I picked Swayman because he was great in the playoffs and Hellebuyck has struggled in the playoffs.

This can certainly change. Goalies like Bobrovsky and Barrasso struggled in the playoffs, but turned it around later and became good playoff goalies. Many goalies do this.

Do I think Hellebuyck will become a good playoff goalie? Yes, and then I'll rank him above Swayman. But until then, I'm ranking Swayman ahead.

Swayman because I’m confident he’s really good and he’s a lot younger. Hellebuyck may outperform Swayman a bit the next few years but I think Swayman could massively outperform Hellebuyck in the later years.

In a vacuum or considering everything?

In a vacuum it's Hellebuyck, no question. In reality its a coin flip. The Hellebuyck contract is gonna be a tough pill to swallow in 2-3 years and 5.5 years of age difference is an eternity in goalie time

Swayman has one playoffs where he plays well and he’s a more proven playoff goalie than Hellebuyck? Hellebuyck took Winnipeg to the conference finals at a younger age than Swayman is now

Everyone hated the bobrovsky deal until he was unbeatable 2 years in a row in the playoffs and won a cup. He was already proven tho in cbj

That's a good point.

I'd say that I'm rating them right now at this moment, Swayman having just had a great playoff, and Helle having a poor one. I'm sure he'll bounce back and have good playoffs, and is more proven overall, but I'd rather have Swayman because of his much younger age, and he looked so great consistently, I think he's for real.

Regardless of the difference in age, Hellebuyck is the easy pick. He’s still only entering his age 31 season. He’s an absolute work horse in today’s NHL, one can’t hand wave away his accomplishments, and he has more than proven he can be trusted.

If Swayman comes out and wins a Vezina right after signing that contract, we can start discussing who is worth it more going forward. Holding the pathetic Leafs to 9 goals in the first round isn’t enough to point to him being a playoffs god.

Clearly Hellebuyck. Has actually been a starting goalie in the NHL and won 2 Vezinas in the process. He also is behind a much worse team defensively and has outperformed Swayman over a much larger sample. Playoffs are a small sample and teams and matchups matter a lot.
