Teams that will rise, teams that will fall and teams that will self destruct this playoffs

Team that will rise:
Toronto - Seems to be their year. (Still don't get how this far into the season people think Leafs goaltending is poor.. Literally been their best asset all year)

Team that will fall:
Jets - Simply until Hellebuyck and the rest of the new core show they aren't an easy 5 game out in round 1, I need to see it to believe it.

Team that will self destruct:
Panthers - Simply they have not played good hockey this season and won a lot of games on goaltending I don't think is sustainable. With the injuries and Ekblad being out, I think Tampa's forecheck is too much for them and a "cup favorite" is out in 5 games.
Questionable comments. Florida's goaltending this year has been inconsistent and not the reason why they are where they are. However Bob has been there before and could turn it on in the playoffs. On the other hand the Leafs goaltenders have been really good this year but have never proven themselves in the playoffs. They are more likely to falter.

Rise: Colorado, Vegas, St. Louis, Minnesota, Tampa, Florida, Washington, Ottawa

Fall: Carolina, New Jersey, Montreal, LA, Dallas

Self-Destruct: Winnipeg, Edmonton, Toronto,

Expect Ottawa to be swept. Sens will just be happy to make the players for the first time in a decade. Ullmark being Uhhhmark. He always craps the bed come playoff time.

I meant in the conference. Should be 1-8 with division winners getting 1-2. LA should be lined up with Colorado
I’m talking about conference as well,( maybe wasn’t clear)
The 2 division winners gets ranked 1,2
Winnipeg ranked 1, winning their division
Vegas ranked 2 , winning their division
As should be.

Ahh I see you want the 1-8 back, vs the current hybrid version.

As a Habs fan, I would never put any money on the Leafs to win anything. But I have to admit that the pieces seem to be there this year. Goaltending is finally solid. Tanev has stabilized the defense a lot. Knies emerges as a new scoring threat. And Marner has proven at the 4 nations that he can perform when it matters.

BUT : their biggest enemy is themselves. Fighting against the weight of 55 years of failure, under the spotlight of a high pressure environment like Toronto, is a very difficult challenge to achieve. When every goal against is seen as a step closer to another epic choke, it's hard for the players to keep faith. They play with a gorilla on their back.

And despite them being good enough on paper, my money is on the gorilla.

Worried about the Panthers self-destructing against a hot, hungry, and experienced Tampa Bay.

Tkachuk probably won't be fully healthy, and he'll play with Marchand for the first time.
Verhaeghe has had his worst year as a Cat, and he's historically been a crucial playoff contributor.
Ekblad in a contract year coming off a suspension, who knows what's in his head.
Bennett also in tough contract negotiations and has had a blender of linemates.
Jones has not stepped up to the challenge and hasn't played playoff hockey in years.
The fourth line has been a non-factor all year long, which isn't good.

Montreal is peaking at the right time for a Cinderella run. Blues might have peaked a tad early for that kind of status.

I don't even count Toronto or Edmonton in the self-destruct category because Toronto has never proved it and Edmonton just isn't a good team without McDavid/Draisaitl being healthy.

Probably one of the more wide-open Playoffs as every team in has a major deficiency at the start.

Heh... They're on a 6-game winstreak, but didn't play particularily well in the last 3.

But they're also 28-14-6 since the Carrier deal, which was a complete turnaround. I don't know where that puts them league-wide for that period, but I'll have a guess and say something like "Firmly in Playoff Position".

To give you an idea, the Leafs have been 28-16-2 in that period.

Valid. I think there are differences though. The last time the Jets won a 2nd round playoff game was 2017-2018. The core of that team is gone. Also the manner in which they lose. For example, Leafs lost a hard fought injury filled series in game 7 OT last year. Jets were an easy out in 5 games B2B years.

Also for me, the main question is Hellebuyck because he has been a Vezina level goalie to make the Jets look this good but has also been the guy who has let them down the most when it counts. I think compared to the Leafs two goalies, they have shown in their careers they elevate in the post season.

No one really knows anything with this stuff. Just my opinions.
Scheifele, Hellebuyck, Morrissey, Connor, Ehlers are gone? What did I miss??

Cinderellas:

Blues, Ottawa and Montréal
Blues just found their 3rd gear, and could do some damage, à la 2019
Ottawa is a good physical/forechecking team, with talent, and could cause problems in the East
Habs is a super fast team that will play without any pressure whatsoever

Pumpkins:

Washington, Toronto, Winnipeg
Washington was great this year, but I feel like they'll get simply outskated by a much younger Habs team
Toronto gonna Toronto, this is simply a tradition at this point
Hellebuyck will win the Vezina this year, and it will be most def deserved. I don't see him continue on this roll tho

I want to believe the Oilers are coasting the regular season this year and they just flip a switch come playoff time, but Idk…

Feels like this is a year that Edmonton finally loses to LA.

I have that feeling as well.

I'd rather see EDM win because another big playoff run by McDavid would be enjoyable/cool to see and LA bores the hell out of me, but I feel LA has a good chance to win their series this year.

Do you want to do the same exercise with your Leafs? Because I think some players might not even be born yet the last time this happened

Feels like a year that LA pumps the Oil, if the Oil get past LA, theyre winning the cup just based on playoff experience.

Colorado
Caps
Panthers are all going to be tough outs this year

To the bolded: you mean exactly like Marner and Matthews…?

The leafs goalies have shown they even ate their game? Will has played a whopping 7 games, and the likely started Stolarz has played all of like 1 period of NHL playoff hockey… what the hell has he shown?

Lumping our goalies in with Edmonton's is a joke. From goalies who have played at least 20 games, Stolarz ranks #2 in GSAA/60 and Joe Woll is 16th. Same ranking for sv% at 5v5, Stolarz is actually tied with Helle for #1. Both guys are far better than Skinner AINEC.
I will second that AINEC....not even comparable goalies right now.
