He won't. In the same way Lucic will not either. Too valuable of a player to lose for 5 minutes with a goon.

This is part of the reason I am so excited to have Clowe, Asham and Dorsett. They can all play the game and can fight. Add McIlrath in a year or so and this team can handle themselves AND play the game well. That has been my hope for a long while now.

What makes you think anything I said was me going against Dorsett?

All I said was they were different players :shakehead

No doubt in my mind that Prust is a superior fighter to Dorsett. Nothing comes without a cost though with Dorsett. Like Prust he'll always have his teammates backs. Haley is another one--better fighter than Dorsett--more on a par with Prust but not as good a hockey player as either Prust or Dorsett. None of these guys will just be out there to drop the gloves though. They can all skate and they can all fit into roles. They're all capable of knocking a puck into the net once in a while. They are not goons per se. They are very rough and tumble hockey players.

We're not going to be good if we don't have some of this element. Skill can only take you so far and if we're talking about skill there's no way we're going to match what Pittsburgh has--so being a lesser team in skill we can't afford to be a lesser team in other areas. Our chance of beating them is through tough defense and grinding, hitting, fighting and opportunistic scoring. Speaking of Pittsburgh's main guys though Crosby, Malkin, Letang are not creampuffs either. All three of them play with an edge--a lot more edge than Gaborik. Not to put Marian down but the kind of game he plays he needs to score--that is how he is a factor.
 
I would resign Clowe for a reasonabl contract...i would be willing to go 5 years @3.5, per...would want it shorter and lower but that is not going to happen when u hear that 2 teams were going on 8 years for him.

Buy out Richards

List of guys I would consider:

Nathan Horton...might be too rich. and injury prone but still only 27-28.

Clarkson, again, might be too rich....would be a nice fit...28..has a solid 5 years left.

Raffi Torres on a shorter deal...3 years max @ 2 per, would even try to go cheaper.

Tyson Bozak...5 years 3 - 3.5 per.

Maxin Lapierre...wouldn't think it would cost a lot for him.

Rob Klinkhammer...wanted him last year..kid has size and i think you might be able to untap something inside of him and he would be cheap.

Bryan Bickell...would make a serious push for him...3 years @ 1.5 per could do it.

Viktor Stalberg - very good player.


Patrick Bordeleau - legit heavy who can skate

On defense:

Ryan O'Byrne - big guy...wouldn't be a bad 6th.

Mark Fristic - same as above.

Matt Pelech - extra dman or depth for Whale.

Davis Drewiske - good 6th, 7th guy.

Goalie

Ray Emery
Anton Khudobin

and one last guy who I have a special place in my heart for...Colton Orr.

I wouldn't buy out Richards until 2014, and then make a serious push for Malkin.
 
I am hoping the Ranger see Haley as a future 4th liner for this team. The guy is a bit of a buzz-saw and would look good for the foreseeable future. Always good to have those types of guys in the locker room and on the ice.
 
If Clowe is retained, then the team has taken a major step in the right direction IMO.

Clowe, Dorsett (who has really got the crazy factor), Asham (who really has more skill than I gave him credit for, even look at his pass to Powe on Wed), and hopefully McIlrath and that is a pretty tough team.

You can tell what Jeff Gorton's philosophy is.

reminds me of this but to a lesser extent. calgary was mad about staals big hit on stajan and calgary kept trying to start trouble. boogard comes onto the ice and they all shut the **** up. :laugh: boogard (RIP) was one of the most intimidating players ever

That's part of the reason I wish we had kept John Scott and avoided Asham
 
Arron Asham is twice the hockey player John Scott is. Probably more.

I like goons. Not going to lie. I think each team should have 1 guy that everyone is afraid of. Scott is a guy that every player does not want to get hit by. I think that comes from me being an agitator in my hockey playing days and seeing the impact the big goons can have on games.

I do like fighting but I find it to be more of an incentive when acquiring a player. That's why I like guys like Ryane Clowe/Dubinsky/Lucic/etc. They drop them and actually contribute outside of purely fighting unlike Scott.

But now I'm taking us off topic myself. :)

I love that Clowe is willing to back up his teammates. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite players on the team (and I knew he would).

But just imagine in a physical and dirty playoff series against the Penguins. Who would you rather your enforcer be when you are up 7-3 at the end of the 3rd, Asham or Scott?

I'd still take Asham in that situation because he can contribute to an effective 4th line.

I was in awe at the Devils 4th line last year. They were quick, tough, and talented. Anchoring John Scott there hampers our chances of creating something like that of our own.

He's going to be gone next year. Haley is our enforcer of the future. I love Haley's game.

And I'd be 101% okay with that. I liked Haley a lot when he was up here, even if he reminds me of Travis Bickle on skates.
