Team Finland 2023 U20 WJC roster talk

Its the same thing every year. See you in the final guys. 🙂
Any of you guys have an idea of what Tomi Lämsä's coaching style is like? Is it akin to that of Pennanen or perhaps a bit more offensively oriented? Just watched an interview with Kokko and from his comments I gather the team is built as a fast, counter-attack team built with smaller Dmen but quick moving the puck. Kind of reminds me of the u18 team that was coached by Petri Karjalainen in 2021 (makes sense, a lot of the same players between that roster and this one).

Anyone know if Usa pretournament game 20th broadcast/streamed anywhere... quick search didnt see NHL network, TSN or finnish channels broadcasting it.
Maybe check these albeit not free but otherwise should be broadcasted and shown on TSN indeed or some stream USA vs. LAT (Preliminary) | 2022 World Junior A Challenge

or check HockeyTV

Watching U20 practice games this season, they definitely seem to play pretty fast. Most impressive was the 6-1 victory of Sweden. Sweden looked really slow compared to Finland in that game. Of course, practice games are practice games, so we'll see how they do when real games start.

With Heimosalmi, Vilen, Malinen, Salin, Suomi, there's definitely dmen with good mobility on the backend.

I watched that game. Was impressed. A lot of players looked really good including Kalle Väisänen. But true, practice games don't mean much, unfortunately. I remember in 2012-2013 Fin beat US and CAN in the pre-tournie games and had a decent roster but proceeded to head towards the relegation round a short while later.

Questionable goalies to say the least.

Questionable D, overall that is. Yeah Kiviharju is a huge talent but he's three years younger.
Suomi and Malinen are really mobile but still, their point production has never been that impressive.
Heimosalmi should be good but I'm not as sure as when D's like Heinola and Niemelä played a couple of years ago, or why not even mention Jokiharju, Vaakanainen and Laaksonen as well.
Do they have the same confidence when Canada or the US come hunting for the puck with high forechecking? Not so sure.
Vilén with a good season, but I'll wait and see what he can perform at this level.

Really unimpressive centers on paper. Like really unimpressive, not contender level at all. Neither is the depth there, nor that 1-2 punch with some high end skill or IQ that can make the difference.
I mean is Kapanen our first? Who will be the second one? Who will also get some PP-time? It doesn't feel certain and that's a huge disadvantage already.

Some good wingers but not that much better than we've had these last ten years at u20 level?
Huuhtanen, Kemell, Nyman, Koivunen, Hämeenaho and Lambert could be good, but not better than 18/19 perhaps? A roster where we had lot better D's, centers and a better goalie.
Has Väisänen got any better? Has Koivunen got any better? Has Kemell got any better? What about Lambert?
I mean who is our best prospect? 7th rounder Huuhtanen? Or is it Nyman or Hämeenaho? It should be Kemell or Koivunen?
These are valid questions because two out of these three players should and could be leaders in this team, especially Kemell. But I feel like both Koivunens and Kemells development has been a bit of a disappointment for me so far. Yeah they are young, but I have high expectations for a talent like Kemell and I'm not sure he is a better player today than 12-18 months ago.
The point is, there are a lot of question marks and even if they aren't necessarily bigger, there's plenty of them.
I hope they will shout my mouth and other doubters.

This is the first time I really feel we aren't the biggest contenders, more like good outsiders. But again, I will be happy to admit I was wrong later on.
Take a look at Czechia, better D's, Kulich and Sale. I don't believe we are that much better to be honest. The US are usually quite stacked at this level. Canada...
Are we better than Slovakia this year?

Maybe this gives you perspective of that why i'm not high with Finland's goaltending and defence.
Those November's pre tournament games and 2 practise games vs Canada and USA
won't matter jack-shit 26.12.2022 when puck drops Finland vs Switzerland game.

Lämsä as a coach is also huge questionmark
and he's nobody coach until he proves himself in these U20 WJC's

I mean fair enough, I'll still hope we do well. Nothing matters until the actual tournament starts.

I like it. If this works it will strengthen our team team by quite a lot.

Vilen resting? Or did they decide he was too big and sent him home lol.
They realized his shot is too powerful and danger to everyone else.

Yeah great job on the stream this time allready off to a better tourney quality wise than the last one, also crazy nice shift by huuhtanen

not happy with Lambert... every rush ends up in offensive zone turnover and now he takes penalty

Actually, even if we've seen very few shifts so far, I do think Kaskimäki has been just as good or better than both Lambert and Kemell.
Sometimes I wonder if JYP was a shit organization to further develop these big talents...

I like Rönnis skating ability considering his size, also seems to work hard.

So far, Huuhtanen has surpassed a lot of earlier "Big" names.

Väisänen too passive there.
Before that the PK looked decent.

Again, Väisänen, Lambert, Kemell, Koivunen. Have any of these talents got better these last 18 months?
Malinen was mobile 2 years ago as well, I thought he could become something quite good but so far he seems to be okay but not that much above average.
