I know the Leafs' plan is to target Tavares. This isn't sudoku here, trying to figure out an ending. It's a plan.

thoughts??
Lol is this guy serious? Pretty sure that he thought it was a done deal that Stamkos would sign with Toronto. And that John Tavares and Connor McDavid will join him there later on.:shakehead

Haha, what a joke.

The new Isles owners had a town hall meeting last night and probably the biggest thing was...

Owner Jon Ledecky to Islanders Fans: 'Tavares isn't going to be a free agent'
http://www.lighthousehockey.com/2016/7/15/12196890/john-tavares-free-agency-islanders-owner-ledecky

When Shannon Hogan made reference to John Tavares hitting free agency two summers from now, Ledecky interrupted: "What?" "What was one of the best moments in Islanders history last year? When Tavares scored in double-overtime and blew the roof off this place, the scoreboard almost became centered.

"He's not going to be a free agent."

If Steven Stamkos didn't want to come home and play for Toronto, i think it's infinitely less likely that John Tavares would even consider it. You could see the Stamkos connection to Toronto from multiple different angles. None of that exists with Tavares.

Right sure just like the Leaf fans definitely thought that Stamkos was coming to Toronto, Garth Snow has the money to lock up John Tavares long term. The salary cap is becoming stagnant here how is Lou going to be able to afford to give JT say $12 million and then in a few years give Matthews the same plus give big money to Nylander and Marner down the road to lock up your core something would've to give..

Right sure just like Red Wings fans definitely thought that Stamkos was coming to Detroit :help:

No knowledgeable Leafs fan wanted Stamkos as they under that he, just like Tavares, is outside the ideal age of the core that this team is being built around. Strachan is another version of Eklund - perhaps with even less credibility.

Close. But not quite ;)

But yeah, after what we saw this year and Stamkos, you have to give this at the very least another 18 months, if not 23 months before there should be any discussion of this.

Actually i was preferring to, Once Snow gets John Tavares locked up next summer with 1 more year left. Then it should cease and assist any more talking of JT to Toronto because we all know that all Toronto born players or Ontario born players want to play for the Leafs.

Get ready, Islanders fans. It's going to only get worse next year. For your sake I really hope they do what we did with Hedman and just get the deal done the first day he can be extended.

Don't worry. Nobody(with a shred of common sense) puts any stock into senile old Al.
Anyone that does should feel embarrassed or acknowledge they have a serious substance abuse problem and seek help.
Now watch this hit 1000 posts because Al Strachan said it's so.

I have a feeling Islanders will have Tavares signed by this time next(sort of like Hedman signed a year before he hit the market) year making his UFA year a moot point. I only expect it to get bad if Tavares is a UFA at the start of the 2017/18 season

Really because none of us Wing fans thought that Stamkos was coming to Detroit. Some of us were torn of him coming there because of the cost. Stamkos didn't even consider either Detroit or Toronto he was planning on signing with Tampa all along. Because he could still make a decent living there plus had a greater chance of winning the cup there.

You're right, the knowledgeable fans were too busy looking at numbers on a page thinking that was the best way to build a great team.

Literally the same thing on our end, if not more so. But when the media paints us like a bunch of morons just begging Stamkos to come here and every other story on TSN is about Stamkos to Toronto, I can see why an outside fan would get that impression.

Stamkos said a lot of things leaving the door open, and, I think I can say this now that it hasn't happened? A mod can tell me otherwise? Someone I personally have a lot of reason to believe told me he knew the family (told me that when he was in junior, originally) and he (not a Leaf fan btw) was sure he was coming. Stamkos was a special case, and they blew their chance. I'm not saying they'll never get Tavares, but it's not the same. There's no reason to get your hopes up two years out, and honestly, the only way I could see it at all is if the Isles fall apart the next two years, and the Leafs get really good, really fast.

Now, as for that... I think the Leafs are pretty good right now, tbh. They were a decent Corsi team last year with some bad luck, and I think the kids who will be up next year (and fwiw my guess is that it'll be Nylander, Marner, Matthews, Soshnikov, Rychel, Hyman, and Carrick, and if you wanna count him, Nikita Zaitsec) are all already really solid players. Sosh, Hyman, Rychel, and Carrick don't have like, massively high ceilings, but they're all also not 19 like the others. 21-23 for the lot of them. Should be expected to be players now. The other three are legitimate future top line guys, and I think they've all shown as much as they've been able to that they're ready to be players. They probably missed whatever opportunity they had to do like the Blackhawka/Penguins and win while they're on rookie deals by not getting Stamkos, but tbh the only two teams in the division that look really good are the Panthers and Lightning, and at least three teams have to make it, and I'm not a huge enough fan of the Metro teams to assume they have to make it (tho I think I'd take the Penguins, Capitals, Flyers, and Islanders over them, at least, and so to get the other WC they have to beat the Hurricanes, Devils, Rangers, and Blue Jackets - not a monstrous task imho but also not s given) via the division spot.

And the Isles? Well, they're a good team. They won a playoff round this year, they kind of underachieved in the regular season, but I sorta see how they played, like a fringey playoff team, as their floor. Sure, they lost some guys, but eh, Nielsen was getting older, and Ladd probably about makes up for Okposo for now (term will hurt, given Ladd is older), and they still haven't been giving ample opportunity to Ryan Strome, and they have Michael Dal Colle too, so to me they've got at least a few kids to fill in. They've drafted well enough that even if their top guys get older/leave, they can replace that value and stay competitive. In other words, I don't think we're approaching "Tavares wants out" territory.

I know right, I like how the media painted a picture that made it sound like it was pretty much down to Toronto and Detroit. Yet neither team was in the picture Dreger called Detroit the front runners yet Stamkos's Agent didn't even speak with Detroit at the end TSN had Detroit and Buffalo as the favorites and Toronto down the list after Tampa even these guys didn't know what was going on here.

He met the Leafs at the ACC and didn't take the Red Wings' calls. It's uhhh not the same at all.

In general, there's no way he held out all this time and signed a deal he was offered months ago if he didn't consider it. He probably likes the idea of going home to be hero, and the Leafs weren't able to convince him they'd be good soon, and mayyyyybe Simmons is right about him being overwhelmed? I don't really buy that, cuz he just seems a little too relaxed to care about that sorta thing, but it's not like I know the guy personally. He probably had serious interest in checking in with the Leafs but decided based on all available evidence he was better off in Tampa. I'm buying Leaf stock right now, but I can't say I blame him for coming to that conclusion. Even if they're as good as I think they are, I'd have trouble saying the Leafs + Stamkos are better than the Lightning with Stamkos.
