Speculation: Taylor Hall Extension

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

My prediction is something close to a 4x$3.5M-$4M AAV. It sounds like Hall wants to retire as a Cane, so I wouldn't be shocked if this extension goes into his late-30s in exchange for a lower cap hit, similar to the Staal extension.

EDIT: You guys thought I was going to say 1 year, didn't you? :naughty:

Nah....if you were going to say one year, it would have been for $9M or something.

True. I just think that with our gargantuan cap reserves and with a projected 3 year explosion in cap space, the one year, $10M+ contract could be a real weapon in this year's free agency. It does represent risks for a player, but a successful stint with us could lead to an even richer pay day from the following UFA periods.

I just don't seeing a player taking that risk. Ironically enough, I think the poster child for not doing such a contract is....Taylor Hall. His one year contract at a higher dollar value in Buffalo turned out to bite him in the ass. That very well could be a Buffalo thing, but we know that the Carolina system may also be seen by some players as a "limiting" factor, so they may be not too keen to try and use a year with us to boost their stats for the next contract.

I suspect this will be beneficial for all sides if/when it gets done. I said when we acquired him I thought he could be a lesser version of what Necas brought for us or something akin to Teuvo with different play style and I think he's brought that. Even during his period of acclimation he looked like a decent fit with the team but nobody was producing all that great during the Mikko era. I think the thing that's interesting in watching him, both good and bad, is his tendency to hold onto the puck. He makes some great plays with that patience but also gets blown up a fair bit. Seems like he could be a great middle six fit for a few years.

Hall didn't actually lose much, at least fiscally-speaking, but the once-in-a-century pandemic threw a giant curveball in terms of cap space around the league. My commentary on such contracts is more similar to Orlov than Hall because Orlov, after taking a similar term risk as Hall did, is now going to enter the UFA market when the salary cap explodes.

We are destined for McKenna now

Oh my, I forgot Taylor Hall is the lottery ball specialist.

In all seriousness, him getting drafted by the Oilers was probably the worst thing to happen to him. That franchise was and still is a dysfunctional mess. He's a great talent but it seems like he plays better as one of the guys and not the guy. He wasn't going to be one of the guys in Edmonton.

I'm happy he wants to stay, he seems like he's hungry for a championship and I'd love to see him hoist the cup in a Hurricanes sweater.

Throw back to the Fall For Hall days. We got finally got him

Hall is 33, will be 34 during his next contract. Age 37-38 is that age where you commonly start to really see some steep decline from forwards in the NHL. I think a (3) year deal is most ideal.

If the cap hit is low enough, you can place Hall on the 4th line in the final year and still do pretty well considering where the cap is headed.

I just don’t see the point of the 4th year. You give him the 4th year if you’re trying to lower his cap hit, but with the cap going up you don’t need to do that.

Give him 3 years and if he’s still got game in him, keep throwing 1 year deals at him.

He also has an injury history, which makes you hesitate going long term.

Yeah I could see 2 years, $4.5-5M or 3 years, $4M.

The biggest thing I like about Hall is he does so many little things right. I had in mind some kind of slower, older offensive dynamo, but he is nothing at all like modern day Patrick Kane. He actually plays hard defensively and has lots of nose for the net finishing plays and little board moves to get the puck.

We're a team for better or worse that thrives on veteran depth. We'd rather have 4 very good lines than 1 great line, 1 ok line, and a bottom 6 of league minimums like most contenders. If he likes playing for Brind'Amour let's get him signed and have him buying in. Only problem I see isn't cap space but possibly having too few forward roster spots available next year if Nadeau blows down the doors. But that's a cross that bridge if you get there.

I’m hoping it’s two years. With him making comments about not wanting to bounce around anymore I’m sure he’s asking for 3 or 4. Don’t give it to him. He’s played great for us but his age is already showing and he’s injury prone.

I have a different view on this: it entirely depends on the cap hit. If it's structured like the Staal contract, a below-market cap hit in exchange for term, I'd be OK with a 4 year deal.
