, honest answer.

So, yeah, you can take these comments as what is really going on there.
