7 isnt that bad. Will probably deliever more value than that next year and with a rising cap it isnt much risk Even if he declines some 7 mill wont be that much in 3 years.
 
Tavares specifically wants to play and win IN Toronto. He will take a significant discount to make that a possibility and free up space to sign other players to help with that goal. He has made enough money this lifetime to change the trajectory of his lineage for some time if not until the end of time.

8 years/$15m AAV. Pay the face of Toronto what he deserves even if it makes him find a personality as a result.
 
JT is agood player who has been overpaid at $11M/yr, and needs to pay it back to the TML's by resigning for $5.5M x 2.
 
$6M for 3 years in Toronto is my guess. He's said he won't be maximizing his value and the team knows he doesn't want to leave. That would still be a really good deal for the team with the rising cap.

He took 11M AAV from the leafs when SJ outbid them. If he gets 7M I will love it since I hate the leafs. He’s not leaving, he will sign for less.

Never said he wouldn't take a discount.

$5M is absurd, given that his rough comparable is Pavelski in 2019.
 
We already basically know he has no desire at all to leave. Leafs have a lot of leverage. They have never shown the ability to squeeze guys though, so I think they get creative and give term to him for low AAV.

I think 6 years, 3.5AAV will be his next deal. Fits in with the rest of the deals that will be a problem in 4-5 years and extends the window by a bit especially if he will play 3C at that money
 
Only way he plays for another team is if the Leafs refuse to give him any offer. I did mention it in another thread as well, him and his wife are both locals. They want to live here, retire here and raise their family here. Unless he gets absolutely no offer at all, there is a 0 percent chance he leaves Toronto.

Deal will probably be something like 3x6M

My sister worked with his wife and before he signed in Toronto she came to the hospital she works at with her resume, citing that the decision to come to Toronto is mainly a family decision. They're both locals and want to live here, near their families and raise their kids here.

So unless Toronto refuses to offer an extension, he won't leave. He might even take a bigger bargain, something like 4x5M. I don't see him going anywhere and we're not getting a better 2C on the open market.
