WC: TEAM CANADA 2023

Like a lot of you, I've been watching this thing for eons. IMHO, this is the weakest "On paper" team we've ever sent. I will say, sometimes strong "on paper" teams fizzle out early, all depends on how well the team develops and adjusts. Still, not too optimistic about this group.

Always wonder, how many no thanks they got, and if they considered Europe based players. Considering the roster...I hope they did. Like somebody posted....who..who???

Anyway, thanks to the guys who did say yes, and go get it down boys!

So long as there is no best-on-best tournament on the calendar to provide a carrot for star players to join the WC team, we will struggle to attract said star players. Regardless, full credit should be given to those who do go over and represent Canada.

Never judge a roster on paper. We’ve had Canadian teams that looked like a fantasy draft of 2nd and 3rd liners win the whole thing. It’s going to be about quick adjustments game to game and the players executing and playing to their potential

I remember good ol Anson Carter poking in an OT goal to win gold against Sweden

This may be a factor in how crappy Canada's roster is this year. Or it may not, who knows. There has been discussion about it though.

In memo, NHLPA outlines concerns with Hockey Canada screening

Key points -

Hockey Canada has a new screening process stemming from the allegations against some players form the 2018 WJC team.

The NHLPA general counsel told agents late last month about their “serious concerns” with Hockey Canada’s new approach.

Players being considered for Hockey Canada’s roster at the 2023 World Hockey Championship were required to complete certain forms and authorize a criminal records check and social media screening. The memo reads, in part:

“The screening process is extremely broad and includes the required disclosure of anything that could negatively impact Hockey Canada’s reputation. We asked Hockey Canada to clarify how players were to respond to this question, but they were unable to provide any useful guidance.”

The broadness of that question is an issue for the NHLPA. The memo also states: “Given the breadth of the screening and the lack of guidance, we believe it will be impossible for players to fully understand their obligations. This is particularly troubling given that Hockey Canada may impose sanctions for a player’s failure to disclose the requested information.”

Hockey Canada denies that it is an issue or that it deterred anyone from playing. Laughton was interviewed for this story and said that it wasn't a big deal and he gets why they added that process.

Overall I'd say that if the NHLPA and agents are against it then it will only hurt participation of Canadian players to some degree, probably not drastically. Mainly it gives the agents extra material if they want to counsel their players against playing. A nice consequence of bringing political solutions where they were not needed, in this case to deal with unproven allegations that have yet to yield even a charge.

Are they really much worse than the roster Canada sent in 2021? Lotsa guys on that roster I couldn't pick out of a lineup.

Any thoughts on how Fantilli has played so far?

I just saw that TSN has a feature on Lucic already. Also just saw that Toffoli is the captain.

Pretty rough game.

PP looked terrible, no idea why they have all 4 right shots on one unit and 4 left shots on the second.

Yes, of course hard to get the boys up for this sort of game...but. PP as awful, 5 on 5 there was limited flow, passing was just in the neighbourhood. Levi was tested far more than he should have been. SVK will be more of a test.

Winning the preliminary round is not necessary, but Canada doesn't play Czech until May 23. That's a long time to wait for the best test we'll get until the playoffs.

USA has a good team, was impressed with their team speed and mobile D.

^no chance, unfortunately.

guessing they'll wait until the last series concludes and see if they can pick up a final piece or two.

Slovakia will be a test. Don't let the roster fool you.
