Team Russia without Kuch.

Panarin-Shipachyov-Buchnevich
Kaprizov-Malkin-Radulov
Ovechkin-Barbashev-Svechnikov
Nichushkin-Namestnikov-Mikheev
Tarasenko

Team Russia without Kuch. And if Kuzya go

Panarin-Shipachyov-Buchnevich
Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Svechnikov
Kaprizov-Malkin-Radulov
Nichushkin-Barbashev-Tarasenko

He's a very recently retired player (played last season) who has absolutely no experience in management.

Canadians have done similar things in the past. They appointed Gretzky as manager of their Olympic team while he was doing a very poor job in Phoenix. Yzerman was appointed shortly after his retirement. The same thing happened here in Slovakia. Bondra and later Satan were the GMs of the Olympic team. I see that Zetterberg and Kronvall are now involved with the Swedish team. Hockey is an old boys' club in almost every country.

Neither of the two rosters seem destined for the medal podium. Too much burden is placed on the shoulders of guys like Oveckin, Malkin and Radulov who are past their prime at ages 35-36 (still producing, but not nearly at the level that they once were).

Given the role Kovalchuk is just fine for the role. He is basically just the guy to talk to the NHLers, have a cup of coffee with them during the time before the tournament and just keep in touch in general and come the tournament one to arrange sccomodation and stuff. He is not going to be doing what a team's GM is doing in a league.

What? Russias potential roster will be stronger than everything we had til back to Salt Lake I think. Vasy alone can win us the tournament. And with Kucherov and Panarin, which will be on this roster as like Malkin, we have the strongst Goalie, okay not great D, but better than everything the last 20 years, and maybe the second or third best offense. Not a bronze medal at least would be a disappointment for sure.

Russian defense is vastly underrated.

Gavrikov and Zub are extremely solid d men but they don’t have much popularity among the league so far.

Provorov, Sergachev, Orlov are proven top 4 d men.
As much as Gavrikov and Zub are underrated Provorov and Sergachev are overrated. So it balances out at the end of the day. It's not terrible but in a best-on-best tournament mediocre.

Provorov is overrated? He is carrying an otherwise mediocre at best D on his back since age 19. Yeah, let's call him overrated for not scoring 50 in 50. He is an absolute workhorse who can play in all situations and he has to for the Flyers. On many other teams he would get way more points and way more recognition playing a comfortable 1D role and not playing 27 minutes a night carrying both PP and PK without replacement. So even on Team Russia he won't have to be that overworked.

Sergachev is underrated AF. People don't realize what playing on the best D in the league means.

Meaning you are in for a big surprise during the Olympics.

Who overrated the Russian defense or Provorov or Sergachev and when?! I have no idea what discussion you want to start here, but the only consensus is actually that Russia's defense is better than in Sochi or Vancouver. And it’s not close. So don’t know what kind of surprise is waiting for Atas.

Is Kuznetsov eligible to play?

Cause god knows how good Malkin is right now & he is old.

Shipachyov? LOLs. Team Russia's Center position is lacking Elite talent right now.

No new Datsyuks, Fedorovs, Malkins or Larionovs.

People who consider them to be or even are happy to have them as #1 and #2 Ds when I'm fairly certain the absolute majority of Tampa fans would consider Sergachyov to be their 4th best D.

Provorov is obviously better but you can look at it the way Nikolishin phrased it: would you consider him to be top-20 D in the NHL? No. And that's your #1 D. So you are probably not in great shape.

Don't know how is Sochi or Vancouver relevant. Yes, the situation is better compared to teams that couldn't ice even full complect of NHL-level Ds. If you are happy with that consensus I don't know what goals or expectations you have for this team. To concede less than 7 against Canada?

Kucherov had a 'lower body procedure' and is expected to be out for 8 to 10 weeks, which puts his return date around Dec 22 - Jan 5.

He should be ready to go in time to shake off some rust before the games, just like Malkin.

With the resurgence of Tarasenko, it is time to revisit the RW depth, I personally was unsure if he should be on the team given his injuries and lack of playing, but now it seems like he’s finally healed and ready to roll.

Current RW depth:
Kucherov
Svechnikov
Tarasenko
Radulov/Dadonov/Gurianov

And for LW
Ovechkin
Panarin
Kaprizov
Buchnevich/Gusev/Barabanov

Centers
Malkin
Kuznetsov*
Shipachyov
Namestnikov/Barbashev /Trenin

Defense
Provorov
Sergachev
Zub
Orlov
Gavrikov
Zaitsev/Kulikov/Zadorov/Romanov

Goalies
Vasilevsky
Shestyorkin
Varlamov/Sorokin/Bobrovsky

I don't think Provorov is overrated. He's what he is, a low end 1D. With someone like Zub they will make a pretty good top pair. Zaitsev always plays great for Team Russia, so him and Gavrikov could be a solid defensive pair. Or they can make Orlov - Gavrikov pair for better balance. Then another pair looks like to be Zaitsev - Sergachev.
