Guys that score 30 goals and can drop the gloves dont exactly grow on trees. We agree I'd love to have those types of players. Hell, I'd take a guy that can score 5-10 goals and drop the gloves so long as he can take a regular NHL shift.

When you say stuff like this, then turn around and endorse players like John Scott, well, thats not exactly the same argument is it?

who is endorsing him?

when was the last time the Rangers drafted a hard nose in your face type of player?

Theyve drafted a few. Trxjw listed them earlier. Its unfortunate that a lot of them didn't develop properly. You keep listing the same 4-5 players that are already entrenched on other teams. Its not easy to find a big guy that can fight and play the game.

Do you think this is the #1 need for the team right now?

I wouldn't mind a player like Reaves or Bollig but they are a dying breed. You will star seeing more guys like Erskine and Thornton (who is way ahead of his time) who can drop the gloves and play the game more than 5 minutes a night.

that is what I always wanted...to win you have to roll 4 lines...but if your are deep enough you can get away with one guy playing 6-8 minutes a game.

I am not saying add muscle fixes all of our issues

My position on this is pretty straight forward. If you want to win a Stanley Cup you have to have the best possible blend of skill, grit and toughness possible.

We can't have uni dimensional goons taking up roster spots. They have to be able to play the game at the NHL level. Toughness, is the ability to subject your opponents to sustained physical punishment, until they begin to become intimidated. Crushing hits, jam up their goal crease, generally get in their face and take them off their game. If and when they push back you have a response. Hopefully it's substantial:

Chara, Lucic, Chris Neil, Simmonds, et. al.

I do not agree with those who say it's just too hard to find this mix. Every year the majority of the top teams find a way. It just has to be a priority....which it is not with the Rangers.

No disrespect to Boogard, but he was a troubled player with a substance abuse issue when we got him. He should have been in counseling/therapy not an NHL locker room. This is a perfect example of the Rangers making stupid, impulsive moves when it comes to shoring up the teams toughness issue long term.

McIlrath is a start but he can't be relied upon to take on teams like Boston all by himself.

the goon is disappearing but we have been saying that for the last 10 years and the league is still littered with them.

my ideal goon is someone like Thornton or Patrick Bordeleau or Brandon Bolig...guys that can play some...if you are going to waste 2 roster spots on Pouliout and Pyatt...why not carry someone of the same value who can at least protect his teammates.

agreed id rather have a guy who can fight and play about 8-11 mins a night without doing anything dumb to hurt the team. its not like Pyatt or Pouliot are doing anything with their ice time....

It's right up there. You said it yourself " a few". This has to be a higher priority.

Your skill players need to reenforced by tougher players. Interview after interview with guys on NHL rosters bears the truth of this out. Better even to have some skill players who are actually pretty tough themselves.

Too many of us maintain that this is too difficult. It absolutely is not. Other teams do it year after year. Drafting where they do, the Rangers need to focus more in this direction and their free agent signings as well

You are perpetuating some sort of myth that our skill players would score more goals if they felt safer on the ice.

I agree it is a need, but getting better skill players that can put the puck in the net sure seems like a bigger need. This correlation that gooning it up will lead to more offensive production is nonsense.

Nashville, over the past few years, has made it a priority to add grit and size to their forward corps. They overpaid slightly for Hendricks and Nystrom and overpaid to get Gaustad as a rental but they are building that way.

What about the Sabres and Hab's...they made it a point to draft bigger guys.

Very true, although the Sabres not too much really. The Habs have made a blatant push to be harder to play against and bigger.

Sabres top 5 picks of last years draft:

1 8 8 BUF
Rasmus Ristolainen D FIN 6' 4" 207 FINLAND TPS
1 16 16 MIN-BUF
Nikita Zadorov D RUS 6' 5" 221 OHL London
2 5 35 CAR-BUF
J.T. Compher L USA 5' 10" 184 USHL USA U-18
2 8 38 BUF
Connor Hurley C USA 6' 1" 174 HIGH-MN Edina High
2 22 52 STL-BUF
Justin Bailey R USA 6' 3" 186 OHL Kitchener

Why are we modelling ourselves after a franchise that hasn't won a playoff round in six seasons, again?

Nashville is the definition of mediocrity. They haven't had a franchise C either. Certainly turning out well for them...

Well, the Rangers have stockpiled players and personnel from Columbus, so modeling their roster after Nashville would be step up from that. :sarcasm:
