WC: Team Finland 2022 roster talk

Ugh, who wants Ristolainen? Guy is absolutely terrible and will surely mail it in playing for Team Finland anyway. I'd much rather have a Liiga player who plays by the book than Ristolainen egoing it up with his terrible plays. If Ristolainen comes I'm sure he'll get way too much ice time and responsibility and it'll be a complete disaster.

I hope Juhani Tyrväinen gets a spot. He is a monster. He was doing great job in WC 2019 and he is still as good.

from 2.16 to 3.00. Just look how hard body he has. Him, Antilla and Pakarinen would be hell to play against.

He has a brother who plays in Liiga, Antti. Good player?

Getting Laine and Hintz would be amazing. Jokiharju is also a top 2 dman in Buffalo right now along with Dahlin. Armia despite having a weaker season is reliable defensively and has some goal scoring abilities.

Laine's contract situation however is a big question mark. Hoping Jarmo will give him the deal before the may.

-Hatakka & Thomson. Both are far from a NHL breakthrough. I want these two to get more NHL or international level experience before they join the WHC. They can come and try on the WHC camp if there's enough time for them to make a case of themselves for Jalonen.

Otherwise I agree with what you say but have you seen Thomson play? Dude has been very mature and steady in the NHL games I have seen and I would say he's quite close to NHL breakthrough. Good positioning, uses his body when needed and good at making the first pass and has even gotten PP time. I would rely on him more than on Ristolainen to be honest. I expect him to be at the camp the very least.

Would Thomson accept a camp invite? Even if he's a new NHLer it still quite a bit travel etc, and might not feel worth it if he doesn't make it. But then again, he is no Ristolainen.

A fringe NHLer accepting a camp invite with no guarantees of anything would be nothing unheard of.

In fact, I'd expect most of the players I listed to make the team that route. They're all potential candidates, sure, but only four of them are established enough that they should be given guarantees.

If Thomson has a chance to represent his country in a home tournament, I don't think a bit of travel will bother him. He probably wants to spend some time in Finland anyway.

I've mostly seen stats of him and some highlights. I know that he's good offensively but I'm questioning the other part, his defense. In +/- he's managed to get -8 in 16 games. The team is Ottawa and many players are on negative but per game that is a high number of minuses. That makes me think that he's not ready yet. In AHL his stat line looks nice but that's indeed AHL and not NHL. Maybe he deserves a spot at the camp though as you said.

He'd probably love to play at Tampere as well. The place where he last played in Liiga.

Jalonen says that a majority of the players on the first camp roster are returnees from the olympic team. So it sounds like those who fled the KHL are on board en masse and willing to play through the entire month-long preliminary period. Hats off.

The players are willing to do some sacrifices to get that rare opportunity to play in a home tournament I guess.

There are 4 games total against against Denmark & Norway. 2 of those games are played in Finland. So it's not that bad.

If the camp is still at Vierumäki = Heinola, Heinola is kind of in a good place on the map. The location is close to many places in Finland. Not too far for many of the players to travel home once in a while or their families can come over as well. Then at the end of the camp two EHT tournaments at Sweden and Czech. Those are held in back to back weekends if I read right and at least one of the EHT games is played in Finland against Switzerland.

I expect that some of our Olympic team players who are on the camp will look a lot worse than in the Olympics. It will be interesting to see if that would affect on Jalonen's selections. He says that he would select the players who play the best during the moment when he makes the selections, but I'm not sure if that is 100% true. It will be interesting for sure to see what happens with that.

That is very impressive first camp roster. Glad to see so many recent Olympics winners. A lot of those guys are almost guaranteed to make the final team. No need to worry about KHL players being rusty in the tournament.

Yep, that's pretty darn stacked, as far as initial camp rosters go. I'm counting at least 12 names that are basically guaranteed to make the final team. It's an unusually high number at this stage. (Although, a fair number of first camp attendants ended up making the 2019 and 2021 squads, too - though back then there was no way of telling beforehand.) Of the big name players with no club team duties, the sole missing one is Filppula. But I guess it's still possible he'll join later after taking some time off to be with family.

It also more or less covers the biggest question marks we had. With Olkinuora in, we've no need for a high-profile goalie, though I can think of one or two names who might be upgrades if available and willing to join. And with Manninen, Aaltonen, Nättinen and Björninen in, there's zero concerns down the middle. Heck, getting some high profile NHL name in the vein of Hintz or MiG on top of those would almost be an embarrassment of riches.

Speaking of which, let's not forget the old adage "success breeds success". Other high-profile names who might debate joining could be more ready to say yes, when they get to join an already stacked squad instead of a relatively no-name one where they'd be the lone star expected to carry the team.

All in all, that's a sterling start. Then again, should we even be surprised? What player would NOT like the combination of home ice + Jalonen behind the bench?

As one last note, we may end up having a crazy amount of players belonging to a specific niche at our disposal - puck-moving righty d-men. This squad already features Vatanen, Hietanen and Kaski. Then there are Jokiharju, Ristolainen and Thomson as speculated overseas additions. And if we look at Euro-based names not featured here, there's Kemiläinen and Honka. Pokka is also a righty, but he's profiled himself as more of a DD lately. There are bound to be some high-profile cuts in that department.

Filppula joins the team a bit later Tässä ovat Leijonat ensimmäiseen MM-leiritykseen – erittäin nimekäs pelaajalista

That's a stacked team already and I did not expect to see Manninen line trio. I thought that it's under 50% chance that they will come. We will have a monster team in the WHC. Even Vatanen is there already. Defensive end needs most improvements. It should be good if Jokiharju, Lehtonen and Ohtamaa are coming. Things look good but sadly I expect covid to do some harm on the selections around the time they are announced.

I feel that Honka won't make it and my feeling about Thomson is that he could be an alternate max because more defenders are still about to join the team. He most likely wouldn't make the active line up. He could be one of those place holder guys while checking if for example Dallas would be out after 1st round of the playoffs.
