Are there any natural, innate, VOCAL leaders on this team? Doesn't really seem so.

Who is the player that most fits that description? Maybe Giordano?

And for the record i'm not even remotely implying they should make him captain. I guess my point is that it really doesn't matter who on this team wears the C. It's just window dressing.
i don't think we have any very vocal guys who would be options for the C but Rielly seems actually respected in the room and is well spoken while coming off looking sincere in interviews

With all the talk on the board about the Leafs coming out flat and playing down to weaker opponents, I’ve always thought this problem was on Keefe but where’s the captain in all of this? He seems so boring and uninspired whenever I watch postgame interviews. Recall back to the playoffs against Tampa last year when Spezza had to calm them down and give them a “spark” during intermission. Why isn’t J.T. giving them that spark, drive, motivation, etc. Is there something I’m missing? Thoughts?
Hes not the type of captain I would ever choose! hes soft gets pushed around , never drops the gloves, is he a leader? If so when? On power play , thats where he get majority of his points. Five on Five does nothing. Come playoffs he dissappears like our top 4 overpayed core? No warriors in this group who will sell out come playoff time!

His wife is the one calling the shots anyway. JT is just a follower. Only reason he was named Captain is it takes one to know one. Good leaders always know how to follow rules and directions first and foremost. JT is such a follower that he fooled everyone into believing he could fulfill this role.

That's his entire schtick, just does what he's told and doesn't ask questions or provide an opinion of his own. Anything outside of his cliche soundbite answers is above his pay grade, and he will always be the first one to run away to sniff his jock in the basement when the going gets tough. That's leadership I guess, just in the wrong direction when it comes to the overall good of this team.

If they are relying on 1 guy with a "C" stitched to his jersey to fire them up, then this project is already doomed.

There's a leadership core in there that has been there now for quite a while, that continues to shit out the same awful habits time & time again. I know we all have recency bias, but this sort of stuff was going on under Babcock as well.

For what it's worth, I don't think they gave Tavares the C to give epic rallying speeches in the room - he was always more of a "lead by example" type of leader, rather than a truly vocal one.

The only thing captains really do that we know about is be the one who talks to the Ref and often be first player to talk to the media. Anyone can do that.

behind closed doors you don't need a letter to be allowed to speak to the team and having a letter doesn't make it mandatory to speak to the team.

Being a Captain really is just for show.

Johnny is firm as stone. Really ourscoring others now. Bringing us the people together. Simmonds is his main man like hoffman in rainman. They both talk, but simmonds really brings the energy and talkative more. He makes this team a whole.

Prime quality for a leader is to be INSPIRATIONAL . By either deeds or words, a leader can inspire teammates to make a better effort, or make a personal sacrifice that allows the team as a whole, to become better. Honestly, does JT exhibit that "Inspirational quality" on or off the ice ?

Who's ever idea this thread was, I just want to say great job, seriously.

This thread has obviously awoken the Captain from his deep slumber and created some fire and maybe a somebody even slipped a pyramid under his seat on the bench.

Anybody remember Armstrong as Captain, or the much revered Davey Keon or even Sitts. Man oh man those guys were craz uhhhh nvm no they weren't! Well maybe you remember Clark or even Sandin screaming like mad ummmm nope not them either

The Captains job is simple lead the team, the Captain isn't a cheerleader, nor is the Captain there to scream ar the referees. The Captain is there as go between, to keep the players from passing off the referees. The Captain is there to keep order in the room and to keep mgmt away from the players and vice versa

If he can keep playing the way he is I’d be a happy fan. Last year he was dealing with lingering injuries and then he got affected by covid. He seems to be back to his normal self.

He can Captain me to many celebratory hangovers this season but my liver most definitely worries about a deep playoff run.

Tavares is a terrible captain lol. Totally lacking any emotion or passion. Zero attitude or pushback when the team needs it. What an uninspiring person.

He's had a very strong and dependable start to the season. The production looks good and he's well involved in the play and has jump on the rush.
He's been bad 5-on-5, but he's very good at capitalizing on the man advantage and his teammates' work.

I agree - now all we need is a panel of 3 from hf, to embed themselves with the club,, hang around with the team all year, and report back at the end of the PO, to see what conclusions they have reached
