Tanner Jeannot trade

Yeahhhh….I mean…..they probably could’ve landed Timo Meier if they tossed in Isaac Howard at this point looking back at all the deals….lol

Crazy to give up that much for Jeannot, but with that being said, he got injured and obviously the Hedman and Cernak injuries didn’t help. He definitely fits the mold of fast-ish physical complimentary bottom 6 fwds thst have some scoring ability that TB typically added each year they went on their cup runs (Coleman, goodrow, Hagel etc..) If they won this series and went on a another run, this discussion probably wouldn’t be as lopsided as it is

Would love for you to give me one player who was available with as much upside as Jeannot who is cost certain and has upside.

‘Lots of options’

Doubt
He's basically Jake Evans so probably Jake Evans.

I don't really see a 26 year old coming off an 18 point season as having tremendous upside. Certainly not if you look at his scoring history through junior and the ahl.

In total fairness to him, I don't see goal scoring as his issue. He'll almost certainly never shoot 20% again but he regressed to a very low % this year and if things stabilize at a normalish number going forward he could hit 12-15 yearly which is fine for a 4th line type.

Unfortunately that's about all he does effectively. Sure he hits a lot but he's not really doing all that much to actually win games with the physicality, he's kind of a mess defensively, he doesn't drive play or have any real transition skill, he's not a terribly good skater. There are better options for bottom 6 who can score similarly that can play defense well at least.

Plus word around NSH was that he had quite high salary demands for what he was producing, which who knows. We'll see how that works out in Tampa I guess.

The trade will only ever look good if they take him out of that goon role. Make him a “3rd” guy playing on one of the top two lines and let him go when he absolutely has to. Otherwise they paid hela much for an enforcer who isn’t even top tier at that aspect.
His skating is worse than maroons and that’s saying something. He looked couple of steps behind most of the time, even on the 4th line, and that’s prior to his injury.

Right now its looks pretty bad ( as it did when it happened ) but since he's RFA this might still turn out ok in the longer run . They were clearly banking on Jeannot to return to form of last year and that has not happened yet.

Maybe with a full camp and all that. Right now massive overpayment but also injuries played a part

4 points in 20 regular season games

0 points -2 in the playoffs

Nashville received defenseman Cal Foote, a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, and a third-, fourth- and fifth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Is this one of the worst trades of all time?
It sounds bad but hitting a player like jeannot with any of things picks is probably incredibly rare

He is slower than maroon, other stuff you said isn’t worth mentioning.
Well the other stuff is why they traded for him….and also why they traded for Paul, Coleman, goodrow, hagel(tho he’s clearly a tier or two above these guys as a player), signed maroon etc…. It’s unfortunate for TB he wasn’t able to provide that, but that’s what he was in Nashville and that’s what TB was investing in at the deadline.

If u just want to point out my generalization of fast-ish for those guys then go ahead, I’m not dying on that hill lol, I don’t really care, maybe he’s slower than I remembered, but the type of player and attributes he was supposed to bring to the table are exactly what I stated, so not sure how that’s “not worth mentioning” but that one little -ish word apparently grinds your gears to no end… lol

I don't think finding a Jeannot (or better) in the 1st or even 2nd round is "incredibly rare".

But idk I also believe Jeannot types are easy enough to find as cheap FAs that I'll gladly take the roll of the dice on draft picks.

This is one of the most mind boggling trades I have ever seen. 6 assets for an agitator.

So, here's what I don't get. Why, exactly, do you think that Jeannot had so much upside?

I’d like to see him healthy. they’ll have him for a few years after this one. Too early to come to conclusions like “one of the worst trades of all time”

people said the same thing last year about Hagel…

« As much upside » like in healthy scratch on a team with Bellemare and Marroon on the LW?

I was rooting for the Leafs in this series because I'm sort of bored with Tampa winning so much, but I don't think this trade is as bad as you're making it sound. Jeannot was clearly not even close to 100% after that knee injury. And he's still under team control, so it's not like he was a rental.

I know Jeannot was playing injured, wonder how severe the injury was.

Jeannot looked like he couldn’t accelerate normally.
