Is there a reason china needs to send a hockey team to the Olympics? Does a host nation have to have every sport participation?

They need to be within top something at the world ranking, which they were not. However, China was given an exception to this as (I don't know if this is the official version) they seemed to be able to ice a good enough team for the tournament with the future naturalization of players

Just listening to journalist Shevchenko (time 21:20) speaking that G Lazushin will play for China, getting the citizenship. I have no idea if it is another joke by the journalist, believe @cska78 can interpret his words better.
I will listen to him, he jokes a lot; however, he did say at some point, that many players left the team, as a condition was to get a Chinese passport.

The IIHF wants to promote hockey in China, so they waived some of the qualification requirements.

Maybe PRC can use their face recognition technology and replace all the Canadian faces with selected Han Chinese models in real-time.

You jest but it really seems like all this team needs from PRC's perspective is enough players to have a certain ethnic feature. A guy who looks like Jason Robertson would be good enough for them. And even then that just needs to be a few players to demonstrate it is the "Chinese" team, the rest could look like anyone.

D Andong Song & F Cliff Pu & others should join the Kunlun Red Star soon, all having a right to play for Chinese NT at Olympics.

Pu would be a good addition but Song sadly isn't even good enough to play for Team China.

Yeah Song is just bad, hasn't been able to get even a single game in NCAA. I think it's pretty clear he was drafted as a mixture of publicity stunt and a favor from Charles Wang to Song's family.

Song was the captain of China's U18 team, if he relocates to China he will be a part of their team. Not necessarily for the Olympics, but I doubt that they withdraw from hockey altogether afterwards.

Question for people who know more about Chinese hockey than I do:

Who is the best non-Kunlun affiliated Chinese player, who has a chance to make this team?

I don't think anyone not affiliated with Kunlun has any chance of making the team. But I suppose there are players that aren't a part of the active KRS roster at the moment that could still be included. For example Zehao Sun if the goalie eligibility situation for some reason couldn't be resolved in their favor.

There really aren't many Chinese players who aren't affiliated with Kunlun in some way, either with the KHL team, either of the VHL teams, MHL, or even the short lived China Golden Dragon in Czech3. It's not like there's many players with Chinese citizenship playing in other leagues. Even the Asian League doesn't currently have a single Chinese player.

The one guy I'll say who might have an outside shot is Peter Zhong. Has a bit of history playing for China, and has played a few NCAA games with Arizona State the past couple years

Another who has played in the Kunlun system in the past is Julius Zhang. Put up some crazy numbers in U20 D3 for China, and is apparently signed in the Finnish 3rd league for this year

I imagine like everything involved in this sham of a team there will be plenty of exceptions to hand around. Not the first nor the last time an international sporting event allows all kinds of national protocols to be broken, and not just for China.

Few athletes with citizenships in freer countries would give it up to play for China to get embarrassed so the Chinese federation needs to be a bit conciliatory.

I'm thinking if they can actually bring almost the entire KHL team over plus a few reinforcements, what would be a comparable international team now? Like a Kazakhstan/Belarus/France level? Or an Italy/Austria/Slovenia level?

hopefully those khlers will keep playing for team china even after olympics. would be nice to have a good national team from asia in world championship

Every host country can send a team if they have a team.
South Korea did so too.

South Korea was a lot closer to being competitive though. They actually made the top level World Championship in 2018 purely on their own merit, and have been mostly in D1A other than that year. China has spent the last few years in D2A, two divisions lower

@iginlafan77

I know, i wanted to point out that its normal that the host team plays with the others.

Of course they will get f***ed without lube.
Look at the World cup of Football. Qatar will also play in it.

But i get why its bad, because a lot of teams that would be much better cannot participate.
Thats not cool.

Honestly, I don't believe that they'll get completely destroyed, provided they do bring essentially the Kunlun team.
Yes, the team of Chinese born players that has represented them at world championships would get absolutely routed.
But if they've got everyone from Kunlun, I think they're better on paper than South Korea was. And I think they could be potentially competitive with D1A teams with that roster.
