2024 3rd, but that’s ok
It has to be 2023 3rd (or 2025 or later). Rangers don’t have a 2024 3rd, as it was traded to Phoenix (Phoenix owns it on a conditional basis, and a pick that’s owned by another team on a conditional basis can’t be traded by the team that traded it originally, I believe)

I'm guessing Arizona selected NYR's 2026 2nd instead of their 2024 3rd and we just haven't yet heard about it. Or else, how would this trade be valid?

I mean wasn't there a whole thing about does Dadanov have a NTC and Vegas didn't know about it and neither did the Ducks. It wouldn't be surprising if someone messed up or maybe everyone knows the Coyotes will get the 2026 2nd.

I don’t think that decision has been made yet (and why would Phoenix decide now and not wait until that 3rd pick is ready in 2024?)

We need to know the status of the pick in that Nemeth-Emberson trade.

I mean it belongs to the Coyotes unless they choose the 2026 instead according to capfriendly. I haven't heard anything about a decision being made on that pick.

Agreed, but I thought I read somewhere that a pick that already has conditions on it (here, the 2024 3rd) can’t be traded by the team that traded it originally (here, the Rangers). The Rangers technically don’t own that pick right now - it’s not theirs to trade - it’s in no man’s land waiting to see who owns it (Rangers or Coyotes).

So what happens when the Rangers make the playoffs and the Coyotes choose the 2024 3rd?

I just asked HFYotes if they've selected a pick from that trade. Awaiting response.

Exactly my point - the Rangers can’t trade that pick to the Blues (unless Phoenix has already selected the 2026 2nd, but Capfriendly shows no decision has been made)

The more I think about this trade the better I feel about it. Blues normally do very well in the 20-40 range of picks especially lately minus Kostin and Bokk. Blues also do very well in the 3rd round as well. Still wish we got a better return due to it being both Mikkola and Tarasenko, but I'm definitely fine with it.

Definitely will miss him and it will be tough to watch Tarasenko in another jersey. He will always be one of my favorite Blues players!

That said, I like the trade! We got the first we wanted, the Rangers are very likely to make the playoffs so I'm assuming we'll get the 4th converted to a 3rd round pick, and we have done well with our 2nd and 3rd round selections in a lot of recent drafts.

Welcome back Sammy Blais! Hopefully he can stay healthy, I won't be upset if he walks in free agency or we give a close to league minimum contract extension.

Hunter Skinner, seems to be a guy who was on the path to college hockey before playing a year in the OHL and then subsequently turning pro at the age of 20. It sounds like he's a guy that has tools to be an NHL defenseman but has never consistently shown those skills.

Hopefully he can put those tools in the toolbelt together as he continues his development. Like many collegiate players he is hopefully a guy that puts those skills a little later than the major junior players typically do. He's definitely a project at this point.

NYR fan here. I come in peace. I know nothing about Niko outside of stats. Can you guys tell me about him? Is he a legit dman or just a throw in?
can have a few good games. hes a 3rd line pairing and will never be more than that. hes fine for depth i guess.

with that said, im thrilled hes gone. hes a low IQ hockey player who makes truly stupid mistakes and plays on almost every shift and has no offensive skill at all and average at defending. hes big which is his only strength but again, hes a stupid player.

you will probably hate him after a month and he will be a healthy scratch.

But good thing is we got something out of Tarasenko. He didn't walk for nothing.
thats why i laugh at people whining about the return. got a 1st round pick for a guy who army ran out of town and was a UFA. plus he had to approve the trade as he had a NTA. the only part i don't like is retaining 50% of the salary and not getting more for the rangers for doing that.

I see lots of tears on Twitter and elewhere about this deal. I think it's a winner.

1) Vladi through his agent made it known that he wanted out of here. He got what he wanted. I'm surprised so many fans were in denial of this fact for so long.
2) Vladi's play has declined and maybe playing in the Big Apple with his Russian buddy will re-invigorate his game. That's a win for Vladi.
3) We get some draft picks for what would have been Vladi's 3 final months with the team...that's a win for the Blues
4) I liked Mikko, but I don't think he lived up to his potential here...maybe he finds it in NY...that's a win for Mikko.
5) I love getting Sammy back. That guy wiill play hard. We miss that. We've started playing WAY too soft...I just hope he stays healthy. That's a win for Berube style of hockey.
6) I have no clue who this Hunter Skinner kid is. That's a mystery or maybe just a meh.

The actual conditions read "2024 4th, will become a 3rd round pick if the Rangers make the playoffs"

The conditions don't say when the 3rd would be. It could be the 3rd in 2023 that they received from Colorado in the Georgiev trade, or the 3rd in 2024 if AZ takes the 2nd in 2026, or the 3rd in 2025.

Right, but if Arizona hasn’t made that selection yet, then I don’t think the 2024 3rd is a possibility. Are we thinking that Phoenix can notify Rangers 30 seconds before that 2024 3rd rounder is due to be selected, they say they’re picking the 2026 2nd, and all of a sudden the Blues are on the clock? I don’t think the 2024 3rd can be traded by the Rangers right now, even conditionally.

Blais has 3 hits a game this year. I for one got quite a bit of enjoyment watching him cleanly light up Lucic and trigger a major scrum 2 days ago.

I enjoyed it too, but I’m also one of those “hits aren’t really a positive play because you generally only get them when the other team has the puck” people. Getting a player who hasn’t scored a goal this decade and whose main appeal is “hits people a bunch” makes me feel better about our attempts to get a higher draft pick, but not about said players viability when we try to be good again.

Again it doesnt say it was the 2024, 3rd round pick.

Like you I wonder if it is the 2023 3rd round pick.

Gotcha, agreed! An additional 2023 3rd would be huge - I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it’s more ammunition to move up in the 1st, or package with our other 3rd to move to the 2nd, etc.

Anybody realize that Blais absolutely destroyed his right knee last season? Dude had a complete 100% tear of the ACL.
