Meant to start this thread before the premiere last night.

Season 47 started out like all recent seasons. 3 Separate tribes of 6 players each. The episode opened with a marooning, as usual, and Jeff immediately took them to their first challenge.

At first glance the tribes appear to be relatively equal in terms of strength and mental acuity. As many of us have discussed in the general discussion thread, the cast continues to be mostly a bunch of white collar folks. It seems they're getting more people who are somewhat public. I really am very much against the fact that they cast a host of Rob Has a Podcast, but I guess we'll see how that transpires. This Link has a list of character bios.

As far as Episode 1 goes, I'm glad they went with a shocker right out of the gate. Makes me wonder what they weren't showing us that went down to lead to that vote. It really blows me away that Andy wasn't voted out. I tend to think that people saw through John's "I'm just a podcast host" shtick and were intimidated by his silver tongue and obvious intelligence, also the fact that he was not really gelling with the rest of the tribe due to him being a bit older. Kinda wild that someone who is only 41 could be considered "the old guy" on the tribe. .

I kind of like the twist that they did with the boxes inside the boxes. It's a good test of temptation to see how far someone is willing to go to see how much power they're going to try to get. Almost bit them a couple times already. I always find it comical that people get judgmental of others for doing what everyone should be doing... which is looking for advantages or idols.

All in all, it's obviously too early to tell how this season will be. I hope Andy doesn't go full on Brandon or Bhanu mode, as I don't really like when they focus too much on the 'crazy guy'.

My take...

All right that didn't take long. First contestant - first douchebag. I cannot see Sam lasting long. That level of entitlement, narcissism and douchebaggery rarely takes a contestant far.

So far the contestant's life stories are pretty lame. He made a brownie out of life? Like WTF?

That plastic surgery ain't fooling me. She's gotta be the oldest contestant ever.

These people are way too happy.

Genevieve has that hot nerd thing going on. You know if she takes her glasses off and shakes her hair out that there's a babe hiding under there.

Three idols in one now? f***ing gimmicks.

Andy has some major issues.

Why did they vote that guy out? I must have missed something.

All in all, I found the premier a little weak and not up to last season's.

Yep, they love to highlight the douchebag pretty quickly out the gate. Gotta give people someone to hate.

There's no one that jumps out at me so far that I really like. I think Genevieve looked pretty good as she is, tbh lol.

As I said, I like the idol twist, it makes the players have to weigh risk vs. reward and see how far they're willing to push their luck.

Andy is clearly this season's basket case, looking forward to seeing how far he pushes it, but it's also getting a bit tiresome already.

I think the vote really had to do with him having a silver tongue and not quite fitting in with his peers.

Glad to see you're at least somewhat less negative than usual, buddy.

"Glad to see you're at least somewhat less negative than usual, buddy."

I literally laughed out loud at that. When I posted earlier I reread it and asked myself if I maybe come off as too negative at times.

But hey, I criticize some and express my admiration for others. I'm not negative. I'm realistic, at least within my own mind.

We're both right about Genevieve. I looked her up. I was actually impressed about how right I was about her. DAMN!!!

Haha less negative than usual. But that’s alright. A lot of what you say is still pretty accurate at times.

As I always say, no one hates Big Brother and survivor more than Big Brother and Survivor fans lol.

That was quite the meltdown lmao. Don't think we've quite seen a meltdown like that before. Dude couldn't even keep it together till the challenge ended. He saw his team was done and that was it for him 😂

Yep, absurd. What irritated me especially is how everything he said was in the past tense. He was already ready to throw in the towel and quit. I will never understand why people want to keep players like that. Melting down in front of everyone, including the other tribes, should be an immediate vote out.

BTW I love that what I'm pretty sure the first survivor player ever from my city is getting all the love in this thread. They've only let in Canadians recently so it's not a big sample size, but pretty sure Winnipeg has never had a player on Survivor until Genieveve this year. So that's certainly who I'm cheering for this year.

crazy that you guys are talking about these people by name. I have no idea who any of those names are lol. I don't even remember the crazy person's name, but know you are talking about him by the description.

