Since the tournament has come to an end for Switzerland I would like to add some closing thoughts.
Overall it was a good performance by the team, better than anticipated. We even avoided the obligatory blowout this year. The defence was the best part of our roster. Berni and Gross (when he was in the lineup) were about as good as last year. Aebischer was even better. His play makes you wonder if some NHL team will draft him as an overager. Moser had ups and downs overall an made some uncarasteristic turnovers. The three newcomers started rather weak but got better as the tournament went on.
The forward lines were good as well. Especially the Nussbaumer line put up impressive numbers. A lot of other forwards like Knak, Berri and Wetter werent noticable in every game but chiped in every once in a while. Schmid will probably never bee an offensive dynamo, but was very important as a high engery player and pk specialist. Gerber and Sopa were a bit dissapointing thogh as I expected the to be anmong the more noticable forwards berfore the tournament started. The PP was not very good either and needed to be better to advance into the medal rounds. If you factor in that the talent level was lover than in some other years the forward corps still gave an impressive performance overall.
Unfortunately Goaltending wasnt a strentgh this time around. Hollenstein couldnt repeat his performance from last year and never reached the same level of play. He was also responsible for some bad goals especialy early in the tournament. Charlin was much better but didnt get many starts unfortunatly.
I liked the coaching as well. Paterlini seemed to have a gameplan against every oponent except Sweden and with a bit more luck even a victory against Russia wouldnt have been out of reach. Only his decision to start Hollenstein in quarters was a bit of a headscratcher but didnt cost us the game ultimatly.
All in all it was a fun tournament as a fan and especially the games against Finland and Slowakia were enjoyable to watch. Next year as our goaltenders, D-Core and some important forwards will age out a difficult WJC lies ahead. Hopefully some of our 2001 and 2002 born players will improve until then so we can avoid relegation.
