Worth every damn penny. Funny as f*** seeing Oiler fans cry that JT didn't get suspended and that the league rigs it for Toronto.

If the refs do their job and called the crosschecks on JT; JT wouldn't have had to take matters into his own hands.

whatever.... totally worth it. I hope that shit hurt. Good on JT
The league will not learn. If they had a strict policy it wouldnt continue, but they worry about the flow of the game. Well, if there arent dirty plays the flow will be even better.

Granted, but the NHL brings the fans derision on themselves, by first having very poor standards of officiating, and two some of the baffling decisions by the DoPS. Desharnais started that whole thing and escalated the incident until Tavares finally had enough and retaliated. I don't disagree on the 5K fine, but if Tavares deserved one then so did Desharnais, 3 xchecks, 2 slashes and the biggest no-no a cupping.
Remember when Magnus Arvedson who thought that nothing would happen when he tried it on Tie, poor old Arvy got everything he paid for.

I'm not okay with seeing semi pro guys on HNIC who think cross checking guys like Matthews in the ribs is some kind of reliable meal ticket and job well done. If you have guys whose sole job is to dish out pain and punishment it's more than fair they get their fair share back.

I hate stick work bullshit. In the wrong hands it's a weapon, pure and simple. If the league is not going to protect its players from idiots who intentionally use it as a weapon, then the players are going to go into self-preservation mode. JT did the right thing. Kid on Edmonton learned that you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

Only reason that guy isn’t in Bakersfield is to goon it up. Well, he gooned and found out.

I view it like the league could have suspended him for one game, but, the league knew the little bastige had it coming so they just handed out a $5000 fine. JustTice served.

You would have never survived the Pronger era.

Also Edmonton fans are hypocrites.

He shouldn't have been fined. DOPS should have called in those refs and told them to call cross checks as it states in the NHL rulebook to prevent this sort of bush league shit from happening again.

That Oilers puke got what he deserved though.

I don’t understand how the league has allowed cross checking back in. They were supposed to call it and they aren’t anymore. At the start of the season they called all of them. JT deserves the fine imho but had the refs called the cross checks or the jab to the back of the knees then JT wouldn’t have had to send a message.

If I am JT and Leafs, I will appeal this decision and stated how come Vinny cross checked didn’t get a fine or a penalty? If that’s allow and legal, the whole Leafs brass will start doing that to all opposing players and the refs better not call any penalties and league better not hand out any fines.

No.

You don't injure players.

A retaliation slash after a cup check is one thing, but attempt to injured is not ok.

He got the message across, that's exactly the extent of the retaliation.

It's a fine every day of the week, and the system working as it should.

A little quick on the announcement of the fine seeing as it's been what 15 hours or so, but this is the right call.
Not true. Don’t know what level you’ve played at in whatever sport, but it’s an absolute lie that the attempt to injure isn’t a thing and that retaliation in kind isn’t the norm.

In order to be effective (and have practical expectations) you’re playing “hard” and KNOW injury is a reasonable expectation. To say it’s 100 % controllable ignores the accident - so you know it happens going in. The way to control it is to find another league/sport.

JT getting hacked and what looks like speared in the calf probably sent his mild manners into beast-mode and dollars to donuts he thought, “This guy’s going for it (injury)!” and the next thing he thought was, “Like F*^#! he is!” and swung to prevent him from going further - injury or not, c’est la vie.

I feel like our team needs to get “there”. Take the suspensions and earn the reputation that playing Toronto leaves a mark if you’re inclined to get down. There’s no other way and every championship team knows it.

Hurting someone and injuring them is not the same thing.

Hurting someone and injuring them is not the same thing.
It certainly can be.

You get into a fight, you throw a punch (on the ice, the street, wherever...) and while you might not think in the moment (expressly) that you're about to break an orbital bone, or a nose, if you've been in enough fights, you're distinctly aware you could do that very thing, or suffer it. And you absolutely know the only way to prevent injury is to not get into the fight.

Same thing in the course of a game of hockey or soccer, whatever; A guy with Tavares hand-eye coordination and knowledge could certainly target a wrist knowing where the break (no pun intended) between the cuff and the glove is. Perhaps not want to break it, but absolutely come as close as he can without doing so, and in the heat of the moment if it happens, sure, some regret, but a whole lot of, "then he shouldn't have cross-checked me three times and speared me once and tied me up through the elbow using my back as leverage".

Same way players cross-check where there's a gap in gear. Same way soccer at certain levels use their shins like bats or their weight to leverage ankle breaks or go studs up in a slide tackle, or during a head ball, happen to catch a nose on the way up. It's all directional. And you're absolutely trying to impose your will in the moment -- especially in response/retaliation.

Sure some guys are holding back a bit. But to say you know you're only going to hurt someone by dint of the game played and guarantee you're not going to injure them, is all kinds of wacky Hal Johnson, Joanna McCleod, Participaction (no pun intended) Body Break kind of wishful thinking.

And who was it...Was it Don Cherry who said, you remove fighting from the game and you're going to see an escalation in stick-related injuries?

The intention of a slash like that is to hurt the guy not to injure the guy.
Judging by the look on the guys face it dam well hurt and judging that he played the rest of the game he was not injured. Mission accomplished case closed, no further action required
