Post-Game Talk: Team is still broken

You can bet on the top 6 to start scoring eventually. But there are some real concerns with this team. Here's what I think they are:

1) The loss of Mcleod. This player isn't without warts (who isn't), but his defensive game, shot suppression, puck movement and zone entries were HUGELY important on this team. Aside from Bouchard-Ekholm, this is not a good puck moving Dcore. Mcdavid, Draisaitl and Mcleod are 3 of the best centres in the league at supporting their Dcores by SKATING the puck out. Hugely important when your bottom 4 dmen can't really move the puck. Henrique offers different strengths, but he is nowhere near Mcleod in shot suppression and helping the Dcore by skating the puck out.

Before Mcleod graduated to being a full time NHL player, the Oilers top 6 would score a bunch, and the bottom 6 would give it all back. Mcleod and Foegele actually gave us a bottom 6 who outchanched and generally outscored teams, which is massive. Its not a coincidence that we were first round and out for years, then when Mcleod started carrying the bottom 6, we started going deeper into the playoffs. A functional bottom 6 is massive for any contender. Lundell for Florida, Cirelli for Tampa, O'Connor for Colorado, etc.

2) We have 1 functional pair, and Nurse and Kulak who are being eaten alive because they are being paired with #7s. This is an issue we all saw coming. How management missed this is beyond me. Having 2 basically non functional pairs also makes it harder for the forwards to score, because who is getting them the puck? Watch Dermott on the 2-2 goal yesterday- what is he doing on the complete wrong side of the ice? How do they gain the zone and score that easily? We need at least 2 NHL dmen and quickly.

The Idea I like the best with the PP, is the potential to flip Bouchard for Ekholm with unit one, to use him again with Nurse and unit too.

Bouchard on unit 1 for :30, Ekholm for :45, then Nurse and Bouchard for the rest.

One nice thing about Ekholm is hes more willing to make a simple play and/or shoot the puck. JSkinner seems to be similar.

Edmonton is dead last now in ES shooting % lol. 4.81%

Teams like Vegas are 13.64%

HD save % is 75.86. Above a few teams

Top teams have 85%-93%

Vancouvers #1 goalie is out for who knows how long and their backups are top 10...

Edmonton still top 3 in HDC For, Corsi, Top 10 in least high danger chances allowed.

Edmonton 2nd last at ES HD shooting % with 9.62%. A few points above WPG (who have a wall in net). Top teams have a 21%-36%

Vegas are the anti-Oilers.

They torch the league every October, only to gradually fizzle out as the season wears on.

It's the exact same deal as last season.

There are definitely some issues that can/should be worked through, but the team is going to start winning a lot of games even if it makes absolutely no changes.

Well maybe I'm biased but watching other games around the league, we don't play with anywhere near the pace or intensity of other teams. It's an eye test but a pretty damning one so far.
Pace was fine yesterday, we are getting burned on stupid plays both offensively and defensively.

What game were you watching? Last 2 games talented speed teams were blowing the doors off beating us with speed and counters. You could watch basically any shift of Necas last night and see how much he was burning us with speed. We couldn't even contain.

If this team had to play against McD....

The Oilers don't come close to matching the speed of top teams like Dallas or Carolina. We're trying to move pucks quickly as answer to matching pace. But what this results in is a lot of miscues and can fall into the trap of playing these teams. The Oilers can have some quick puck movement, but that isn't speed. Its pace of puck.
