I can't believe someone from Sweden is crapping on this. This event will be great because the IOC and their garbage rules and politics will have nothing to do with this.

At least now if your team makes it to the gold medal game, you don't have to worry about losing your top C for having 1.4X the legal amount of cough syrup in his system.

I can't believe that people are so willing to put up with the IOC and all of their crap.

I want this to be a huge success and then the NHL can tell the IOC to go suck an egg.

I have no problem with Backstrom suspension, I actually think swedens should have been disqualified just like USA and Canada should have been in that tournament, no one of those 3 teams was playing fair. USA and Canada where useing baised refs and sweden was useing drugs. The gold should have gone to Finland.

IOC lets most of its money go back to the nations, and even if it would be cash crabbing and corrupt, it dosent affect the game as it those when NHL gets involved. So I much more rather put up with that some persons get som money under the table rather than have it like this.

I want neutral and serious tournaments, and that will not happen as long as NHL is involved.

First post...

To demonstrate how stupid this idea is, imagine if the 2010 Olympics had have been played under this World Cup format.

Crosby, who scored the OT winner in the Gold Medal Game, would have been ineligible to play for Team Canada under the new World Cup roster rules, as he was only 22 years old. Instead, he would have been forced to play for the Young Guns team. The best player in the world wouldn't have been allowed to play for his National Team. He would have had to play for some gimmick team.

Toews and Doughty too.

That is 3 big pieces of the Gold Medal winning team.

The proposed format will turn the World Cup into a farce.

Actually, I thought it was for those under-23 who didn't MAKE their international team. In other words, Crosby, Toews, and Doughty only would have played for the under-23 team IF they had been CUT from Team Canada (of course, the is all hypothetical since the 2010 Olympics weren't set-up like this -- however, I am just responding to what I believe is a discrepancy in this poster's claim).

All this terrible talk is valid, but the best part of this is the players coming out in unison saying one message, ''We want to go to the Olympics.''

And now reporters coming out and saying the NHL is interested in the Olympics, but want a deal with the IOC, and with the recent 2020 Agenda of the IOC which says,

'' 8. Forge relationships with professional leagues. ''

Amidst words that the IOC wants the BEST playing in every sport at the Olympics...

'' Invest in and forge relationships with professional leagues and structures via the respective International Federations with the aim of:

*Ensuring participation by the best athletes
*Recognising the different nature and constraints of each of the professional leagues
*Adopting the most appropriate collaboration model on an ad- hoc basis in cooperation with each relevant International Federation''

This all could be leading to what every World Hockey fan wants, continued participation in the Olympics.

Team Europe is a terrible idea along with Team YoungStars.

Why not just go with the Top 8 teams in IIHF ranking?

The "rest of Europe" and "Under-23 North American" teams are expected to be a one-time phenomenon.

2020 World Cup will have a qualifying tournament in 2019 apparently.

And

NHL is also considering a Canada vs Rest of the World "Ryder Cup" style event in 2018.

I asked this in another thread but who is going to coach? Presumably US, Canada and Young North Americans will have NHL coaches (is Hockey Canada involved in this at all?) But will the national coaches of Sweden, Finland etc be coaching? And who will be in charge of Team Europe Leftovers?

Also is the NHL insurance going to be in place, what if someone like Tavares or Crosby ends up out for the season because of injury? That will be interesting. Cannot imagine Wang or Mario take that lying down. What if a player not in the NHL injuries himself, again how will compensation and insurance work?

Some key points: Format is just as has been speculated. Hockey Canada and USA Hockey agreed that any U23 player be ineligible for the Canadian and American teams. Plans also in the works to have a Ryder Cup style series between North America and Europe in 2018. Considerations to expand the tournament for 2020, with North American players being allowed to play for weak teams they have have an ancestral link to.

Important quote from Daly:

"I think the World Cup may be influential in terms of how we ultimately decide, because if it's as successful as we hope it'll be and we think it'll be, the Olympics becomes far less important, to the players, even," deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. "If the World Cup's a big deal, best-on-best tournament, why do we need to go to the Olympics?"

They are imbeciles and the tournament needs to fail. Simple as that.

Well, guess I am gonna watch the exhibition team called "Team Europe", although I think many players will boycott it. If we didn´t suck, we would have been participating. Anyway, this format is a joke. Other than that I am cheering for the Czechs.

Man, it's really unfortunate that the tournament will play out this way. The "rest of Europe" team was bad but tolerable. But taking U23s away from their home nations and putting them on a gimmick team together... wow. It's hard to even see the results of the tournament being meaningful when you maim the rosters like that.

Daly (and the people he's speaking for) is out of his mind if he thinks the hockey world will ever consider this a replacement for the Olympics. If anything, it has an uphill battle to gain World Championship level legitimacy.

Awful, awful, awful, terribly awful.

I will not watch a second of this disgrace of a tournament.

Please do not watch this crap.

I hope this tournament fails in the worst possible way.

I don't understand this. These players will not participate in their teams training camps and preseason games? They are going to play in these and risk getting injured for the NHL season?

No NHL regular player is going to go to this crap.

So a one-time tournament with this format and then qualifications in the one after. Should have been a Top8 tournament this time and then qualifications as planned. I will not cheer for anyone, will not watch it, although I do hope the final is Team Europe vs U23 and they play the all the anthems of the participating players.

Wow, I was looking forward to the return of the World Cup, but now it's about as exciting as the NHL all star game. I wonder if we'll see similar no check style hockey for this tournament.

two grid organitations, NHL & OIC don't care the fans feelings.

All they want,we want,is the glory of the olimpic games with the best players,in the best schedule.Simple than that.

Why not share revenues? simple,right?
just grid,everything for myself.

Yeah the fact that all the revenue stays with NHL is another thing why I hate this tournament. What benefit will international hockey have form this?

Daly is an idiot if he thinks anyone will confuse this farce with a best-on-best event, let alone one that is more popular than the Olympics.

This event needs to fail and fail hard.

According to this, the management and coaching of Team Leftovers will be by NHL alumni from those countries

the u23 idea is ridiculous. the allure of these tourneys is that you get to play for or root for your country. would rather see some expanded spengler cup format with the top nhl teams playing against the top khl/european teams. who thought of this new world cup format? probably the people who were in charge of Target Canada.

This sounds worse than Team Europe leftovers...
