You think Quinn doesn't have a high IQ? I thought they used to think he did. But I'm so tired of all this that I'm ready for some pretty radical measures.
I think there are some shenanigans going on as well. Players pretending they can't learn, playing dumb to a certain extent, making mistakes so they eventually get shipped out. There is a formula there that smells like agents.

I think Quinn's a smart player. He was a guy that was played in key situations at the wjc he played in. Some talk in the other thread about off ice commitment. I have a hard time thinking these guys are giving up tho.. Just young team and lots of guys playing a line higher then where they would be slotted on most teams leads to mistakes.

If we could somehow get Petterson I would think it would be one of cozens/quinn/Peterka/Benson/byram, one of Kulich/ostlund/helenius + some form of picks?

I would like to see the defense revamped. I know I keep nagging about defense, call me old school.

I was always under the assumption that when building a team you start with the defense.

This team needs to be tougher to play against. Too much finesse on this team.

We need defense that is willing to clear out the front of the net. Its just not happening.

I totally agree with you, defense is just as important as attack. I totally want to rework our right side of defense. Clifton is questionable, if you can’t get someone better than him then you’ll probably have to play him, but he’s not perfect either. Two top 4 RDs need to be added to the lineup. I’d like to give Johnson a full chance with Clifton or someone better than him. I think Johnson can skate, get involved and move the puck, and having expirience physical guy on his side would be a natural fit. I don’t want to see our third pairing anymore where both guys are terrible with the puck, it’s just bad. Even if you look at the defense of teams like Caps, Canes and Devils, it's built differently. While I may be in the minority who would prefer to give Johnson a chance in the third pairing, he will be 24 years old, so it's now or never.

Rasmus Andersson would be a huge get and is still relatively young at 28. I don't see Calgary trading until the offseason though.

Noah Dobson? Problem is teams that are winning wont make a team changing trade and losing teams will probably want 1st round picks.

So we are stuck. Would love to see a hockey trade Top 6 forward for Top 4RHD.

I don't think Andersson and Dobson are good targets. Andersson doesn't have a long enough contract for our situation and he's not exactly the type of defenseman we need, although he might be good with Dahlin, but it's the same situation with Byram, where three defensemen want to play on the PP. Dobson is the same, too expensive (cost and contract), had problems with his play falling off this season.

Weegar would be perfect with Dahlin or even in the second pair, but I would rather consider him for the first pair. But full NMC, even though he is related to Rivet, I don’t think there are many chances. Although my philosophy is that you kick the tires on any player that suits you, even if he has NMC/NTC and maybe gets lucky somewhere, because don’t take money for asking.

UFA is unlikely, there will be few options, Ekblad? I doubt it, but I would try to get Kovacevic in UFA. But for me UFA is almost no, since few people will come to us, but still, again, they don’t take money for asking and you can overpay a little for the right player.

I'm looking for diamonds and potential options. For the second pair it's quite realistic, imo, and in theory even for the first, considering that we had Jokiharju there for many years.

Just example:

Dahlin - Weegar/Ekblad/Kovacevic/Pulock/Larsson
Power/Byram - Carlo/Whitecloud/Murphy/TVR/Kesselring/Chatfield/Helleson/Lamoureux/Korczak
Johnson - Clifton (in ideal TVR or Peeke)

Although if Dahlin was comfortable playing on RD and the coach was not against it, then this opens up more possibilities, since you can look for LD to play with Dahlin.

I don’t want Adams to make a trade just for the sake of making a trade. With our 13 game losing streak our players are at a low value. The Sabres are vulnerable for getting fleeced especially with a GM like Adams.

Yeah, he's not ideal but Tage at least has enough talent to somewhat mitigate his low IQ, unlike some of our other sub-optimal IQ forwards (see Cozens). Put him with some wingers with a few brain cells to rub together and he could be a passable 1C or a very good 2C.
That is the fatal myth. He isn't talented enough to not hamstring smart players. They know where the play should go and Tage goes solo and everyone looks bad and out of position. Tage kills zone entries with the extra puck dustings and the solo bs at the line. As a 2C sure. But he needs to be pushed down the lineup.

I don’t disagree, but in today’s NHL, the game is about puck possession and puck support. When your top 2 centers are poor at both, it makes everything more difficult.

You fix that, and you’ll see a lot of other areas improve.

You can't do one and not do the other, it's a half measure, that's Adams 2.0. If you want to have the best chance of making the playoffs, then you improve all the gaps.

Sure, but you can’t do everything. And I’d rather use the trade value the Sabres have on centers first. Guys like Weegar are available every year.

I don't agree, I think you can do everything, no, well it doesn't mean you don't do what you suggest. I just don't see a problem doing both, and it doesn't have to be Weegar or anyone else. Without a normal defense it will be difficult for you, Carolina with Kotkaniemi as 2C will go to the playoffs, but they have a good defense and system. Devils does both. Caps does both.

You’re missing the point. Assume Adams trades Power and Thompson in addition to the media reported Cozens/Byram for Petterson trade.

You still need a center and 3 D. Unless you’re trading Power and Thompson in quality for quantity deals, Buffalo will end up still needing either D or a center. I’d much rather shore up center first and work later for D.

If Buffalo had a Hischier or Suzuki, it would allow Thompson (or even Cozens) a lot less stress to just be the scoring guy.
But we don't have them, if we had Weegar and Marino, it would alllow Dahlin and Power less stress and it would be much easier for them.

No, what does that have to do with it? I mean, you have to get all things done in the offseason, and I don't want Adams to do that.

Maybe I didn't understand what you were talking about, Idk.

Here’s what I’m talking about. This is illustrative.

Cozens and Byram for Petterson

Power and Quinn for McTavish and Zegras

Center position is completely fixed. Now you still have Thompson. Maybe a trade to Calgary for Andersson? That means they have Dahlin and Andersson on D. Even if they trade Peterka for a D, they’ll still need another top 4 D.

I’d much rather nail down center like this and have to figure out another D. Free agency and off season trades would work, but it might not be able to be done all at once.

In your scenario, we'd still need TWO top 4 defensemen unless you're pegging Sammy to return to what we've seen.
