Byram has already earned a solid contract, but I'm not sure whether he'll be in Buffalo. We still need to find a partner for Power, who also might not be the cheapest. The third pair will earn 7.5 million between them. There is something to think about.

Byram isn't being moved. Samuelsson will be moved or bought out.

Can't wait to see Byram traded for a late first a year from now because MOAR DRAFT PICKS. Real organizations don't end up constantly giving away their best assets because of theoretical cap concerns 5 years down the road.

Why would you buy him out when you could easily move him in a trade?

Hey look, Lance says Power needs a partner, Fjordy says Power needs a partner, I have said Power needs a partner.

Who hasn't? Kevyn Adams.

I would seriously kick the tires, I liked him better than Jiricek, I think he could actually be a good two-way defenseman. Finding the next Faber would be really good. He'll be 21 now if anything. Last season he seemed to play solid in the top 4 under Ruff. I think he's a smart player.

Samuelsson plays the sort of game that every playoff contender looks for at the TDL every year. He might be a little expensive, but the youth of Sammy would be enticing. A team like Toronto or the NYR might view him pretty highly. You will not need to buy out Samuelsson if you have to make choice between Byram or Sammy (something that I don't even think it an issue for the organization).

I wonder if NJ would move him because of this.

I would also wonder if he has enough of a defensive game to be what the Sabres D core is missing.

Well he's not a defensive D but I think he can be a good two way D, smart. You can also create three balanced pairings like Caps did. Nemec could play with Dahlin or Sammy and you could also add a defensive top 4 RD to play with Power.

Who's eating all the PK minutes with a D core of Dahlin, Byram, Power, Nemec, Samuelsson, & [TBD]?

And who is eating up these minutes now and are these players so bad? Dahlin can play on the PK, Power plays on the PK right now, Sammy is obvious, Clifton or the new defensive top 4 D, who will play with the same Power, for example. I don’t know if Nemec played on the PK in the AHL and maybe he will be good at it too. PK is not only about players, but also about the system of playing correctly. I don’t see a problem with this, set up the system and we have someone to play on the PK.

Yeah, well my plans are still to trade one of Byram or Power, so that's my option, you may not agree, but that's how I see it.

Most likely yes you’re finding a buyer, but I brought up the buyout because Sabres can pay him pennies on the dollar on the cap (I believe it’s about 800K) if they do because of his age.

It’s not a standard buyout

While that might be an option, if we're looking at buying out Sammy and that being a viable option, I would be afraid that this organization has sunk to another low as now they are really penny pinchers and winning has moved further back on the priorities for this organization with the cap presumably going up a bit, while the team operates on the hockey side millions with cap space to begin with.

While, yes it's an option, I doubt it's one that is seriously looked at, and IF it is looked at seriously, then we as fans have bigger problems to be mad about.

He can sign with the Sabres in summer. He's good enough to deserve being on a playoff team. Then he can come back and explain complicated stuff like passing and covering your mab.

In fairness, trading him reduces the likelihood of resigning him. Just happens all the time. But I'm fine with it. Your GM should be able to find a Zucker every off season.

Nemec would be. That's part of his pedigree as a smart play ender who can transition move the puck to safety.

That's not to say Buffalo would be trying to get Nemec or that Jersey considers moving him. We have at least one article from a player's home country per year that has something spicy in it that amounts to nothing in the NHL in terms of trades.

Not to paint with too broad a brush, but it seems like European players are more comfortable speaking openly and honestly with the press than their North American counterparts. Maybe it’s a culture thing
