The 2024-2025 Roster Thread

Power is in a clear different tier than players like Beniers and Rossi. And it’s only going to be more obvious over time.

It’s classic fan criticism to look at young developing players who excel at certain things, and then focus on things they don’t do well yet (Peterka is super fast, great drive, excellent goal scoring ability, but BOARD BATTLES; Power is an elite puck moving defensmen and is generating awesome 5v5 offense; BUT NOT PHYSICAL). You see it all the time. Look at Edmonton fans: McLeod doesn’t hit and isn’t physical!

How about we let young players develop those traits, and expect more from their surrounding cast. Wanting to trade players like Power and Peterka isn’t happening, and it’s a ridiculous idea.
So who do you want to trade to improve the roster? By the way, I don't want to trade Power, I'm just curious. Our attack needs to improve, our defense needs to improve.

I think this team has a wealth of prospects and draft picks to acquire established players. The time to do that was the off-season, and that window likely won’t open back up until towards the trade deadline.

I don’t think a pure hockey trade makes a ton of sense for this team as we need to add talent, not just exchange it.

No matter how many games I've watched, we almost always have a problem with players being front of the net, our defenders have the ability to shot, but no one goes to the net, I don't understand, either our forwards don't know how to do it, or we just don't have enough guys like Kreider. Although I think we also really lack a playmaker in the top 6.
Kreider isn't doing much of that this year either though. Which might be a reflection of Zibanejad's decline, but that emphasizes your last line about needing a playmaker.

Maybe he and zegras together would be the secret sauce, but I still have doubts about zegras. For as sad as these past few games have been, I think we do have a harder working team than in the past and don't want to bring in too much softness

Well, if you add a top 6 forward or two, someone will have to be removed, we simply won't have a place in the lineup. In TDL it might be too late, I don't rule it out.

Softness is not the issue, skill is. McLeod is soft or not physical, but that doesn't mean he's bad. Cozens hits, but he's a bit dumb and not a playmaker. Zegras is probably one of the few potential 2Cs that could be available and he's a good playmaker. Kreider is just a type of player, there are others.

I’m not sure why he feels its low event. We’re just not getting high danger chances. But we’re certainly surrendering them. To steal a football phrase…. They’re losing the battle in the trenches. In this case that applies to the areas in and around both nets.

We’re currently …

27th in HDCF/60
22nd in HDCA/60

Yeah. They're mediocre again this year. Rinse and repeat. Im so tired of watching this 'brand' of hockey. Can we go back to when Ott was captain? Yeah, we sucked just as much, but boy were there some brawls.

Expecting players who don't go to hard areas to start going to hard areas due to someone who can make nifty passes is foolish. Find people who get to the net to do their scoring and put them with the collection of contact averse forwards already trying to make nifty passes.
It's not connected, we don't have a playmaker, it's just obvious, at least for me. They often can't play the puck, and we have Cozens and Peterka playing on PP1, it's bad.

They also don't get to the net to score.
Several players are getting through, although one of them is injured at the moment. That's already two problems in attack, and also that some players are still young, they don't produce as much as Adams/we expected from them.

I’d add having a soft d-corp thats not great defensively is contributing to our inability to effectively defend in and around our net.

Seeing the Islanders absolutely plant people who got around their crease was refreshing since most of the time we Sabre fans are subjected to panicked, chaotic stick reaching and general watching.

I still don't understand how Wilford is still here.

Ruff didn't bring anyone with him, why? He wasn't allowed to do it? He didn't have any connections left? He was lazy? What the hell is going on in this organization of idiots.

Anyone else worried Benson will get Buffaloed and stop trying?

It worries me that this kid will start to give up watching the other players float around the ice.

I don't understand why Ruff allows it?

Shouldn't Ruff be explaining that to the players in practice? If they don't clear the crease or put some lumber on the opposing players during the game he explains it to them when they get back to the bench or sit their ass.

I know its extreme but it really isn't. There is no choice or we will continue to watch a shitshow.

Because it's cheaper to pay the guys under contract than to pay them AND their replacements would be my guess.

Only not this guy.
It feels like Benson is better than that but every player the sabres bring in seems to be taken over by the blob and become lazy with the rest of the group. Even Zucker the last few games feels like he is starting to give up.

Maybe they were tired last night after the road games out west and coming back and playing a day game then in the evening. I hope thats what it is but last night was one of the worst games I have seen this group of players play. It was also the laziest game I have seen Dahlin and others play.

Maybe some are injured I don't know...Its really baffling how much they dont want to win.

Zucker, Thompson, Cozens, and Quinn are well below their career averages of high danger chances, relative to all shot attempts.

I'm sure the roster can be improved, but our current group is also not playing to their abilities in that regard

Unfortunately or fortunately I couldn't watch the game, but from the highlights it seemed to me that they weren't that bad. I can't say about Dahlin, but I noticed that he plays very little physical game compared to previous seasons, maybe he just continues to play with an injury that never went away? Because I don't know what the refusal to play physical game is connected with, I liked that (evil) Dahlin more. Although Dahlin's metrics seem to be okay, on the level of guys like Fox, Heiskanen and Morrissey.

Sometimes they fall off the cliff, especially since Dumba had some injuries.
