This really is perplexing. Send him down already and let him get reps. This is the center piece of the ror deal sputtering already. We can dress ahl vets or whatever to get him down. Not a fan of this development plan but they know better than me...

Thompson in charge of the ice cream freezer confirmed.
He's the only one that can change the light bulbs inside the lockers after the Pegula's remodeled the locker room. They acquired Berglund to fill that role, but he's not flexible enough to contort his body to fit in that small area where the lights are. Murray never appreciated what he had in Tyler Myers.

Real talk: no one has ever appreciated what Tyler Myers is/was. Ruff saw tall and thought Chara. What he was was Brian Campbell Big&Tall.

NHL practices against NHL talent. I have no doubts that they are communicating what they need from him. If they feel he was that close on the bubble, then he's basically undergoing an extended training camp.

Do I think he'd be better served in the AHL? Hard to say. A lot of his issues would likely not be fixed in the AHL, because the extra fancy moves he likes to try will have a much higher success rate in the AHL. Perhaps time with the Americans would do damage in the long run, because he may become more reliant on his stickhandling.
Using this logic why are the guys tearing the AHL a new asshole being kept in Rochester? Why not bring them up and have them practice with an NHL team but sit in the press box every night? It makes no sense.

Because they don't have bad habits which playing against lessor competition reinforces? :dunno:

Pilut & VO are being given time to adjust to the smaller rink and general goonishness of NA. Tage grew up like that, what he needs to do is stop playing like he's still in juniors, and the AHL might just reinforce his bad tendencies.

It's obviously unfalsifiable, and honestly, a higher level of thinking than most sports organizations seem to use.

But again unless you play him in NHL games and let him get murdered on a nightly basis how do you expect those bad habits to ever be broken? Practice is nice but it in no way equals an actual game. And correct me if I'm wrong but Tage in the AHL wasn't like he was wrecking that league or anything so I question the idea he is beyond playing in the AHL.

Maybe they want him in Buffalo so our own strength guys can keep an eye on him and have him on their specific path. He's clearly underweight, and looks like he tires very easily. Out of the guys in Roch that should be in Buffalo (Nylander, Pilut, Olaf) none of them need to put on at least 25 lbs. Just a theory ...

I hear you, and I'm trying not to endorse this view point as authoritative, merely a thought worth examining. In stressful situations, we revert to our tendencies, and he'll be rewarded for doing so against opponents who can't cope with him, preseason showed that. Even though he wasn't racking up points he was clowning fools, that's positive feedback which hurts him.

I don't know the answer to this, to me it seems like really inside baseball coaching technique.

Which is surprising, because with a name like Tage you'd think he'd be into Cross Fit and all manners of Bro Science.

It might be a conditioning thing. They're saying some of the same things they said about Zadorov when they wanted him to get in better shape. Edmonton is now doing the same thing with Puljujarvi who reportedly has terrible conditioning. Zadorov couldn't be sent down though but if they want Thompson working with Buffalo trainers at all times then it makes a little sense.

He needs reps in game action to improve what he's not good at. Practice isn't likely to get that done.

Sure, but if his practice tendencies or his conditioning, as @Moskau suggested above, are not up to snuff, then I wouldn’t want to see him dressed to play.

Regardless, it really is a question that I wish a reporter would ask Housley.

At this point I am inclined to say he shouldn't. He's been an anchor on whatever line he touches.
That's fine. Irrelevant to my point, but fine.

EDIT: At this point I'm willing to trust the coaching staff with what they feel is best for Tage's development. Moreso than what Joe HFer thinks is best. If that's watching the NHL for now instead of playing the AHL, then so be it. The people saying "yeah but they aren't even playing him" can rest assured, he'll be cycled in or sent down soon enough.

Do people think Thompson is never going to play another NHL game or something?

Is this a broad assumption directed at me that my thinking reps in a proven developmental league damns him to never return or writes him off entirely?

His body of work has been particularly unimpressive. If a player groomed from within was as unimpressive, he would have been sent down much like Bailey and Baptiste were at times last year when they didn't bring anything of value.

"NHL practices against NHL talent."
"He needs reps in game action to improve what he's not good at. Practice isn't likely to get that done."

Assumed your post was referring to reps in the NHL, not AHL. To which my response was effectively "don't worry, he'll get NHL reps eventually". No reason to think he never will.

My point was to put him in game action and practices with the farm team. Sitting around in the pressbox rarely does anything for a player's development, no matter how often he practices with the squad. I didn't realize I wasn't clear in my view of assigning him for duty with the Amerks rather than rotating him into an NHL lineup he does not deserve to crack at this time.

If the Sabres feel like he's benefiting from his time off the ice in some way, what reason do we have to disagree? Not to sound like "Sabres management can never be wrong because they have jobs" but honestly, why assume we know better than the people working directly with Tage on a daily basis? Development is as much mental as it is physical.
