Pens are the smartest team in the NHL, right? Who else could have built an elite team around 3 top 2 overall picks in 3 years!?

Hey, they tanked at the right time.

They also found great value in Kunitz and Neal.

They have had success despite losing both Crosby and Malkin for long periods of time.

They beat the Rangers without Malkin and with Scranton-Wikesborough mainstays.

And they will find a way to make Pyatt productive — and if they don't they at least got him for less than a 1M and for 1 season. The Rangers couldn't do that.

This board gets on Brian Boyle because Brian Boyle is 6'9" on skates and 245lbs and plays as soft as a pillow.

If he intimidated with his size, he would be a much more valued asset along with the few good things he brings to the table.

Right. Fighting Zdeno Chara is an indication of being a *****. Maybe Boyle doesn't lay out people with bone crushing hits, but he is not soft as a pillow. How many people have stood up to Chara? Even though he got his ass kicked, he still had the stones to do something no one else does.

Konopka does nothing. He doesn't score. He is good on face-offs but so is Boyle. I fail to see what Konopka would bring to this team.

It's a psychological effect that happens when you bring a new guy with grit into the locker room. Other guys don't want to seem soft, so they play harder and tougher as a team when someone like that comes in. It might not last forever, but I would bet it would have more of a positive effect than a negative one to the team.

Can you account for the psychological effect that occurs when, quite quickly, the rest of the team discovers that this guy stinks at playing the game of hockey?

I think I saw Pyatt play hard on the boards for one shift this season. And I can't remember seeing him leveling another player during his time here.

He will probably score tomorrow and then get scratched within 5 games.

I've seen him be physical. I hear he's good along the boards and a he's good skater.

He's okay along the boards. He is big so that helps.

Not so much a good skater but he is not bad defensively.

I think Pyatt makes more sense for the Pens than he did for the Rangers. Rangers already have 4 Pyatt's on the team in terms of offensive potential. Pens don't need much offense to come from the bottom lines, just some guys who can eat some responsible minutes which Pyatt can do. Trade you Boyle if you want another, Pens 1st? ;)

I am indifferent that he was waived and picked up, not so much because I did not like him, more because the Rangers need skill in their bottom 6 to score enough to be competitive and Pyatt was not going to bring that to them, not that they have another option but at least they might bring up someone eventually that could do that.

The Pens had five top 5 picks in a row. Whitney, Fleury, Crosby, Malkin, Staal. 5 years is a long time of being bad, and Crosbys and Malkins aren't there every year.

Well, I don't put much stock in to the bold. Those guys are successful due to playing with Crosby and Malkin. They are moderately skilled players who would likely be 2nd liners elsewhere (Kunitz a 2nd line tweener). Look at how poor Neal played when he was originally acquired, for example.

If you put a moderately skilled guy with a superstar like a Crosby or Malkin, they are going to put up points.

Easy to do when you have so much speed throughout the lineup that having Pyatt out there 8 min a game isn't a liability.

And they have that speed because of Crosby, Malkin, Neal, etc.

No respect for that organization. Anyone can tank for 5 years in a row and come out with studs and build an elite team. Except Edmonton :naughty:

That's why I love being a Ranger fan; they'll never blatantly tank and will try their best every year because the fanbase deserves better than that. It's the easy way out, IMO

You have to see the bigger picture. A player like that isn't always about point production. Having a grit player like him in the locker room can breed a tougher, harder mentality among the other players that is seriously lacking right now.

Not that those attributes aren't important, but those attributes alone aren't enough to give him a spot. Why do you think he is being waived? Couldn't the wild benefit from those qualities as well?

I'm not asking Lucic, but something north of zero points would be a good start.

Yeah! I love being a Ranger fan and always rooting for a mediocre team! No elite talent, no deep playoff runs. Really ****ing exciting!!!

Yet, the Pens have continued to win with both Malkin and Crosby missing large swaths of seasons over the past few years.

Sure, those 2 are the cornerstones, but theres an organizational plan there that goes beyond those 2 players. You get the impression that each players knows their role and job on the ice, even if its stopgaps from the AHL -- like the team that beat the Rangers a couple weeks back.

I don't think they can see you on your high horse from behind that Stanley Cup they won.

And I can't see their Stanley Cup because it's behind an ocean that is Pens fan tears from 5 years of straight sucking and being a terrible organization

whaaaaat? Kunitz was already good in Anaheim. 1B/2A winger. Neal was awesome in Dallas. that trade pissed me off so much. I thought he was untouchable but I guess Dallas only has room for one power forward. Golgo sucks. they even sent Niskanen with him too. he was a 1B power forward and obviously a 1A power forward when playing with elite talent.

Sometimes, short-term success has to be sacrificed in favor of long-term success. But that is something that this organization is never willing to do.

You guys are hilarious. You want elite talent yet you're not willing to tank. This team loses a few games in a row and this board nearly implodes. I would honestly, love to see what this place would look like after FIVE (yes.. FIVE) years of being in the gutter

Half of you would be at the bottom of the grand canyon

I said just this morning that he'll find some degree of success elsewhere. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he becomes a reliable bottom six piece for ****tsburgh.
