89 Niners was as good as it gets

The only thing they got wrong in that Super Bowl was a missed extra point. Eight freaking touchdowns.

Montana even admitted they were "licking their chops" prior to that one. They and everyone else knew the Broncos had absolutely no chance.

Reeves coached the Broncos three more seasons after that.
I wasn't intending to shit on the Broncos there; no team in the AFC was beating the Niners that year. I was pretty young at this time but old enough to remember the trauma of the previous year's SB, which I will carry the rest of my life.

Reeves always seemed low-energy to me.

There was a pretty good stretch there where it seemed like the AFC might never win another SB, remember a lot of the talking heads referring to the NFC Championship as the real SB

It was 84 points up until 3 minutes to go. I'm still annoyed the final score is closer than what this game actually was. Make no mistake, this was Seahawks/Broncos a decade later. The Eagles only trailed for 6 minutes in their 4 playoff games. 5 and half to the Rams ans 18 seconds to Washington. All time great team, though so are all the other teams on this list.

This 2024 team dwarfs their 2017 team, 2024 will go down as their all time best so far.

It was.

While the Broncos(then Buffalo) became the butt of all jokes for getting embarrassed in the Super Bowl, the AFC wasn't exactly a great conference back then.

Oblivious is another way to put it. He was doing it Tom Landry’s way.

He really half assed it on roster building too.

I do remember Steve Atwater being a total badass from that time, that's one Broncos memory I can recall that doesnt involve Elway.

One of three first round picks that worked out in Reeves dozen years here (the other two being Dennis Smith and Chris Hinton). Atwater being suspicious as his selection came after the awful ‘88 draft when Reeves got caught not doing his homework, meeting his 1st round pick Ted Gregory being injured and way smaller than listed. He got traded in his first camp and lasted three games with the Saints. Pretty good selection of talent after TG… and the 2 nd round pick Ted Gregory has the distinction of being accused of rape and impersonating a cop.

Then next year he takes Atwater and Bobby Humphrey in the supplemental draft and it was like “see what happens when you try?”

The Broncos followed up the Super Bowl loss to the Niners with a 5-11 season. That REALLY should have been time to make a change.

Out of all those also rams, those Bills were probably the best and came wide right within doing it. However, the catharsis of the Broncos being the team to break the AFC streak on top of everything is the closest I will come to VJ-Day.

how great did it feel for broncos fans when they beat reeves to win the SB?

The man that ruined my childhood? How I hear junkies describe skag.

Reeves enhanced things that week by shooting his mouth off about portraying himself as a wronged by being fired.

Eugene Robinson getting arrested for solicitation was also a cherry on top, given how he overlooked some awful Bronco players. One example: he signed kicker Rafael Septien after the Cowboys cut him two years previous for pleading guilty to child molestation.

Didn't they beat the Bengals in the 1989 Super Bowl?
Technically it was January of 1989, so the 1988-1989 season. I quite remember getting my childhood heart ripped out on live TV when Joe Montana threw that last touchdown to John Taylor.

That SF team that played the Bengals was very good, way better than their record showed. The team the next year though was unquestionably better, arguably the best team in 49ers history. The Broncos were also not as good a team as the Bengals were the previous year.

EDIT: Holy crap, I looked it up and I forgot how absolute shit the AFC was in 1989-90. My Good God.

Yeah, I just checked, it was the following year the 49ers beat the Broncos 55-10. So that scoring run happened during the 89-90 season. A bit confusing to say 1989, when the playoffs and Super Bowl happened in 1990.

I mean, the NFL season crosses the year boundary but the bulk of it takes place in the first year. Fans will often either say the first year or the 1988-1989 sort of deal. That's pretty standard.
