Replacing Larsson won't be as daunting as a task as many think. It may or may not take time based on the thoughts of Ray Shero. If Shero wanted to address the hole in the lineup immediatly he could offer a player like Jason Demers a contract come July 1st. Also, yet highly unlikely, Shero can conisder trading for Kevin Shattenkirk if he truly wanted tom fill Larsson's hole with an even better player. The Devils could also take the long road which they have become known for under management of Lou Lamoriello for the past few decades. NJ has many talented young defenseman in the system including: Steve Santini, Seth Helgeson, Josh Jacobs, Reece Scarlett and a few others.
As Oilers fans know all to well your not going to be able to pick up a right shot D with a great potential & decent long term contract just anywhere (6 year, $25 mi 4.17 Mil cap hit, signed to 2021-22 vs 6 mil 2020-21 for Hall)
Jason Demers was in town with Lucic on Wed touring the new building, talk is Lucic will be signed, but I'm not hearing much about Dumers (but who knows). No offence, but FA want to go to winning teams (Or teams ready to break out), I think it would be tough to sign a coveted FA in NJ right now & if you did, expect to overpay (something we know all to well).
Shattenkirk what do you purpose as a possible trade? His contract is up next year so if anything he would be a rental & is due for a big pay raise...If he hits the FA market he will make a big pay day. Like Cherelli said in his press conference, when you give up the best player you don't win the trade & Hall was the going rate for a defenseman of Larsen's caliber.
Defensive prospects take time & even then there's no guarantee they'll pan out.
All that said, you guys will enjoy watching Hall play, he's an exciting player, on his way to being an elite point getter! Only knocks, sometimes when things don't go his way he sulks & other players pick this up & try to "push his button" to throw him off his game, but he seems to be outgrowing this. At time he seems to try to do it all himself. This is a good/bad thing - He plays on the edge of control, goes to the net so hard your just hoping he doesn't blow his knee out or something, but that's what makes him exciting to watch! And has been known to get caught on the train tracks with his head down once in a while.
I have to admit, I don't know a lot about Larson, but his is what hockeysfuture.com says about him...Doesn't sound to bad, if he can eat minutes & distribute the puck to McDavid & gang it might pan out!
Talent Analysis
Upon first glance at his numbers, one might not be overly impressed. But there is much more to Larsson’s game than numbers. He is a workhorse, capable of logging major minutes in all situations. He has played with uncommon poise for a player of his age in a league against men in the Swedish Elite League the past two years. Simply put, there aren’t very many holes in Larsson’s game. He is the complete package, capable of taking over a game with his size, skating and elite two-way skills. He’s likely not going to ever contribute elite offensive numbers from the backend, but he is more than capable of rushing the puck end-to-end, making great stretch passes with his superb vision and unleashing a hard and accurate point shot.
Future
Think of Red Wings great Nicklas Lidstrom, who just happens to be the guy that Larsson models his game after, when projecting what Larsson has the potential to become in the not-too-distant future. He has already signed with the Devils and will immediately compete for a job at the NHL level.
