well then, 4th line : Hyman - Kadri - Wilson

"There’s going to be bodychecking, there’s going to be tight, defensive play. There’s going to be things that you want to make sure you have players that can close games out, that can kill penalties, that can do all the things that make you successful."

I don't think Kadri makes it but I wouldn't be surprised if some combination of Wilson, Kyrou, and Hyman do.

If they’re going to take Hyman as a 13th forward I would much rather have Mangiapane as that type of player; at this point the only players I could see Wilson and Kyrou taking spots from are Barzal and Marner, and those would be, well….. interesting selections to say the least

For you who would leave Toews out of the team, what do you think he doesn't have / what he needs more? Like does he take too much penalties, is he unreliable, isn't he able to handle enough ice time, or what is it?

It's a few things for me, mainly that there might just be better options. We can assume that Theodore makes it as Canada's best left side puck mover. I also expect that Pelech makes it as the main shutdown defenceman. Then it pretty much comes down to how you like Toews compered to Canada's other left side defencemen, plus Pietrangelo if he gets shifted over. It's hard to say that Toews is definitely better than each of Chabot/Nurse/Rielly/Chychrun/Weegar. He has a better team situation than some of them do, which can make it difficult to assess. He doesn't have a lot of international experience, which is a negative. I'm also not sure how he would do against the fastest teams. It helps that he plays with Makar, but he needs to be able to justify his own play as an individual. It also helps that he should be familiar with how Trotz does things, provided that Trotz is in charge of the defencemen.

Basically I think that he should still be in the conversation. When I watch Colorado he never really impresses me but that isn't the be all and end all. I would guess that all he can do to garner a selection is play really good hockey for the next several weeks.

I’m in agreement with everything said here. For the people who are leaving mangiapane off the roster need to realize, coming off an mvp performance at the worlds (even if devowed of talent) and leading to Canada to gold in a tournament that is typically dominated by European countries is a huge feather in his cap. The hot start just enhances his recognition. Make no bones about it, when you you play for Canada at the worlds, and are not a typical lock for an upcoming best on best tournament like the olympics, it’s almost a prequisite. We will see what the next month or two entails, but as of now, mang makes the roster. But things can change.

Byram, Batherson, Kadri and maybe Thomas/RNH would be players left off the long list that could have gotten some attention

I think there's a good chance a few of them were on. Wouldn't shock me if RNH was on the list at all, and Batherson, Byram, and Thomas are young enough I can see them having been listed in case of a breakout. I'd guess Nick Suzuki, maybe Quinton Byfield, Alexis Lefrenniere, Jordan Kyrou, Anthony Cirelli, etc would be other of that sort of candidate.

Someone might want to take a crack at a non-NHLer roster.

Jake Virtanen anyone?

If the NHL pulls out by January 10, then I really don't care about the tournament and will just skip it just like 2018. I wish my Canadian countrymen plying their trade in Europe well, and I'm sure they'll do fine.

Anyway...with Barzal and Scheifele both playing something not remotely close to Olympic A Team expectations...welcome back Tavares and Marner.
Price still nowhere to be found.
Hopefully Point and MacKinnon will be back sooner rather than later. or else this NHL Olympic roster is going to start looking more like a IIHF WHC roster.

If Barzal is to cede to anyone I think it will be Kyrou, similar type player and an absolute burner who has had a very good season so far

I'm curious to see what Barzal and Chabot would look like on fully functional teams this year. Not sure that I'd put them on the team at the moment but they would both remain under consideration for me.

Chabot I think would look more competent if he were playing on say the Bruins; He wouldn’t have to play 28 mins a night and would have higher zone exit and zone entry success rates. Barzal on the other hand has been the architect of his own downfall in my opinion (limited viewings I admit), poor faceoff percentage, poor defensive zone recognition and has become somewhat perimeter in the attacking zone

This would be my team right now:

Huberdeau - McDavid - Stone
Stamkos - MacKinnon - Point
Marchand - Crosby - Bergeron
Mangiapane - O’Rielly - Wilson
Marner

Toews - Makar
Theadore - Pietrangelo
Pelech - Ekblad
Doughty

Price
Binnington
Jarry

I’m still happy running McDavid, MacKinnon, and Crosby down the middle. That will be unmatched. Especially with arguably the leagues best defensive centre at 4C. My 4th line is a little bit different. The idea is that you have a pure playmaker in ROR, with a goal scorer in Mangiapane and a power forward in Wilson. I reserve judgement to dump Mangiapane if his hot streak comes to an end.

