What happened to MDZ? I remember in his first two years breaking into the league he used to make some of the best breakout passes to the far blue line that I've ever seen. I can't remember the last time he made a pass like that. You guys think that's something Torts made him take out of his game due to a low success rate and now he naturally doesn't do it? He used to shred forechecks with that first pass..

could I see said pass? :)

We get on MDZ a lot on this board. Why is John Moore getting a pass? He has been AWFUL this year. Not saying he won't get better, but he deserves some criticism. He has been horrendous. Easily the Rangers worst D-man.

"But he's a good skater". Big deal, so is Michelle Kwan. He needs to play better hockey.

Probably because Moore was a throw in in a trade, and not a first round rangers draft pick.

Plus moore only has 117 NHL games under his belt, a season and a half.

MDZ has more than twice as many, 266.

DEL ZOTTO TRADE A POSSIBILITY?
Written by Kevin DeLury on Friday, 15 November 2013 16:40.

Renaud Lavoie of the Montreal Journal wonders with the Rangers scratching Michael Del Zotto for tomorrow's game in Montreal if he still has a future in New York and is hearing that a trade is a possibility.

This is the third time this month Del Zotto's name has been mentioned in possible trade talks for the Rangers.

...first Del Zotto's a healthy scratch, now this? Did Christmas come early for Rangers fans this year?"

Good question. One of his strengths was that he's suppose to be a good passer.

Other teams have figured out how to read him--more or less meaning his offensive game has not really evolved. The pwp for instance. They know he's very unlikely to blow one past their goalie from the point--his other option is to try to make a play--they look for the play because they don't fear his shot and he's not really the kind of skater that can beat his coverage with his dekes. He's easy to read.

Those passes are why I fell in love with MDZ.

It's the reason why all of us fell in love with his game and saw the sky as his limit. Gotta believe it's a big lack of confidence that's really hurting him nowadays.

I doubt the trade rumor. Maybe MDZ gets the same treatment as Zucc did, that was a success.

Besides, its time to let Falk play a game or two, he must be pretty tired of the press box.

im kind of confused by AV scratching him. i didnt think he was that bad during the devils game. falk is terrible at everything, DZ is mediocre at everything (at least right now).

Moore has been way worse, not sure why he doesn't get scratched or really any criticism.

Same here; I don't think DZ's play warrants being scratched from the lineup right now,

I thought he played well last game - better than he had been. I know I remarked how I liked how he was actually hitting the net with his shot on Tuesday.

You know, I think DZ being on the right side has negatively impacted both his play AND that of Moore.

Regarding DZ: we've all seen with our own eyes that he is an unquestioned top 4 defenseman on the left side and on the left side only. Unfortunately, despite having played there for over a season now, he has been unable to adjust to the right side - it seems to have neutered his offensive game and on defense, he isn't nearly as comfortable playing the body and, worse, drifts back to the left time and time again, throwing the whole defensive configuration out of balance.

Regarding Moore: he suffers from DZ's instability. He needs a stalwart, simple, defensive defenseman on his partner who can cover for him when he makes a rush. You'd want to see him making the plays we saw last year and in preseason where he rushes up to force the offense and then, if the puck turns the other way, zooming back to get into position. But, in order to do that, he needs a stable, confident, defensively sound partner who he knows will have his back. With DZ out of sorts Moore plays kind of betwixt and between and shows a similar level of shakiness, because he can't really commit to the type of game he should be playing.

Both players are much better than we've seen recently, but they've held each other back as a pair. DZ needs to play on the left side (if not for the Rangers, then with someone else) and Moore needs your basic, stable defense partner to support his game. Both will continue to struggle IMO until they're put in a position to succeed.

I would've traded Del Zotto at his trade peak without flinching. He has too low hockey IQ to be an effective defenseman, especially with the puck, which was supposed to be his strength. Then what does he have left? His glaring mistakes are too frequent and you can't afford that in a defenseman. Perhaps he should've practiced to become a winger instead, where his low hockey IQ could've been masked better and his mistakes wouldn't be as costly.

Even when he played at his best, he still made those idiotic mistakes you would've been disappointed in a junior hockey player for making, because yes, they are that bad.

Girardi for example is horrible with the puck, but he is very solid defensively to make up for it. That's not exactly the case with Del Zotto. Not that I would have Girardi as any sort of key piece in building a modern hockey team, it's better to have defensemen who don't need to defend all the time, because they are constantly giving the puck away to the other team. Girardi's outlet passes are absurdly bad for a NHL defenseman and can't play the point to save his life.

Falk looked like he really wanted a job tonight. He's a very good skater for a big guy. He also provides some toughness.

Huh, despite looking alright in the first period; Falk's game deteriorated towards the middle and especially end of the game.

I'm not impressed at all with him. He isn't good enough to be a consistent #6 in the lineup.
