WC: Team Canada 2025

Apparently Kyle Dubas will be sending out the invites this April/May.

Not great,,,but more interested on who he selects as the coach,

I saw that too. I'd be open to Todd MacLellan coaching the team. Coached the dominant 2015 team and would probably be comfortable doing what Hockey Canada requested with a team with hopefully some Olympic hopefuls.

The playoff picture is getting muddled.
Somebody floated the idea that Doughty is interested in a shot at the "infamous" "triple gold club. LOL. I don't for a second believe that he is, but for the sake of argument Edmonton drops LA in the opening rd. (not a guarentee) and Doughty is in. I'd sweeten the pot and offer him the C. Bring Byfield, Clarke and Kuemper with you.
Horvat accepts and brings his cousin Konecny with him. Travis wants to secure his spot going to Italy next year.

MTL, OTT and SLB. Hockey Canada won't wait around. They will name players and then run of spots when better players become available.

Waiting on 7-8 players to finish Rd. 1 is a bit much...but

I'd like to see Holloway, Neighbours get in some high intensity playoff action and then agree to extend their season in a Team Canada sweater. I'd drop Lafreniere for either Holloway or Neighbours.

That's a terrific team.

Montreal lost AGAIN. Someone in their forum said that Suzuki is out of gas after carrying the team for the entire season - and that is why the team has dropped 5 straight. That does not bode well for Suzuki playing at the World Championships.

Suzuki won't play for Team Canada until Coach Cooper is gone. Quick napkin maths, for the 4 nations there is 7 forwards worse than Suzuki. Konechni, Cirelli, Stone, Marchand , Stone, Jarvis,Bennett, Hagel. Coach Cooper doesn't like him because he played Montreal in the finals. Yes he could use the rest, but he could still play. Coach St-Louis is trying to double shift him when he can.

I doubt Cooper and the 2021 Finals has much to do with it. Although, I do think Hockey Canada using the WC against him is childish. Also, The players you listed were there for different reasons.

Stone: Was seen as one of Canada’s best and more established wingers prior to 4-Nations. His hot start and leadership abilities pretty much made him a lock. I HIGHLY doubt he’s there in 2026.

Marchand: A pick that Hockey Canada wanted to take back after initially naming him in the first 6. Unfortunately, he was already locked in.

Hagel: Quite easily Canada’s best natural LW. He’s been a top 10 ES point scorer for 2 seasons now and is one of the game’s best forecheckers. There was no way he was getting left off, especially if Cooper was there.

That leaves Jarvis, Bennett, Cirelli and Konecny. I will admit that Suzuki should have made it over a couple of those players. However, all these players were there for different reasons. Suzuki isn’t as good of a shutdown center as Cirelli or as good of a forechecker as Konecny. He doesn’t provide size and agitation like Bennett.

So, Suzuki was the odd man out. He has a strong chance to make 2026 as Canada likely shifts to taking more well-rounded players in their bottom-6 rather than purely focusing on roles.

Crosby doesn’t owe Hockey Canada anything but I wonder if he’s got any interest in extending his season? Pretty tough to sit out the spring entirely for the third straight year, especially since it might be extended to a fourth (sorry Penguin fans but your well is dry). Has anyone seen a reporter ask him about his interest in going to Stockholm?

I'd bet that Canada goes with Tocchet as coach, once Vancouver is officially eliminated, as he was on the four nations staff and probably ends up at the Olympics. Which would be good as it gives players extra incentive to go over and show something this year.

If Crosby is really committed to being a one-team player for his entire career, he must recognize that that means he may never play another playoff hockey game ever again.

This upcoming WC, the Olympics, and the following WC might be the last meaningful games he ever can play. The 4 nations probably got the competitive juices flowing again so I wouldn't be shocked if he goes this spring.

Crosby is still excellent, at this moment he's still near top ten in NHL scoring. At this point I'd rather him not bother with this tournament and just focus on the 2026 Olympics. There isn't much value in the iihf world championship and I'd rather him take as much time to prepare for 2026 given his age, not that I think playing at this event would cause massive wear and tear. Since Pittsburgh probably won't be playing significant games any time soon anyway, I'd hope (but not expect) him to do a 2001-2002 Lemieux, where he basically focused on the 2002 Olympics at his main goal and played accordingly.

An exception would be if you get Celebrini and Bedard here, or a significant number of high end young players, at which point it would be valuable to get Crosby the mentor involved. I'll be shocked if he goes but if he does, then good for him.

I think Colin Shirley should have a spot. You need proven winners and warriors on the team.

I'd wait until his WJC eligibility runs out. Don't want to over-crowd his season and risk losing the magic.

It's inside joke. It goes back to the 2016 WJHC Team Canada when some HF "expert" (can't remember who) suggested Colin Shirley as a Team Canada lock. or should be a lock.

Every year since it's no Team Canada roster is complete without Colin Shirley. @JackSlater probley remembers the hf "expert" Jack has a better memory than do I for these things.

The guy changed his username at one point but you could tell it was him because he'd lose his shit whenever Shirley was mentioned even years later. He was convinced that Shirley was making the WJC team because he had four points in a super series game against Russia.

Could be better. if the right teams get bounced and the right players properly motivated with a coaching staff that knows what the hell it is doing...sure. A Gold Medal contender.
Better than that. A Gold Medal favourite.

Suzuki won't be there so I'd bump up Horvat, put Cozens on the 2nd line and Hayton becomes the 4th line center - keeping Celebrini and Toffoli together on line 3. Still a TERRIFIC team.

Other than routinely turning down invites to play at the WHC...what's his reason this year with an Olympic spot up for grabs?

Don't say playoffs. 1st. round will be concluded by the time the team leaves for Europe. And Team Canada does tend to add a player or three from teams being bounced opening rd.

Yes, upsets happen. sure. but probabililty is that MTL will be out rather quickly. .

I was going to say "Playoffs" - but you've already, proactively, shut that excuse down. :)

Today is April 7th, and we still don't know a single last name. Apparently, this time they decided not to bother anyone until the end of the regular part of the championship.

Lots of potential here.

Would love to see Bedard go, but I’m not sure what he’s got in the tank, might be a good opportunity for him to rest.

Celebrini, Fantili, Konecny, Horvat, Zelweger, McTavish, Dobson, Lafreniere has a lot to prove, Tiffoli is a gamer, McCann, Stephenson, Wright, Dunn would be a big get, Guenther, Hayton, Power, Byram, Quinn, Benson, Weegar, Zary, Johnson.

Lots of potential for this team.