On defence, Toews is earning that spot next to Makar through his own play, not just familiarity. He can play PK1, or PK2 as well. I went back and forth between a few guys on the 3rd paring LHD spot, but ultimately went with the pure defensive specialist in Pelech. If Doughty comes back healthy and rolling I think he’s the perfect 7D. All kinds of international and playoff experience to drop into the lineup if injuries crop up.

Has there ever been a time when three defenseman from the same team made Canada? Really hard to ignore Toews and Byram this year

Neither of them I think will make it. Theodore, Pietrangelo, Doughty, Ekblad, Hamilton and Makar are IMO locks, so that leave two spots up for grab. Probably Pelech will take one of them. No way both Toews and Byram make the Olympic team.

Also Jarry is not on 6 make shortlist for goalies, he won't make Olympic team.

I agree about Chabot. I really wouldn't be surprised to see him show up, play 20 minutes per game in a structured environment and thrive. Not sure what to make of Barzal. He's still a machine in transition but the team is bad right now. I'd still be comfortable with him in a depth spot at this point, though I'm not expecting it.

Montreal put Savard, Robinson, and Lapointe on the loaded 1976 Canada Cup team. The Oilers put four defencemen (Coffey, Lowe, Huddy, Gregg) on the 1984 Canada Cup team but only one of them deserved it, arguably two I guess. I would be shocked if Byram is even eligible to be picked for this team due to the long list. I wouldn't trust him at this level at the moment either.

With the season that he has been having and the element that he would bring to a finesse team; I don’t see how Tom Wilson doesn’t make the roster other than the fact that he has a bad disciplinary history. The guy can play in every situation effectively. The way that he skates with the puck reminds me of Eric Lindros at times.

Who does he replace for you

Discipline is the exact reason he wont make it. No one on the Canadian roster will hit like him but they have enough guys who arent soft for COlympic hockey. This isnt the world juniors where the young Europeans will be scared of a guy like that. Canadas do everything/checking/grinder line this year is gonna be Bergeron Crosby Marchand with players like Mark Stone, Courturier or O'Reilly.. Wilson isnt good enough to make it over guys like that even if he was disciplined

The problem is IIHF officiating and rules are a lot stricter than the NHL when it comes to hits to the head, as well as charging type hits. Wilson has a penchant to do both of those regularly, which the NHL refs don't pay much attention to, but the IIHF refs will be dishing out 2s and 5s for constantly.

Guys, Jarry is already off the team. Also, I'm very fascinated as to why Dubois is on so many teams. He isn't even the best Canadian forward on Winnipeg. From the looks of things, basically every team has Crosby, McDavid, Bergeron, Marchand, MacKinnon, O'Reilly, Couturier, Point, Stamkos, Huberdeau, Stone, and Marner. Last two spots seem to be mostly debates between Tavares, Barzal, Scheifele, and Dubois. Personally, I have Tavares a bit above Barzal and Scheifele and Dubois trailing them all by a good bit.

Granted, Canada always does some weird stuff, and they've basically said they're going to. But . So, sure, they'll take Mangiapane and Wilson and Hyman or something.

This is the worst take in the history of sports.

Have you even watched him play this year? Dubois is the best forward on this team right now bar none, with Connor being a close 2nd. Scheifele, Ehlers, Wheeler and the rest of the offensive depth have fallen off a cliff. I wouldn't put Scheifele over Dubois on Team Canada at this point, his play is god awful this year.

I'd be pretty shocked to see Canada go with a guy like Dubois over Tavares. JT for one has a lot more pedigree for Canada, but even aside from that he is currently the leading scorer and Captain of a team near the top of the standings.

Yeah taveras is a winner, 1 playoff round win in 12 years, once he left NYI they went to back to back conference finals. Taveras is the opposite of winning, the anti Crosby.
