I just read Craig Custance's chapter in The Franchise about Rutherford over lunch today. He is one of the most transparent NHL FO people out there. So, if a reporter asks him a question, he does give him a straight, honest answer.
So, yeah, you can take these comments as what is really going on there.
I think there is no leverage there and all GMs know this, it has already been in the press and everything has been known for a long time. That transparency is refreshing and informative.
That said, if I was a nucks fan, I'd be livid that he's ruining any trade leverage.
I don't believe that is actually the case. Especially if they have multiple teams they are talking to.That transparency is refreshing and informative.

I don't think Cozens is low IQ, he wasn't in junior and his offensive reads were decent when Donny didn't have him focusing on center defensive assignments, and he read plays really well playing wing at the world's last summer. I just think his brain is overloaded with trying to learn to play D as a center, and now he's totally inside his own head and struggling because of it.I'm more than fine with Byram and Cozens straight up for Pettersson. If Adams is really trying to squeeze more out of them, he's not very bright. Anyone that watches Cozens night to night over the last few years can tell he's a low IQ player, which isn't going to change overnight. Sure, with the right type of coaching and role he can be a good role player, but Petey is already a legit 1C and is in his prime. If they're willing to do that deal, it's an absolute must to change their fortunes short and long term. It'd allow them to attack the offseason in a much different way. We could then look to trade one or two young wingers (Peterka/Quinn) and top prospects (Ostlund, Rosen) for an upgrade at wing or D. We could still use a top line winger pretty badly, as would probably need to top 4 defensive d-men.
It would slot the forwards much better than they are currently. You could probably either run Thompson as 2C (or 1RW), either way that's a huge win. You could then shuffle Kulich down to be 3C, Krebs back to 4C, etc.
Byram is a big loss as you'd then need to bring someone up from the depths to play with Dahlin. The hope there is that Dahlin can make most guys serviceable. They'd certainly need to look at upgrading their top 4 in the offseason with a few more defensive d-men. You could call up RyJo and see if he can take the opportunity and run with it (still think he's a good fit with either Power or Dahlin).
You make a move like this, then you re-sign guys like Zucker and Greenway to keep some vet stability with the intent to add a few more. Then, all of a sudden you're not the youngest team in the league and have solid center/forward depth and with a few shrewd moves on defense can be a much better team. Right now they've been banging their heads against the wall with the Thompson/Cozens/Krebs center spine that will NEVER work. Bring in a top dog and everything will (on paper) fall into place better. If this doesn't happen and he goes elsewhere for a similar/lesser package it will be beyond obvious that Adams can't hack it in this league or Pegula is too dang cheap.
Lastly, I still have a hard time believing that VAN does this deal. Perhaps it's my hate of Cozens that makes it feel impossible. But I have a hard time believing that VAN would want him in this deal if they've scouted him. The hope is that they believe that he's being "Sabred" and that he'll undoubtedly be better on their team. Byram is an attractive piece but is also due a pretty substantial pay raise. Complicated deal to finalize, so if we need to take someone else off their hands that is more of a cap dump, we should be willing.
Which defenseman would folks prefer in return as part of a theoretical Pettersson package?
Deshernais
Juulsen
Soucy
Assuming Byram wants to re-sign with Buffalo at a reasonable number, most people seem to agree with this. But it’s extremely unlikely that Byram wants to stay, especially if we are trading his best friend on the team in Cozens. This is why Byram is the one being proposed.
If Byram told Adams he loves it in Buffalo and will sign long term, then…well, sorry, I literally can’t even imagine that scenario.
My new conspiracy theory is that Adams is also trying to get Willander. And I read reports very early in the season about VAN wanting to ditch Hoglander’s contract for cap space. We're in it. Eyes open. If EP gets moved over Miller it's going to be to us.
Let's actually get across the finish line.
Is none of the above an option? I choose none of the above.
Soucy's got a full NMC, so I doubt he waives to come here. Juulsen hasn't proven to be an NHLer. We've currently got our own version of Deharwhatever in Clifton.
Forced to choose, it's Dehoweveryouspellit.
And here is the rub for me, a ton of people that are saying that the Sabres have to make this trade are expecting EP40 to be an elite 1C in Buffalo.
Maybe Adams is just working in some additional moving parts, and they have the EP trade all set
It's possible/plausible. But I think he's still considered a top or near-top defensive prospect.Do you think Willander might be the piece Adams is holding out for? I remember rumors of Buffalo really liking him at the draft.
"What they were asking for and what we were offering didn't align. I'm not sacrificing our future"“In on” but won’t consummate yet another deal is my expectation.
Not really. He can just tell a team wanting EP40 "Fine. I'll get what I want for JTM from another team and keep EP40". He can then turn around and tell a team wanting JTM: "Fine, I'll get what I want for EP40 from another team and keep JTM".That said, if I was a nucks fan, I'd be livid that he's ruining any trade leverage.
Adams knows his leash is short, that's why Pegula is allowing him to seek the trade. Pegula is getting old, old owners get more impatient. Adams will not last another failed season."What they were asking for and what we were offering didn't align. I'm not sacrificing our future"
I consider myself an optimistic-leaning moderate poster.Adams knows his leash is short, that's why Pegula is allowing him to seek the trade. Pegula is getting old, old owners get more impatient. Adams will not last another failed season.
Yup, or he'll gut the defense with this trade, and do nothing to fix it for the foreseeable future. I want EP, and would be happy to have him. Even if Adams did trade for him, I have zero faith he's going to have the ability to turn this roster into a playoff team.“In on” but won’t consummate yet another deal is my expectation.
Powers? The reason I hope Byram? A Sabre defenseman hasn’t had his name mis-spelled so often since Jason Woolley.
