I don’t think Colorado was concerned with Rantanen’s future once they had that offer for Necas on the table from Carolina.

It was very risky on Carolina’s part to trade for him without some form of commitment for Rantanen to stay there. Maybe they thought having Finnish guys like Aho or Kotkaniemi would help the transition?

Necas had a hot start. But he is in no way near rantanen.

There is no way the Canes are looking to trade him before the TDL. That would make them complete imbeciles and they seem to be a pretty well run team.

Of course Necas is not as good as Rantanen, but he’s pretty good and they have him for one more year at a very affordable $6.5M. With the cap going up, I can see Colorado using some of the money that would’ve gone to Rantanen to add another solid player near the $7M mark.

It’s kind of crazy Carolina didn’t ask for permission to talk to his agent before the trade considering they went through this last year with Guentzel

And how do the Canes look if Rantanen walks on July 1 like Guentzel did last year? Is moron higher or lower on the DSM?

Then they shouldnt have traded for him. Or added in another asset to see about doing a sign and trade, but you dont trade for a guy and flip him if he doesnt sign with you. Have you ever seen that happen before ? Ever ? No, you havent because nobody is stupid enough to do it.

The Canes are a team thats not afraid to go for it and Im sure they just decided to go all in. They will be a team to watch.

agree , use him as your rental and who knows what can happen if they have a good run - maybe he bonds with the new teammates and decides to

Yup, a nice run (not that I want the Canes to achieve any kind of success) will give him an opportunity to acclimate himself and possibly convince him he’s on a Cup contending team (assuming he values that).

The media is making a bigger deal out of it than it is.

Rantanen arrived at Carolina when the Canes were in the middle of a norovirus outbreak, leading to some very disjointed play. Then he took a shot to the leg and lost a game to injury. Then he went off to play in the 4 Nations tournament. He’s spent…maybe a week total?…in Raleigh since the trade. And obviously, that’s not a lot of time for a person to decide if they want to commit 8 years to a location, especially after an apparently unexpected trade from Colorado.

So Carolina is doing what they can. They’re presenting him with an offer that’s going to match, if not exceed, any offer he’s going to get in FA. They’re showing that money won’t be an issue if he does decide to stay. And with the Canes having a pretty good run of home games over the next week or so, he’ll get a much better idea of the area.

Obviously, the deadline is a real time crunch though, because Carolina can’t risk losing him for nothing.

I think it's safe to assume the Canes did ask for permission and were denied, or they were made aware that such permission wouldn't be granted. Clearly the Avs didn't want word to leak that they were in trade discussions.

Islanders and Vanek in 2014.

Not quite the same, they had Vanek for 5 months. This is more like buying a new car, driving around the block and returning it minus 20%.

Players seem to enjoy Carolina so give him time, and take a run this post season.

32 thoughts.

Some teams are waiting to see what happens with Rantanen, but he isn't holding up the trade market.

Friedman believes the Canes offered more than 12.5, but less than 14
