Goalies aren’t allowed bad games?

Man glad you’re perfect

Pardon the sloppy crop job but that's Vasi this season.

Sure, goalies are allowed bad games, just saying Vasi's had a few already this season. Enough for me to point it out, accurately I might add.

4 games after back surgery? Can a guy get some time? As long as TB can hang around the fringes, as soon as vas gets back to himself they will creep in as a WC. A dangerous WC too

They have 1 UFA worth anything at the deadline should they remain a non-playoff team, and most of the top players are locked up for the next half decade. What you see, good or bad, is what you'll get in TB for a while.

The 8 year deals he signed everyone to aren't going to look great at the start, but should age nicely. I think the big issue is we aren't trying to win 8 years from now, we need the players who've signed to live up to their contracts now.

I’m actually not concerned with the term on those deals. I’m talking more about things like signing Cirelli to a contract more suitable for a strong two-way center than a defensive specialist who contributes a little secondary scoring; signing semi-skilled weaklings like Namestnikov and Sheary to pricier deals than their postseason performances merit while passing over cheaper free agents who better fit the mold that had been successful for us in the playoffs; not locking Gourde up longterm before he broke out, then panicking and overpaying him when playing with Point inflated his stats, which then led to having to let him go in the expansion draft rather than protect him. Then there’s the things JBB didn’t do, such as address our glaring weaknesses in defense and secondary scoring this offseason. Like I said, he still deserves a lot of credit for finding the last pieces the Lightning needed to win back-to-back championships, but his track record is far from flawless.

No argument from me, all fair criticisms of JBB

how does Tampa value Erik Cernak and Nic Paul?

Despite his numerous injuries the Lightning can’t afford to trade Cernak - he’s the one reliable defensive defenseman they have left after McDonagh’s departure and Hedman’s decline, and as we all saw in the playoffs when the Leafs took him out with a cheap shot, when he’s not in the lineup Tampa’s defense suffers greatly.

As for Paul, while he isn’t untouchable I’m not sure what the Lightning could get for him that would make them a better team. He’s a versatile player who can be used on any line, at any (forward) position, and in all situations, and he’s been their best depth scorer thus far this year; on top of all that he’s on a very reasonable contract. Again, he’d be available for the right price, but it’s difficult to imagine what a team would realistically offer for Paul that would benefit the Lightning more than simply keeping him would.

If we’re going to move a forward I’d actually rather move Cirelli, though that opinion is probably quite controversial among Lightning fans. I’d be sad to see him go as I love his grit and defensive game, especially in the playoffs, but he’s just paid too much for the amount of offense he provides and between what he could return in trade and what the Lightning could do with his cap space, I just think moving him could be the quickest route to fixing their depth issues. Plus it would ensure better performance out of Stamkos - for some reason Cooper loves to put the two of them together and it just doesn’t work.

Myers+1st+Kudryavtsev for Cernak. Myers can be flipped for a mid round pick at the deadline. He’s in the last year of his deal and his real salary is miniscule.

Fire sale? For Tampa?
Maybe? They are aging out after a great run. Two Cups! If they were smart they would try to sell off some older guys and rebuild. Hard to do now though with the salary cap and how their top guys have longer contracts and big cap hits. Got to think though guys like Hedman and Kucherov would still return a lot.

1. The Lightning can’t afford to trade Cernak - he’s the only reliable defensive defenseman they have left.

2. We already have one shitty giraffe defenseman named Myers; we don’t need to complete the pair.

Andrei Vasilevskiy .859 Sv% , $9.5m AAV x 4+ seasons
Jack Campbell .873 Sv%, $5m AAV x 3+ seasons

Cap dump for cap dump... but Lightning have to add for the contract differential.

Vasilevskiy + 7th rounder for Campbell?

Would love having Cernak on the Jets, but as the Lightning are my second team, I understand his value to the Lightning.

Tampa is honestly in great shape to do a re-tool on the fly while remaining competitive. If they ship Stammer out for picks and prospects he’d likely get a great return of picks a prospects (first round pick +). They clear out the cap this year, although a chunk goes to Hagel. Then if they feel it necessary, they could trade Hedman the next year for a kings ransom. This one I think hurts more as he’s been such a steady presence for so long on the Tampa backend, but the return would be spectacular.

Fire sale is a term for pennies on the dollar. Tampa isn't at that stage. They are still a good team

You can't count a team like this out. Just like you couldn't count out old man OV and his "non-contender Caps". They went from meh to swimming in public fountains.
