Not that it matters because Tampa isn't going be picking top 10 this summer but the 2025 1st that the Preds own was also top 10 protected. I would assume that protection is voided by trading the 2026 and 2027 1sts, correct?

1st+2nd for two playoff runs with Bjorkstrand is not an overpayment. Bjorkstrand is a legit 2nd line scorer who doesn't hurt you defensively and the picks are likely to be very low with minimal odds of turning into anything useful at the NHL level.

1st+Eyssimont for Gourde is a bit rich just because it seemed like he'd fallen off a bit this year even before the injury but it's a sellers' market especially for centers.

Seattle remains directionless. How do you make full on rebuilding moves like this 9 months after signing Stephenson and Montour to those contracts? They need to go all the way and move out McCann, Schwartz, Oleksiak, etc. now too.

Every club was capped out. You have to remember summer 2022 - after the signings, every team that was willing to spend was hard up against the cap, except for Seattle.

Oh I remember, I just don't see the hype around this player. These are the types of players who you can get for $5-6m every July 1st, not the type of players you give up top prospects for. The fact that he's now been traded twice (once for a 3rd+4th, and now for a late 1st) proves that.

Could be one of those quid pro quos that comes later. Detroit's window is just starting to open and Tampa's is about to close. They may face each other this year and every team wants to win the cup every year but sometimes you have to be realistic about your chances. I don't see Detroit beating Florida in the Eastern Finals or beating anyone in the Final. Not this year.

Yup. It depends on which player the 1st+2nd was for. If it's for Bjorkstrand as others have loved to point out.. yikes. Probably could've had a rental Boeser for that, and then go out and sign one of the half dozen Bjorkstrand comparables that hit UFA every year for $6m or less.

If I'm in Tampa's position and I need a guy for my middle six who will have heavy checking duty and no powerplay time, then I'd much rather have Bjorkstrand than Brock Boeser. Bjorkstrand will score with anyone and is a high end forechecker. Boeser right now is not exactly lighting the league on fire away from Miller. He is not going to be worth 1st + 2nd if a club can't give him top linemates and PP time.

No 1st round pick until 2028, Tampa has empited the cupboard but they are taking their shot good for them.

Shot will be the next couple of years. With all of our players locked up, we are gonna have shopping money in July. And Bjork will still be under contract.

So, assuming Hedman doesn't fall off a cliff, next year could be better than this year.

My understanding is that this type of transaction has so many interested participants that they don’t really care who is helping who. It’s more just a market where the going rate is set by the group willing to facilitate for the best price.

Different teams may have different thresholds for participation here - perhaps targeting some specific range of dollars, so when a deal comes that is in the area you want:

you can either get your prize or let somebody else get the prize.

Bjorkstrand was just packaged with an injured Gourde (who us Seattle fans were hoping was still worth a late 1st) and the total return was two late 1sts + 2nd. That doesn't prove what you want to prove.

Virtually all of us agreed that Bjorkstrand was worth more - he's better than Gourde, Bjorkstrand was often times Seattle's best forward period - and has an extra year at good value. Maybe you should just listen to people who know better than you?

First round picks are not an overpayment when we draft and develop players better then anyone in the league and not when your keeping a window open to win cups.
