GDT: Tampa @ Carolina Game 5: The Wretched Rally Towel Prophecy

In the early hours of Wednesday, May 26th, 2021, the Canes board would change forever:

A beloved (and incredibly drunk) member posted this iconic towel rant:

At the time we truly could not understand the significance of this event. But, little did we know, these wretchedly ambiguous towels would prophesy a potential Canes comeback in round 2:

Let me carefully decipher the message of this Wretched Towel Prophecy (powered by Diehard).

1. “Why no date, game number, opponent?”:

There was no opponent listed, because these towels were not meant for that night, but for Tampa. There was no date because the date is now ( :: rock music increases in the background ::).


2. “WTF is resilience?”

In other words, resilience is the ability to get kicked in the metaphorical “ding ding” and recover. (Also apparently our horribly deformed bodies may reshape as well!)

3. Why is “Resilience” Repeated 3 times?”

Because, the Canes will have to kick the other team in the “ding ding” 3 games in a row to win the series.

4. “Is MV writing the slogans now?”

No, but we would be incredibly lucky to have @MrazeksVengeance write anything. (VENGEANCE IS OUR ONLY SOLACE).

Obviously they have to win and bring their A game etc etc

What I’ll be interested in: does this team come off that game 4 loss with a chip on their shoulder, or do they go quietly? Forget the series outcome for now, just simply seeing the way this game plays out (win or lose) will tell us something about where we are and what the next steps need to look like.

Tampa has been in their faces constantly since the start of this series. No other team has disrupted the Canes’ passing game in all three zones, whether at ES or on the PP, to this extent. We’re seeing a lot of dumb penalties and an inability to stop them on the PK after those penalties. Regardless of the game outcome, are they in a place mentally where they can take the hit to make a tough pass, avoid the cheap penalty, get the quick first step toward the puck, win the 50/50 battles? Those details have to be tight to beat a team like this, and they haven’t really been that way with any kind of consistency so far.

At this point losing the series wouldn’t be a surprise, but there’s an even bigger plot arc playing out here that involves a few guys in particular cheating the game rather than rising to the challenge. Forget the scoreboard, that’s what I’ll be watching.

ETA: @tarheelhockey good points about this team's mental makeup. I'm thinking that two-day gap couldn't have come at a better time. I will be really happy and impressed if they come out flying tonight after such a demoralizing loss.
