Just watched Utah win 2-1 over SJ but there was a double minor high sticking call late to Utah; SJ wasn’t able to score in regulation but had 3 minutes+ of PP time lost.

I know there’s been threads on this before but not going to find it with the site updating.

I think if a team down and gets a late PP like this they should get the opportunity to run their full PP even if it runs a bit after 60 minutes. Of course if they take a penalty or the shorthanded team scores then it’s game over.

I can see where you are coming from, but it wouldn't make sense overall. Teams would probably try some unscrupulous shit to get a penalty called with only a a couple seconds left and, if they do score, would invalidate the full 60 minute effort to win from the other team. Seems like it would be against the "spirit of the game", so to speak. I can't imagine how controversial something like this would be also if it decided playoff standings, series win, or even a cup win.

Nah. But if a team gets less than half of the PP because, say, there's only 8 seconds left in a 5-2 game, I'd be ok with not counting that as a PP on their team stats unless they score.

I can also agree with that because I could see “late diving” becoming a really stupid issue that puts even more questions on the referee’s and the game itself.

A blatant high stick or egregious dirty play late is what I was thinking of but I could see how it could become more of a problem in the game.

Not a bad idea either. Leading team takes a blatant double minor or a 5 minute major penalty (not a 2 minute minor) and the team down doesn’t get to run half of it when the 60 minutes end they get that chance.

It solves a little bit of the issue, but it still doesn't really solve the possible diving or fishing for penalties plays that could end up with someone really hurt.

It sucks but I don’t see a way to right the wrong you’re describing that doesn’t just create more potential problems.

I do think if there is a “palpably unfair act” as time is running out, like the defending team tackling a player or flipping the goal over to prevent a scoring chance, a penalty shot or even a goal should be awarded, depending on the circumstances. But I’m pretty sure the officials are already empowered to do that.

Powerplays are way less exciting than even-strength hockey. If you're looking to extend time, more powerplay time is not more fun or more competitively interesting.

If San Jose wanted more powerplay time, they should have drawn that penalty sooner.

They had this rule in the 70's and as we speak the California Golden Seals and the Cleveland Barons are still playing a regular season game from the '75 regular season.

Some of the players are now in their late 70's so the quality of the play has dropped off significantly. Every time the game is about to end, Carol Vadnais slashes someone and the Barons go on another Power Play which is currently running at a 0 for 27,345 clip.

Two takeaways:

The Barons need a PP coach bad.
Carol Vadnais is just taking the piss at this stage.
