If the government were to make winter tires mandatory it would have to include a bursary or a rebate. Winter tires are very costly. Can you imagine a single mom with 2 children and working shift work, struggling to get by have to shell out 800 for winter tires.

As someone who had to drive the Yellowhead in a semi for years, everyone is to blame for that road. Yes the heavy traffic uses every lane (I made sure to let my drivers know when they were guilty of this), but if I had a dollar for every ************* *********** piece of **** that cut in front of my heavy unit pulling up to a red light, I would be happily retired. Everyone one on that road is an idiot.

And, dont slam on your brakes when you get a white out. It's on you to look at the road ahead before it happens and anticipate, that's part of winter driving.

I think you're responding to the wrong poster here. It wasn't me and I would never do that. Slamming on the breaks on a highway in bad road conditions and limited visibility is just looking for trouble and a way to get rear ended and start a chain collision. I'd be mad as hell if somebody did that in front of me on a highway.

Agree that theres a lot of poor drivers out there on the highway. But how about truckers that don't even maintain lane position while passing or being passed? This is happening a shocking amount in recent years and I strongly suspect from truckers that are getting heavy eyelids, mental fatigue, who knows. A friend of mine almost got killed by a trucker doing this last summer in daylight and sunny sky. The trucker verved into her lane during passing. That **** should happen never.

I've learned pretty quickly to treat all other drivers as sociopaths or distracted drivers. I used to get all livid anytime someone stopped a couple inches from my tail, now I just close my eyes and take a deep breath.. Then I remember, they have brain bruises and were never taught to drive properly in any condition.

If I see a semi speeding on my left rear on a snowy day I will start slowing to prepare for the impending whiteout

Sorry, was responding to multiple posts w/o quoting.

There are definatley some drivers out there who shouldn't be. Years ago, we had a guy flip one of our heavy units 2 blocks from the shop during his evaluation.

No worries sir. Wow. Not that I'm surprised. In a hot economy it seems that its harder to get people that are well suited to be driving. Probably the guy in question is a guy that would never even be getting evaluated in a more normal, non boom economy.
I think that's more the issue is the desperate need to find drivers and go begging and advertising:amazed: for them results in the bar being lower for professional drivers.

What kind of income do truck drivers make? It doesn't strike me as a highly lucrative job, but I could be wrong. Maybe if they were paid better the quality of the drivers would increase as people started taking it seriously as a career. I don't know, maybe there's nothing to that idea.

It's a tough job and not one that I would want to do.

This is Alberta; they probably make more than Doctors.

Do they though? Just curious?

EDIT: I just did some research because, hey why not, and it looks like entry level guys make decent money to start, so wage isn't really an excuse. Guess it's just not a job people want to do.

Owner operators make damn near nothing and if you're not an owner in the blue collar world the money you're not making as much as you think. Even in Alberta. Kids, if you're looking for a career, don't pick trucking.

No, drastically underpayed relative to Alberta based economy. Considering the positions of responsibility and potential liability its a race to the bottom gone wrong position. Trucking industry has been over run with cost cutting, heinous management practice and playing lowest possible overhead margins.

Its an industry that makes $. The truckers don't. That's why they're all scurrying around across the continent as quickly as possible like tired hamsters trying to make some coin and recoup expenses even if they are owner/operators.

That and its the same job everywhere, easy to get into, no education required

Any rig hand that says they have experience gets hired on to make 100K as a laborer type position with no skills, often no completed highschool, and really just knowing some people, looking the part, or showing up.

Although that bird has now flown as well.

Really all I've heard the last 10yrs in the industry is how dangerous it is working with coworkers that are grossly unprepared and contraprepared to be working in the industry.

Trucking used to be considered a skilled job. Considering what it involves it still should be. Especially longhaul. jmo, no vested interest.

Well, it looks like it's starting to get nice again. Still though ready for the patented snowstorm we'll have in April though.

Overall a really mild winter again. The freeze-melt cycle didn't seem as bad as it's been in recent years IMO. Only really had 3 or 4 days of substantial snowfall, and maybe 2 or 3 weeks of frigid temps since November.

Literally couldn't use my snowshoes this year most areas. Very little snowcover and what is was not powder but just coating over ice...:(

Bought snowshoes 2yrs ago and haven't once had ideal conditions since. I recommend more people buy snowshoes to elicit murphys law climate change...

Hope this keeps up for a bit. I still have an ice rink on my front sidewalk from the great job the snow crews left in front of it on the road. Basically makes it so any water run off from the road slides right onto my sidewalk. The little canal that I made with my ice pick to the drain grate seems to be working though.

But I can't complain. Been a sweet winter so far, and Spring is just around the corner.

Did you try any parks (eg Terwillegar) after any of those major snowfalls? There's a park in my neighbourhood bordering on the ravine too which is used a lot in the winter too. Used to go tobogganing there way back when. I've only been out snowshoeing in Jasper (really good workout :D )

Very bad year again for outdoor rinks too I'd assume. Never really got out to one this year but I presume that the freeze-melt is not good for the upkeep of those.

I've hiked the river valley a lot this winter as per usual. I like hiking year round. There isn't enough snow cover anywhere to even break out the snowshoes.

didn't get out to the mountains at all this year which is too bad.

yeah and the outdoor skating on lakes has been awful this year, Hawreluk, Rundle, Jackie Parker all bad. Didn't even have any skating during the Silver Skate festival.

its been a strange winter not that I'm complaining. Plus that gas bills have been easy to take this year. Gas at the pumps and gas delivery real cheap.

Happy spring everyone!!! :sarcasm:

Maybe I'll dig the snowshoes back out of the closet. A lot of shoveling lately. Its also what I call glue snow. The type that just sticks on the sidewalk and doesn't want to go anywhere. Friday it was ridiculous. More like paste than snow.

Its funny the things we tend to forget. Same principle as building a snowman. Should have been doing that on Friday. Wonder if I can today?

Spring is the season that really absolutely sucks in Edmonton.

It never seems to get even remotely nice until the last half of May. And sometimes not even then.

Every year come spring I watch the 14 day trend on weather.ca and see the same thing.

Today and next 3 days below average temps. Then the 4th day it will warm up!

3 days later... it looks exactly the same.

I was watching the new Cosmos series on Netflix and the had this global warming trend map of the earth. I can't recall the timelines it was running on. But I watched this thing run and kept an eye on Alberta. And it's like the last place on the planet to see any effects of global warming.

are we really complaining after basically having no snow until like 4 days ago?
March has been excellent so far and an early spring snowstorm almost always occurs...heck, we will probably get an April one as well! but the snow never sticks around

the weather network is predicting 9 by Friday so I'm not sad