You could tell the guy who got voted out had no clue when he said at TC that no one was strategizing the first couple days. Uhm dude, Survivor 101, if no one is strategizing with you it doesn't mean no one is strategizing, it means no one is working with you and you're at the bottom.

He made a big mistake going for 1v1s with the crazy guy early in the game. Early in the game is the time to be around the group as much as possible. That is where the dominant alliance will be formed, not in a series of 1v1 convos.

We'll see how far the crazy guy lasts. He's about as bat shit crazy as anyone ever casted. Didn't seem, like he was a tremendous challenge help either despite appearing to be somewhat strong.

This is also what I hate about the 3 tribes and why it needs to go back to 2. The "older" people generally get taken out earlier because there's no where to hide with these small tribes. That guy who got voted out wasn't even old, he was like 41 but he was old compared to everyone else in his tribe.

I looked on Wikipedia theres only 2 other older people, Sol is 43 and Sue is 59. Everyone else is 24-34.

The casting needs to get more diverse in terms of mixing people who have more normal jobs, everyone's a Podcaster, a lawyer or some other ridiculous job that barely anyone has and needs more people of different ages.

The show also needs to stop being cheap and book a different location. I'm sick of Figi, the games and the locations have looked the same for so long now that it's boring and stale.

I agree with all except the last part. I don't think its cheap that they stay in Fiji. They just happened to find the perfect place to shoot with a country that has embraced it's role as the place where reality shows come to be filmed.

The location doesn't matter these days. It's not like they focus on that and make it part of the game like they did way back when. And that's fine. Better to focus on the game.

I do agree that the 3 tribes makes it really tough for old people to make it out of the early rounds which is very unfortunate.

I would love to see way more diversity in terms of what people do. We need way less game theory nerds and way more blue collar people. Would love to see a season where they go out of their way to cast people who don't watch the show. That would be amazing if they could find 16 interesting people who don't watch the show yet still want to be on the show.

They apparently get big tax breaks and that's the main reason they stay there and I think they shoot two seasons back to back so that saves them money too...

"The producers of the American reality TV show ‘Survivor’ were today handed a $13.9 million rebate cheque by Film Fiji.

This amount was 47% of their production costs and taxes after they shot the series in the Mamanucas."

yep, that's what I'm saying. They found the perfect set up, no reason to change anything. Plus the money they save is used to improve other areas of the show or just outfit Jeff with more colored Survivor hats.

What they should do with the savings is up the prize pool. 1 million in 2000 is just above 1.8 million in 2024. So players are essentially play for roughly what 60% of the prize from season 1...

Down from 39 days to 26 though now. 1 million for 26 days of "work" is very good.

I'd rather see them put the money back into the show instead of seeing the exact same challenges in slightly different variations.

It's amazing how many losers this show finds. So tired of "nice" Jeff. That dude literally went down and quit during the challenge with his ridiculous actions. Send these morons home.

Another cast full of people with ridiculous jobs and more bs wannabe "fans of the show". Can we get some regular people mixed in?
Totally agreed. What the hell is a "Strategy Consultant"...

What bothers me about staying in the same location and seasons without “themes” is that all of these seasons run together.

In the earlier seasons I’ve watched I always remember the seasons based on where they were and/or what the theme was.

with all of these seasons being in the same location and only being numbered it makes them indistinguishable to me.

I mean, we even now have survivor players commenting on specific locations on the island when talking about seasons after they played. I think it’s absurd and cheap.

CBS/Paramount/viacom are gazillionaire media entities. Chip in a little bit of money and restore the quality of the product back. We’re lost full on family visits, had the season cut down by 1/3, and visiting the same locations for like however many seasons now. Even the rewards aren’t as good or memorable now, because they’d have to pay more to accommodate the rewards.
