I like our night.
Are these the exact moves I'd have made? I mean no, probably not. That's not very realistic on draft night.
Edvinsson has never really woww-ed me personally. That said, I've only been able to see the U18s and a couple of his games with the Frolunda men's team. None of his stuff from the U20s, aside from highlights. I didn't get a chance to speak with him, his coaches, etc. I love his size, love the way he skates, like his defensive instincts generally. As far as his iq and the way he reads the game, again I can't say he's woww-ed me but I really haven't seen enough to say he's "bad" in those aspects.
I think we should all be honest that a 6'4 mobile LHD from Frolunda was like a tailor-made Red Wings pick. Like if you don't personally love his chances of panning out as a top pairing guy that's fair enough, but I think we can all recognize that if we hit on this pick it fills a massive, massive need in our roster. For that reason I'm very much on board with the selection even if I personally have been a bit more impressed with guys like Clarke, Guenther, and Eklund. I mean this is our best LHD prospect since, what...? you'd have to go back like 15+ years.
I'm a Cossa fan, I've liked that fit for us in the late first for quite a while now. Can't pretend I'm some good goalie scout, but I like his tools. I think he's the best goalie prospect we've had in ages. As far as the trade up goes, ultimately I don't think it will matter a ton. If he's not an NHL goalie then it looks bad at #15 and it looks bad at #22. If he's a good starting goalie then it looks good at #15 and it looks good at #22. Ultimately, our brass thinks very highly of the player and felt that he might not be there at #22. They mobilized assets and got their guy. Whether Cossa is a quality NHL goalie will take years to figure out, but I'm just not going to be upset with our brass for going and getting a guy they clearly think can be a long-term solution in net for us.
I don't mind us burning some of the 2nd and 3rd rounders to improve the short/medium term roster and draft in quality > quantity. We took a lot of kicks at the can between '18 and '20, and we'll still draft plenty of kids this weekend. I've got no issue with the more aggressive strategy.
I get that not everybody is going to love these picks. But if you're honest I think you can at least recognize that, if we hit on these players, we'll have had a great night and filled two very glaring holes in our future roster.
