Tanner Jeannot trade

What were Tampa suppose to do with all those mid-round picks? Their window is now and a couple of years more. Why the hell would you want to draft a player that is NHL ready in 5+ years? That's when it's primetime for Tampa to tank and you can tank without a bunch of drafted players.
Even if you really wanted to trade all those assets to try and improve your team, could they not have been used for someone better than Jeannot? He played 3 games in this series and did pretty much nothing except throw some hits and have that big fight with Schenn.

Schenn only cost the Leafs a 3rd pick and he's had a significant impact on the team in being a good partner for Rielly and helping him explode to look like a Norris trophy Dman in this series and he also brings that much needed toughness on defense that the Leafs were lacking.

What does Jeannot bring other than hits and being good at fighting? If he gets re-signed by the Lightning, they better hope he regains his scoring ability to make this trade not look nearly as bad as it looks right now.

...with what picks?

It's not like it's ever bad to have assets
Yes. It is. It's bad when you have every single core player locked up long-term and you're desperately trying to win more cups. You don't have any need to draft players that will be NHL regulars in 2030. With good enough pro scouting you can sign free agents to fill those spots.

Even if you really wanted to trade all those assets to try and improve your team, could they not have been used for someone better than Jeannot?
Probably not this season and Tampa wanted to go for it this season. Hagel was dreadful last playoffs when he came over at the deadline and he's had a really good playoffs this year.

Schenn only cost the Leafs a 3rd pick
Different needs for different teams. Tampa needed depth in their bottom 6 and a D partner for Hedman. Schenn has already played in Tampa so they probably got a pretty good idea what he couldn't bring to this Tampa lineup.

He was one of Tampa’s worst players this series, but he was also playing hurt. He’s only 25, and an RFA, this trade will be judged on his career with Tampa, not just his first season.

the bar was pretty low

a Big hit
strong on the forcheck
a fight to try and change momentum

literally anything of relevance was what was asked of him

guy was invisible.

It’s crazy to me that the salary cap is almost 20 years old and people don’t understand that you pay for cost certainty. Jeannots RFA status and the fact he will command less then 3 million a year on an extended deal, and have huge upside, could be worth the trade. We don’t know yet. But ya sure let’s let 20 games decide that.

He’s an RFA you goofs.

Way too early to judge, unlikely to be good value but also unlikely it stays looking quite so bad a year from now

Tampa could have gotten more of an impact player with retention for the amount they gave up for Jeannot.

It was a pretty big waste of assets.

Yeah? Who could have they got that will also fit under their salary cap next year?

I feel like some people are mixing up the trade being inexplicable (which it isn't) with the trade just being bad (which, for this season, it was)

Maybe Jeannot lives on to greater things in Tampa Bay, but its hard to believe there really weren't better opportunities this season and next when other teams found them for less.

Why do we care what someone else paid for something they wanted?

I don't question the expenditure of friends and family on their vehicles, furniture or vanity shit.

Who the f*** cares?
What have you talked about in your 5k+ posts on here? Hopefully nothing other than your own beer league hockey experiences.

This man was not brought here to be a healthy scratch.. Brisebois gets a lot right...this one he didn't.

I'm not a GM so will never know who exactly would be available.

I'm sure lots of options would be on the table when you are offering a young roster player, a 1st, 2nd, 3rd,4th, and 5th though.

That's a huge haul for Nashville on a so-so player.

Probably best to stick to the Leafs forum then, yes?

In all likelihood those picks account to nothing and it's not like Jeannot is a pending UFA.

Reeks of a thread desperate to finally dump on Tampa for something after years of success

Would love for you to give me one player who was available with as much upside as Jeannot who is cost certain and has upside.

‘Lots of options’

It’s not so much that draft picks could hit or not, it’s that they could have gotten back much better value with what they gave up

OK he's an RFA but the thing is he's just not good. He's been replacement level all year after riding an absurd sh% heater last season.

Also he's 25 so expecting major improvement is unlikely. Cost certainty is great and all but I'd be wary of paying much more than minimum for this type of player
