Team Toughness 2013

It probably will land right beside the golf balls on the first Green after we get booted out of the playoffs because we were too soft . You need guys like Haley in the game today . He could become a half Clarkson type guy given the ice time and some coaching .
I don't have enough faces or enough palms to express my disapproval of this comment.

Prust done so much by himself last season he had nothing left in the playoffs and Rupper was just too slow to be a factor in most games . The Ottawa series and the Carkner/Konopka/Neil battles completely took every bit of energy out of us so that we were fodder for NJ's 4th line .Haley can skate ...and I would bet that 3 seasons ago nobody would have given Clarkson any chance of scoring 10 goals a season . Who knows what he could do with the guys like Nash throwing pucks at the net if he was given regular crease crashing duty . Nobody knew it with Clarkson .

I find that hard to believe, because he already had two seasons of 10+ goals at that point.

I love when a kid kids a chance and sizes the opportunity.

I don't agree with the demotion one bit. Thought that in a time of complete disarray and desperation Haley injected some life into the lineup.

W/out him...This club is the softest I can remember in decades. That's scary!

Just in the small amt of time he had here he to me clearly showed he was a better player than Pickels.

Can't see the Rangers not adding toughness at the deadline. If Haley was sent back my guess is they are in on Clowe or Ott... maybe even Torrres. Rangers scouted Pho last night. Maloney scouted the Rangers in person. Torres/Pyatt?

i doubt Pyatt gets dealt. they just signed him.. i bet something like Boyle for Torres and Chipchura happens.

I am a fan of teams being able to stick up for themselves and have different routes to change momentum. This team is one dimensional.

This is the softest team I have seen since pre-Orr, and no, I don't want a heavyweight, just some players who can handle the tough side of the game sprinkled around the lineup. Players like Clifford, Tootoo, Glass. Players who can be effective forecheckers and wreak havoc while handling that side of the game.

Pyatt might easily be traded. A 31 year old signed through next year. A 3rd liner who doesn't penalty kill and is not especially gritty when you consider his size. A bit pricey maybe at a 1.55 mil cap hit per year. As much as people rag on Boyle--and Boyle has not played very well this year--he is more valuable than Pyatt if only because he pk's fairly well and does use his size more than Pyatt and he's decent on face-offs. Both players as well might be interesting to other teams who think they are playoff bound and who are looking to add depth. Both are vets with a decent amount of playoff experience. It is what it is--but between the two--even if he is more frustrating to watch Boyle's the more important player to this team.

This. Pyatt has been better offensively but defensively Boyle is better and he can PK and win face offs. IMO they both should go.

Finally a Mod I can get on board with...

This team would have been lucky to win one game in the playoffs last year against the Senators. They would have been beaten up and eaten alive. We have more skill--but are not scoring as much. We have less depth and less toughness. We are a worse team. We can not roll 4 lines with any kind of consistency--meaning momentum is not being passed from one shift to another. It constantly needs to be regained by our top 2 lines. The forecheck is missing--even moreso than the goals and this effects even the top 2 lines ability to do their jobs. Halpern and Powe have 0 goals between them. Boyle has 1. Pyatt has 4 but hasn't scored in weeks and doesn't penalty kill. They don't fight very often and they're not hitting and grinding enough.

A gripe I have with Torts right now is this crap about 'this team cares'. I care as much about individual players feelings right now as he does about keeping fans and beat writers up to date on their injury status. It's about winning and he knows that as well as anyone and if they don't make the playoffs their feelings aren't going to matter an iota.

If we were bringing in more offense then I'd be fine with sending down Haley but Kreider has 2 points in 11 games. For that production I'd rather have someone who can scrap.

Guys I told the board 2 months ago Pyatt sucks and we all would hate him. Oh no dagoon your a idiot only like tough guys .. Guess what he sucks you all hate him lol he is a p word... Get us something anything .. This team is horrible the way it is set up

This team could have avoided a lot of problems if they just hung on to Orr in the first place. He was more than capable in his role. The heavy is a dying breed in today's NHL though, so perhaps it was good foresight by Slats and co. (though not really, considering who they brought in after Orr... RIP Boogey Man).

I think the team and coaching staff are preaching something different, just look at it. Mash comes up and doesn't drop the gloves. Haley comes up and gets in two fights. Those guys are noted brawlers, and toned it down when they got the call up. Is that the coaching staff telling the players not to fight?

Team toughness is a bit of an issue though. Rangers get pushed around like there's no tomorrow after the whistle most nights. Can't clear the crease effectively either.

Plugs like Orr and Mashinter are not the solution. We need guys who can play hockey AND be physical. Those two don't have to completely independent of each other.

if that is the case, i hope the coaching staff is gone.. that would be stupid.... dont stick up for yourself or your teammates :help: Rangers need a pest type player.. heck id take Carcillo if the Hawks were dealing him.. :help:

So with the probable move of StuBick, demotion of Haley, and other moves, the Rangers are officially without a dedicated fighter in the lineup.

I think this is preferable to wasting a roster spot on an Orr or Scott, but I'd like to see a 3rd or 4th liner capable of forechecking like a demon and dropping the gloves as well. Dubinsky did this, Prust did this, and we will miss not just the fighting, but the hardnosed game.

Of player we have who are willing to fight, there's Boyle, who has some of the worst balance in the league, Cally averages 1 or 2 fights a year, but we don't want him fighting because A) shoulder, and B) takes him off the ice for 5 minutes.

Girardi used to drop 'em but hasn't fought in years, and again, takes him off the ice for 5, and while Nash can be big and mean, again, we don't want him fighting.

I'm in favor of making a move for someone like Parros, or a younger idea of Rupp. Alternately, keep away from fighters and go for someone like Clutterbuck, who plays a real tough game, but doesn't need to drop the gloves to get back at someone.

This team is soft. Losing Prust killed NYR.

Every NHL team should have a legit goon in the lineup,4th line 5-6 mins a game won't hurt any club.

Agreed. He brought a ton. 2.5million cap hit is insane though.

It's funny. Prust leaves for Montreal. Montreal excels. Dubinsky and Anisimov get dealt to Columbus. Columbus excels.

I know there's plenty more to a team but those are some pretty good ingredients we lost. Maybe you do in fact do that signing (Prust 2.5 million) with the loss of Anisimov and Dubinsky in the Nash trade. You do it ESPECIALLY IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PLAN B.

I'd say a bombardment of injuries combined with an ineffective Gaborik + useless Richards killed this team, but sure, Prust did it.

Are you calling him a goon? Because Prust is certainly no goon. Far from it. Goons won't help this team either.

CBJ can attribute a lot of their success to the Vezina caliber season that Bob is putting up.

Dubinsky and Anisimov have combined for less goals and points than that "useless floater" Gaborik.
