The 2024-2025 Roster Thread

Things I learned today: Apparently my patience with Dylan Cozens has no limit.

Reading all these trade ideas and despite his struggles, I still have no desire to move him.

Power on the other hand... He even has some pretty analytics that should boost his trade value to some out there.
Heh - I'm in the same boat. I get that Cozens has been playing poorly for quite a while now. But I see that as mostly the result of playing center. His combination of size and skill wins in the playoffs. And I'd hate to see us sell low on him, only to watch some other team turn him into Kreider 2.0.

Power though? I...just don't know how likely it is that he's going to put it all together. Sublime passer in the offensive third of the ice. But just about everything else? That needs a lot of work.

I'd like to get Pettersson, Crouse and Kesselring. In the summer, try to add two defensemen from UFA, one vet for the third pair like Cole or Dumoulin, and the second top 4 RD to play with Power/Byram or Dahlin, someone like Kovacevic, Pionk, Fabbro. Well, if it doesn't work out, then a trade.
Do the Sabres have the ammo and initiative to get those moves done ? Not likely.

Do you feel Crouse could replace Greenway ?

I think there is, we have a lot of different assets.

Yeap, in the long run he may even be better than Greenway, he is physical and good at defense, but he has already had two seasons with 40+ points and 20+ goals in his career. We might even try it in the top 6 RW.

That's bad news.

Sounds like a Kasper deal...

Adams is such a fool.
While I like Kasper, it wouldn't make sense for us at this point.

He’s just trying to make a team in Lindy’s image. He wants his centers to all be defensive wizards. I honestly wouldn’t hate that deal, because I think Cozens’ contract is terrible, but I do think he’s the better player, now and in the future.

I think it was for Compher +

I seriously doubt it, it would make even less sense. Kasper is the one they wanted in the draft, he can play defense and he is a natural center. Compher is bad, even worse than Copp, I think. It would be very stupid.

Final Word

In addition to Compher, Copp, or Rasmussen, the Red Wings would likely need to include either Nate Danielson or Marco Kasper in a trade for Cozens. Apart from these two, I’m not sure Detroit has the young, NHL-ready talent that the Sabres covet. In my opinion, they’re better off keeping these prospects to pursue a bigger fish – say Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks.

Despite the flaws, Cozens could be a solid addition for the Red Wings. They need size up front and will have two open top-six spots this offseason. That said, the cost will be the ultimate determinant here, and the Red Wings should not overpay for a mixed bag like Cozens.

This is an interesting take from the Detroit side of things.

Detroit doesn't have the assets for Pettersson unless it's a center + defenseman and they don't want to trade their young D. From that perspective, our package for Pettersson would be more attractive because we have Power, Byram, Cozens and Kulich.

Only Buffalo could find a way to get younger by trading a 23 year old
It could also be more economical, which is what Terry wants. But Detroit doesn't have the cap space for Cozens anyway, so obviously some of their less-than-attractive assets would return to Buffalo.

Kevyn Adams won't make a trade before the week leading up to the TDL where he dumps UFAs for futures. Book it. He's incapable of pulling off a big trade. He's incapable of working another GM.

He's completely unqualified for this position, and though he continues to prove that decision after terrible decision, he's also never going to be fired because this franchise is a fluffy play toy for Terry, and now that he's no longer interested in losing $20million/year on his fluffy play toy, he won't be paying more people to not work for him. He knows that the Bills and their unbelievable success is the only sports legacy he'll be known for.

Whether we like it or not, the NHL is a 3rd tier professional sport, much closer in relevance to MLS and NLL than the NFL. It's best to just find another team or quit watching hockey.

McLeod has been better than Cozens this season. They have similar stats, but Cozens has played more minutes and gotten a lot more PP time. Especially since McLeod is a much better player without the puck than Dylan. Even though he had a cold period when their third line fell apart, he was still more responsible defensively.
